The Official DisDads Rant Thread

Today's topic...Braces!!!

OK DS11 has some ortho problems. about 2 years ago he developed an extra tooth (an extra Lateral Incisor) Which caused some crowding in the front...so we had 1 tooth extracted...and a set of braces to correct the issue...problem is that he still had some "baby" teeth so wee knew this was a temporary fix.

Needless to say...we reached the Maximum on the dental for Ortho with that round...well Round 2 comes around...and as luck would have it...we are on the same insurance... so Braces Round 2 is all on us.

$4100 :headache:

So I guess what I want to rant about is...WHY do Dental plans have LIFETIME Maximums on Ortho??? I mean they get away with people like me who had no need for ortho when I was a kid...DS 16 had only 2 months of InvisAlign...but that was only like $500 (Yes the crooked teeth gene comes from my wife's side...her dad's from up north...Michigan...bunch of crooked tooth...extra toothed mutants. :rolleyes1...)

What good is dental insurance...if they don't pay for anything...Lifetime Maximum...PEANUT BUTTER!!!

Peanut Butterin Beverly!!!

Stupid Metlife...Calling the Red Baron I'm puttin' a hit out on Snoopy. :lmao:

Insurance is the devil... but unfortunately, you pretty much have to have it. I can't believe the lifetime maximum thing. I'm sure you're still paying the same premium even though they essentially are done covering one of your family members too.:headache:

DW works for an orthodontist. She doesn't like her job, but she hasn't found anything else that's any better. Truthfully, I hope she stays until our kids get to the age for braces... free ortho!!!!:thumbsup2

Nate, if you are anywhere near a dental school you may check in with them. DS had to have some work done and it worked out for us even with the 3 hour round trip drive.

uuummm...well Local College East Tennessee State University (ETSU) has a great Medical School and Phamacology School...but no dental.

Yeah insurance is a pain. When DW was going through treatment we ran into all the different things with deductables vs co-insurance payments vs. out of packet maximum. Learned very quickly that my deductable was no where close to the max I would pay. My new company gave people an option on Dental insurance. Particularly for a small company it seemed like a big scam. Didn't cover much in the way of ortho and the monthly payments Per Person worked out to being the same cost of the routine checkups.

We have Met Life, too. Dental stinks! Drives me nuts!

Plus, I can't stand Dentists. Never met one I've liked. Too close to Car Mechanics. Can't actually see the problem. Always telling you you need something fixed. Call me an Anti-Dentite, but so many are Slimeballs.

Fortunately, we found a good dentist. I have Delta Dental through work (free) and it costs $10 a check to add my children. It does not pay his whole bill, but enough that it is worth it. But, to add DW, it would cost another $100 a month. And, her teeth are better than mine. I don't get the the price setting on that, so she doesn't get dental insurance.

They have dentists in Kentucky?! :rotfl2::lmao:

We're currently in our "open season" so I decided to check out the dental benefit options, especially since I expect my daughter will need braces fairly soon. The cost/lifetime benefit ratio is absurd!! In order for orthodontia to be covered, you have to have been enrolled in the plan for 24 months. The premiums that would be paid during that 24 months is equal to over 70% of the lifetime maximum benefit!! :scared1: By the end of the 3rd year, premiums paid actually exceed maximum lifetime benefits.

Neither of my kids have ever had a cavity, and they both take good care of their teeth. We'll pass on the dental insurance and figure out a way to deal with the orthodontia costs when they come. I don't know about the dentists/orthodontists themselves, but the dental insurance business is surely a racket.

Well, not to start anything, but the health insurance companies posted record profits. Everyone has the right to make money, but ...

We have 2 options. The standard plan (cleaning, fillings) and the enhanced plan with orthodontics. I went with the standard plan for same reason.

I guess this qualifies as a rant....we're going in April. Woo hoo! Staying at Bay Lake Towers double woo-hoo! Planning a whole week. Sounds great, right? So why the rant, you say??? Sigh...the in-laws are joining us...or at least the MIL and the Aunt-in-law (??). This of course means I need to be the tour guide, as they've never been there before. It also means I am the trip-booker, airline booker, ADR setter-upper, ticket buyer, etc. And it's already starting. Airline tickets are booked (great deal from ABE to MCO on Airtran, btw)...and already have heard the "can you just deduct it from what you're going to spend on us for christmas?" I should say, "no, give me the cash." But I don't want to stir things up just yet. At least the Stepdad has begged off.
The good part about the whole trip is that it's my daughters first visit. :) Although she'll be too young to remember it (she'll be 1 1/2), we think she'll still love it!

Ok, super rant. At 4th grader renaissance faire at public school. Of the 15 performances, my child gets to be in 2. You think, that's great except that some kids have been in every performance. She gets to be in 1 dance number and 1 playing guitar. She doesn't know how to play guitar. Playing untuned guitars against music. Apparently, 6 years of dance, 3 years of Nutcracker, and student teaching aren't good enough to get her a spot in the 4 other dance routines.

Only 4 kids were given speaking parts. 20 kids were allowed to be in most acts. The rest sat on the benches.

I guess it's a good life lesson. The 1% are on top and in control, another 20% get to have all the fun, and the rest of you can sit and get the leftovers. More observations. Boys had the speaking parts and the girls had to serve food to the adults. I guess we need to reinforce that in future life.

I guess I need to write a check to the PUBLIC school to move up in caste society. At least they sang Christmas songs about Jesus. Good thing to know public education is where it is at.

Norm, sorry to see your DD get treated this way. :sad2:
