Target now sells Southwest gift cards - use RedCard for 5%?

Target now sells Southwest gift cards! They are the $50 increments. In theory, you should be able to use your RedCard to get 5% off since I believe they are classified as "entertainment" cards.

I haven't tried doing this yet. I'd be interested to know if anyone has else has purchased SW gift cards and received the 5% off when using their RedCard.

Per Southwest:

Up to four southwestgiftcards can be applied toward one reservation. Our payment system limits the total form of payments, so, if the balance of the itinerary is more than the amount of all four gift cards, you will only be able to use three of your gift cards so that the balance can be paid with another form of payment that will cover the balance of the reservation (i.e. credit card). The following is our policy in regards to forms of payment: Southwest Airlines accepts up to two unused Ticketless Travel tickets per passenger (are always applied first) and up to four of the following in any combination: southwestgiftcards, Southwest LUV Vouchers, Ticketless Travel Funds (left over funds not previously used), and one credit card.

You do get the 5% discount. I just ordered some from their website. They only had the $50 one's there but I'd do like the previous poster said and just book each ticket separately if the total was more than $200. You can also book each ticket as one way to get the price lower so that you can use more of the gift cards. The price is the same on SW whether you book a round trip or one way.

I always book each way separately. Then if the fare drops, it's easier to change that part of the flight.

Even though we use Southwest credit card points for our flights, you still have to pay for the taxes/fees (generally $2.50-$10 depending on how many layovers). I buy a Southwest gift card from Target for 5% off to pay for the taxes/fees

Some AAA branches have $10 off $100 purchases at Target if you go through a link on the AAA website to access the Target site too. Unfortunately, mine is not one of those branches. I think the southern region might be able to take advantage of that though.

Looking at all the kickback sites (ebates, mypoints, swagbucks) they all say no rebate on gift cards. Is there a trick to it?

At any rate, with FIL "circling the drain" I can definitely use whatever discount we can get when the time comes to buy those tickets... 5% is a good start! Thanks OP!

As far as eBates goes, there are some merchants that offer cash back on gift cards. I used to buy Lancôme gift cards ($50) when they did 14% back. Then, I'd take the gift card and buy $50 at Lancôme via MyPoints when they'd offer 3000 points on $50 or more. Great way to double dip!

I know that in the store, Target classifies the Disney cards as "entertainment cards" so they qualify for the 5% RedCard discount. I haven't tried ordering any online though. I'll try one of these days and see what happens. That would be a nice little bonus when those DVC MF's come due

And if you open a Upromise Mastercard you earn an additional 5% on ALL online purchases routed through Upromise. You can also purchase Disney gift cards through the Disney store for 5% off and you can even route to the Disney Cruise Line and earn 4%!

Some months ago there was a discussion on the Transportation forum and at that time it seemed (by reading the SW site and finding the info) that the normal SW price drop process could not happen if you had used a SW GC.

I hope the OP calls the SW GC people and finds out for sure if that can happen, because it was a real bummer for the person in the thread I'm thinking of (but cannot find despite my best google-fu) if they think it can happen but it cannot.

I looked through the SW GC FAQs and T&C and it's not spelled out. Says if the travel does not happen then the GC funds are kept as travel funds (not back to the GC but in travel funds), but it doesn't spell out what happens if there's a price change.

Unless something has changed recently, it is the same for a price change whether you pay by credit card or gift card. If your flight drops in price, you can rebook and the difference will then be kept as travel funds that expire a year from the date that the flight was booked. I used to travel weekly and frequently used SW gift cards that I purchased through various promotions, and I also frequently changed travel or cancelled flights all with no problems. The process was identical regardless of my payment method.

You can only use 4 payment methods per purchase on Southwest. That would be 3 GCs and a credit card for the balance or 4 GCs if they cover all of the costs. You will not be able to use all 15 $100 GCs in a single reservation.

Hmm. I might start redeeming my Perk points for Target credit and turn that around and buy Southwest cards with them.
