Do you ever hold off telling others about your love of Disney

I totally get this. Personally, I don't hold back or tolerate any grief from anyone about it. Some people do roll their eyes or criticize me, and I get the "it's for kids" business, but I won't censor myself for those people. I am proudly going to Disneyland next week to celebrate my birthday (which is actually today but trip had to be next week), and I'm going solo. Anyone who has a problem with that can take a hike.

I was very hesitant to talk about last year's trip as I was planning it -- my housemates, my hairdresser, and my parents knew (my mother went with me), but I didn't tell people at work or most of my friends where I was going until maybe a month or two in advance. Turned out I had nothing to worry about; my coworkers may not all get it but they're all chill enough to understand that it's different strokes for different folks. As for my friends? They ended up coming over to the house and joining me for Disney marathon days as I finished out my goal to watch all the theatrical Disney animated films before I went on the trip.

When I was a teenager, yes (Teens are mean... Sadly) Now? Not at all! I've made many of friends by discussing my love of Disney. If the tattoos don't give it away, I will happily discuss :)

I do find that its not just friends and family however. For instance I was booking a trip for my mum and myself to Disneyland Paris and the lady on the phone who was booking my eurostar tickets asked: How many people are going? I said myself and my mum, and she said, "Oh..."

I mean come on, i'm sure they must get lots of adults booking trips??? She made some comment about "childish trip". it was one of those moments where in the thick of it, you don't really think about it. But after i just was like.. well that was a bit rude!

What?! :scared1:

That's just plain rude and strange... I have booked all my Disney trips (DLP and WDW) myself and only over the phone. And always traveled either with my partner or by my self. And I have never ecnountered any hesitation, questioning or commenting from the CM's that I have talked to regarding me booking a Disney Vacation with no kids.

And believe me, I have been absolutely ecstatic about Character Meals, shows and such. :smickey:

:tinker:

I'm very open about it but as a 23 year old female, most people view it as me not growing up. I just ignore them and they either leave my life at some point or realise I LOVE Disney.

Just the other week I had a Disney tapestry posted to my work and I waltzed around showing everyone in the office pooh:

What is most interesting to me - is that most people who judge my love of Disney in a negative light - have never been there themselves!

But of course.

That's exactly how I experience it as well... and on top of that here in Sweden/Europe people who don't know smack still insist to call every Disney Park either just Disneyland (as In Disneyland Florida! *oh so help me!*) or for Disneyland Paris, they still call it EuroDisney! :earseek:

They ended up coming over to the house and joining me for Disney marathon days as I finished out my goal to watch all the theatrical Disney animated films before I went on the trip.

Wait...ALL of them? That's quite a marathon! Sounds like fun though. Did it include Pixar and other offshoots too?

Yes, I hold back until I find out that they are a Disney fan as well. I have a pretty successful Disney photos Instagram account and a little blog that most of my friends and family don't know about. I'm not embarrassed at all about being a fan, but I don't understand some of the negative reactions, nor do I want to deal with them.

Thankfully I have my IG followers and Disboards to share the love with!

At first I was a little more secretive as we take the kids twice a year and the hubs and I do a solo weekend once a year... so we go a ton! Now I really don't care- and It's funny- the less I care about what people think- the less negative reactions I get.

I will say I think our love for Disney has helped my husband at work. He works with engineers and fellow accountants in a very large company and, come to find out, a ton of fellow Disney nuts! He literally had a very high ranking manager end all emails with "Have a Magical Day" after they spoke of their shared love. He has always been a hard worker but I think it gives him an extra edge with some.

I do hold back with some people I know. It has started more recently, so for our trip next month I am just saying we are going to FL. I get tired of explaining that I can't pinpoint what I love so much about WDW. Ultimately, it just makes me feel like a kid again and I don't have the stress and worries of being an adult. We have kids with us and an itinerary to keep, but it just doesn't feel like the real world. It is a place where people are happy (at least those around me!) and I don't have to make the car payment, dinner, help with homework or fight at bedtime. It just really is my happy place.

I too feel like those that hate it are the ones that have never been or went once during the peak time. These are also the same people that own a camper, but park it in one spot and fight traffic every Friday and Sunday to "go to the lake" every weekend. To me, that is no fun, but I don't knock their thing!

I rarely say where I'm going unless someone asks. I got twice a year, at least one of those times is solo and the other is with my 35 year old son who has been going since before he was 3. Most people at work will assume if I'm going on vacation that I'm going to WDW, which is not always the case. The good thing about getting older is you learn to just not care what other people think or say. If asked why I go I'll explain it's an easy place for a woman to go solo to, it costs less than most of my go to places since I have an AP and can spread out the ticket cost. I also tend to go during F&G so it's easy to explain the pretty flowers and food booths and F&W and all I have to say is DUH Food and Wine who doesn't like food and wine? It also helps that I'm not known for not sharing my personal life and I'm a bit of a female dog when questioned about it.

Wish I could do 5 "likes" to this one:)

My disney obsession started about 5 years ago and if it came up in conversation I'd happily talk to others about why I love Disney parks and Disney in general. Some people didn't really get it but could appreciate my love for it anyway.
However some others not only didn't get it, but would actually try and make me feel bad about liking it. "But you don't have children", "It's for children, are you sure you wouldn't rather xyz". Or "what a waste of money ". It's normally friends of friends but even some family members.
Now I'm very selective what I discuss to whom. Does anyone else do this?

What I tell people is:
Whoever pays the piper calls the music. :rockband: :charac2: :mic: :music:
If your family/friends/friend of a friend wants you to go on a vacation and they are willing to pay for it, go and have a great time on them. If you are paying for the trip you go where and when you choose to go.

Yup, I try not to tell people anymore because I always get the " not Disney again" speech. I am pretty fed up. My family just doesn't get it. My brother-in-law is the biggest critic and goes off on a rant every time we see him.:sad2:
Now I just tell people that the kids love going back year after year but really, it my husband and I who love the place. My husband and I just planned our next trip in Sept. for our wedding anniversary. No kids this time. People keep asking me where we are going, I just keep telling them we have no concrete plans and that we will plan as we go, which is a load of bull. We are going back to Disney for an adult only trip. Only my Mom and parents-in-law know. It kind of sucks but I am fed up of explaining why we like the place so much!

Yup, all of them! Well, nearly all. It's actually kind of hard to nail down what movies should be included in that goal (and it's not always fun). The criteria were:
  • At least partially animated
  • Theatrically released
  • Disney or Pixar
I included DisneyToon Studios films (which I regret; there are some real stinkers), but excluded the Disney Television Animation movies (Doug, etc.), as well as Valiant (it was actually made by Vanguard Animation), and the Studio Ghibli films (I love them but my plate was full). I also skipped Song of the South because it's not legally available. I started about nine months before the trip, at which time I would have been on schedule if I'd watched three per week...so of course I procrastinated and had a couple weeks at the end where I was watching one every night, and running five film marathons on Saturdays.

In some ways the selection was arbitrary, because I did pick one big subsidiary (Pixar) and let the others fall by the wayside...but I actually like Pixar movies, so there's that to consider.

I totally understand. It's a shame your brother in law feels the need to rant about it.

My family is pretty relaxed with it, it's mostly friends and colleagues I get the flack from.

Sounds awesome! Nine months is a more reasonable time frame as I was picturing a marathon as nonstop (like when I do a Star Wars marathon).

Which DisneyToon's were disappointing? I am trying to think of which ones they did that were not based on TV shows and also released in theaters. They did Duck Tales and A Goofy Movie, which are both very good. It always seemed to me that DisneyToon could do well with a theatrical level budget, but not so good with direct-to-video money.
