Toll roads

We are renting from Budget at MCO and are staying at Bonnet Creek. We will be visiting the 4 parks at WDW and Legoland only. Do we need to rent any toll transponder?

I just bought a SunPass so I didn't have to deal with the rental car charges.

Hi, we are renting a car also while at Disney, through Dollar booked via Southwest Air. We will have it for a week while there before returning it to MCO. What additional rental car charges are there one might have (need for Sunpass), and could you elaborate on the benefit of the Sunpass for a rental? Thanks.

You can purchase a sun pass (get the one that can move from car to car) and then you don't have to worry about paying the tolls with cash. If you do it through the rental agency I believe they typically charge a convinence fee plus the toll charge and the fee is per day whether you use the service or not (again will vary by rental company, check your rental agreement for details) I got one 2 years ago and have found it useful plus if I drive down (which I do on occasion) I can use it for my own car...

Oh, you get the passes at the local grocery stores if I remember correctly. So if you want to pick up food or drinks you can combine it into one stop.

I would recommend just taking a bunch of quarters and a few dollar bills. That should handle the automated and manned toll booths.

That's what we do when we go to WDW. Typically, the only time we pay for tolls is when we are arriving and then departing.

We spent around $10 in tolls during our visit :crazy2: Next time I will tell "Waze" to avoid toll roads. We also only had to use tollroads upon arriving in departing. Not on the day to day driving.

This is also a good option, but I have EZ pass up here so I got use to not stopping and then forgot once... ya that was a little more then I like. Plus I always forget the cash! But that's just me.

they are working on sun pass / ez pass compatibility but that has been going on a few years and still seems to not be ready yet... ugh it would be nice to not need different transponders for different states!

I'll look into it if I can what toll roads we may encounter. We are also going out to Kennedy.

There are a few toll roads in Florida that don't take cash.

Go to 7-11 and buy the 5.95 portable transponder. Go online and sign it up and add $10. You will be good to go.

If you mess up on a toll, you can fix it online if you get an automated ticket.

Where are they? I'm not arguing, just asking for future reference.

We don't travel around Orlando after we get to WDW, so our experience with tolls is on the way in and the way out of Orlando. We have experienced a toll bridge and toll road north of Destin, but they either have a manned cash booth or a setup where they take a picture of your tag and send you a bill in the mail.

We hit several cashless toll booths last week toward the Miami area and one near the Gulf Coast. They take a photo of the license and pass it onto the rental car company. So we got hit with an additional $21 in tolls on top of the many cash tolls we paid.

I've never seen so many tolls in my life! Between Tampa and Port Canaveral, we went through 9 tolls one way!

I think all the tolls between Orlando and Port Canaveral had a cash booth (and gave us a receipt).

If you do not have a Florida toll transponder and do not sign up for the rental company's toll program then it is a good idea to get in line at the manual cash lane and get a receipt whenever possible.

There is a section of expressway in Tampa with cashless tolls. Florida's Turnpike is gradually converting to cashless tolls with the portion near Miami already converted.

FWIW, I found this on line.

"Areas that don’t accept cash: The Miami section of the Turnpike and the following locations don’t accept cash: Mid Bay Connector (Destin); Veterans Expressway (Tampa); Selman Expressway (Tampa); and Sawgrass Expressway (Ft. Lauderdale). Hollywood Boulevard (Exit 49) and Griffin Road (Exit 53) in Broward County are also now all electronic. So you need to use SunPass or Toll-By-Plate. (See above for details.)"

Will we encounter cashless tolls going from mco to cocoa beach then cocoa beach to WDW?

I see you answered your own question! Thanks.

If memory serves me correctly, there are a couple eastbound tolls from MCO on FL-528, which heads you out towards Kennedy Space Center/Port Canaveral/Cocoa Beach. They were two $1 tolls that are manned.

On the return, if you travel west from the points mentioned above on FL-528, then take FL-417 (Greeneway) to WDW you'll hit those two $1 tolls, then two $1.50 tolls beyond MCO. Those are also both manned. That assumes you get off 417 at exit 6.

Silly question but are the tolls around the Orlando area exact change or are the attendants able to make change for you? Are they true cash or do some take credit cards? *Haven't been to Orlando since September 2011*

I know we'll likely be using either Avis or Alamo from MCO to All-Stars and then only to WDW parks and Universal parks with a Walmart stop too. So am I correct that the tolls we'll be using are ones that take cash within the area we'll be in?

Yes, these take cash and you have different lanes to go through such as 'Sunpass' with transponder or exact change or the 'make change lanes'.

And that list is bound to grow. More and more states are eliminating the toll booths and going to all electronic tolling.
