Common advice ignored

I heard a tip a couple of years ago-always wear flip flops or slippers in the hotel room. Never let your bare feet touch the carpet because it's gross. Do people actually do this? I admit to being a barefooter in the room and sometimes when I'm walking to the pool or to get ice from the machine.

The advice that you must wear good sneakers in the parks. I think I'd probably die of heat stroke if I wore socks and sneakers in the FL heat. Sandals or flip flops all the way.

I gave the dollar store ponchos a try once, but they really are cheap crap that tears very easily. The Disney ones last. We reused them quite a few times.

The free water I've tried a couple times, but the taste isn't so great. I love that when they offer ice water at the resorts and sometimes outside the restaurants they put lemon in it. Much better. Maybe that will be my new tip. Travel with sliced lemon so you can drink the free water.

I've never suggested it, but it totally skeeves me out to walk barefoot on hotel carpet. I just keep my sandals on in the room most of the time.

People don't use Dollar Store ponchos because they last. They use them because they are small and easy to carry (especially if you are carrying enough for an entire family) and mostly because they can wad them up and throw them away when the rain is over.

I totally agree with OP on the ponchos. My family went to Sea World Ohio back when it was open twenty years ago and my husband and I used those ponchos until last year. This time I bought a wizarding world of Harry Potter one at universal and hubs got one at trex after eating there once. The ones at the parks are more expensive but tend to be nicer I think. Plus I like wearing "cute" themed ponchos when we go.

I'm a bare footer too! I know the carpet is dirty but I don't care. I look at it this way--my skin is a semi permeable membrane. Nothing nasty is getting through that membrane that will hurt me. No one died from a bit of dirt!

I agree with you on the ponchos. We were there during a tropical depression and it was the most rain for 7 days straight I have ever seen. Several of our ponchos tore from wear, we had to take them off and and so much. Disney replaced them for free! Then we used them at home. Great for sitting out at sporting events or going trick or treating in the rain.

Also agree on the water. We also don't split food or take busses. We are on vacation, not an episode of Survivor.

My family had our first trip to DW two years ago at the end of February. On our last day we went to Animal Kingdom. There was a light, misting rain all morning, but we didn't care. Around noon though, the rain came down in buckets and stayed steady for at least four hours, then went back to a light rain. We had rain jackets, so we were good (we thought). Since that was our first and only trip, so far, I'm surprised to read all these posts that talk about rain that doesn't last very long. I just assumed that what we experienced was not that uncommon. It felt like we had the park to ourselves, so we loved it. We rode Expedition Everest four times in a row with zero wait time between rides (I had to stop because I was getting a headache!). I share all that because we are heading back in four weeks and will take rain ponchos this time. The jackets were great, except for the fact that the kids had little backpacks that got soaked. I noticed that the "smart people" all had ponchos that covered their bags. I can easily get some ponchos at WalMart for a reasonable price, but would love to get the Disney ones. Can those only be purchased at the parks? I can't find them on-line anywhere.

Depends on the time of year but typically the rain in Florida is an afternoon thunderstorm you can set your watch to...

Disney will replace them if they are ripped- this happened to me at the last halloween party and it was coming down in buckets- and I did not realized I packed my daughter's- youth poncho and and it was completely destroyed. The manager in the emporium came up to me before I even dared to ask and handed me a new one.. last feb- this happened to my husband's poncho at AK and they replaced it.

I'm a certified Germaphobe, and I walk around hotels with no shoes on. I don't make my kids either. If they were babies and put their feet in their mouth constantly, maybe, but not now. Too much trouble. I love hotels. :)

I bought Disney ponchos on Amazon, so I didn't feel bad. They weren't dollar store, but they weren't trash bags. Saved us a ton walking through DS in a downpour.

Last year when there were 11 of us going I bought 50 poncho's for $45 on Amazon. They are thinner than a deck of cards and very light weight. I use them for wet rides and short showers. I've found that splash in particular has a much shorter line in the AM because no one wants to walk around all day wet. Use a poncho and your fine.

If the weather is calling for significant rain I will wear or pack a rain jacket.

When we were kids our parents took us on our first Disney trip. My mom said " it rains in Florida every day at 2pm for 10 minutes". And it did. I couldn't figure out how she knew. Since then, I've been down about 10 times and had perfect weather. I mean, no rain at all, except for that one trip in June when my dsis came down three days after me. Three days of 30C sunny weather, dsis shows up and typhoon like rain for three days! My sister has had almost no trips to Disney without constant rain. I can't wear a wet poncho, yikes. I don't mind getting " ride wet".
Regarding the free water, I only drink beer, and I have yet to find a cart that will give me one for free. If I get thirsty in the parks I drink OUT OF THE FOUNTAIN. I know, it even sounds gross to me, but I've never caught anything. Maybe it's all that beer.

I never use a poncho or umbrella myself. I usually go in early September or late August and the rain usually brings about a sense of relief from the heat & humidity. You'll dry off in seconds anyway. I always wear a bathing suit to any theme park under my clothes.

Funny about the water thing... I always wear cargo shorts so I have plenty of pockets. I bring a collapsible cup and a small bottle of water flavor enhancer. I can get water from a fountain or a bathroom sink, add some flavor and I've got something to drink. Then the cup folds and goes back in my pocket.

The suggestion about comfortable shoes (sneakers) and socks doesn't work for me. I would still get blisters. If I wear socks in the park, it's double layer running socks. They're very light weight and because the layers of sock rub against each other, and not sock against skin, I am blister free. If I don't want to wear socks, I wear Sketcher's GoWalks. They're AWESOME shoes and I never get blisters. (Plus, I moisturize my feet every night after a day in the parks.)

Hubby and I camped at Fort Wilderness January 2016 and the day we had planned to go to MK it was raining pretty good. We were happy - we came from Minnesota where it was 20* and snowing! We had brought both an umbrella and ponchos and never even got the ponchos out! Umbrella was much more handy. And we LOVED MK in the rain! The wait times, at least until about noon or 1pm, were pretty much nil. We rode many rides repeatedly without getting off!!! Sure, a few stage shows were cancelled, but getting to ride Thunder Mountain and Splash Mountain two times in a row without getting off was a GREAT trade off!!

... If I could find clothes that fit me with enough pockets, I would never be in a bag check line again.

I call these my Disney shorts: LL Bean Comfort Trail Shorts. (I have several pairs.) They have 3 zippered pockets (and 2 more open ones, in front). The 2 in the back fit a cell phone with zipper closed (fits either way, but I put it horizontal to sit on rides). The front zippered pocket fits many credit cards/ID/AP card/$20 bill/etc - even in a ziploc. I can fit one of those crappy dollar store type (come folded up tiny) rain ponches in the other back pocket. They make them in long pants too.

I LOVE being bagless at the parks.

That's why I wear cargo shorts and put a couple of ziplocs in the pockets for wet rides. My shorts may bulge in odd places, but no bag lines for me :)
