Heigh Ho, Heigh Ho, It's off to run we go! A new and improved Teetz running Journal

Foodie Update!

Day 7, another light day...

I just wasn't very hungry today but I did get one of my favorite items.

Spaghetti and Meatball Mozzarella sticks!

In other foodie news...

So every year we have what we call the Sporkies at our state fair. Basically a contest for the best new food at the fair. The 2017 winner was the Spaghetti Mozz sticks. The 2018 winner was the Deep Fried Lasagna I had on day 1. I thought I had other new foods that were better so I was disappointed in that. The same restaurant won the 2017 and 2018 awards.

The fair food reports are too funny! I haven't gone in years, but decided to be a good sport when my husband and 2/3 of my kids wanted to go on Sunday. My list is pretty sad:

1. baked potato
2. a few bites of @mateojr's ice cream (pouting because he chose the chocolate topping instead of fresh strawberry.)

Oh man! I can't imagine not going to the fair. The baked potato is a great fair item though!

We have fairs around here but they are typically in September once it has cooled down. I really need to get back there some day, maybe once we have kids. I am lame and my favorite fair food is Fried Dough although the options were not as extensive when I was a kid as they are now.

All the fair food talk is making me sad. We have been to one fair since we moved to FL and the food sucked. You would think that it being in south Florida would have brought in some yummy Latin food. Nope. Nothing but French fries, burgers, hot dogs and funnel cakes. We used to go to a huge fair called The Big E when we lived in MA that was food heaven. DH and I would eat and eat and eat. We are hoping to check out the Central FL fair. We missed it last year due to soccer.

That sucks. I guess when I think of Florida I don’t really think of fairs much so maybe they just aren’t big there? I hope you get to that Central FL fair though!

When you get outside Orlando it gets real country real fast. Lots of cows, camo and pickup trucks. We are at soccer practice right now and 75% of the vehicles are pick up trucks (ours included!).

This is very true. Lots of cows and country between our place near Cocoa Beach and Orlando.

The Big E ads just started this week. I hear it gets bigger every year. I have actually never been as we also seems to never find time to make it there. One of these years I will go for the food.

I go to our county fair every year since I was a kid. I used to be in 4-H. This year I was bummed I didn't get to go but it was for a good reason. We left a day earlier for our Disney Cruise. I always get a sausage sandwich with green pepper and onions, fries and a milkshake made by the Jr. 4-H leaders.

I just looked up the Arizona State Fair, which I used to go to all the time as a kid, and it's coming up in October!! Maybe I will have to make a trip!

I have always wanted to go to another states fair to see how it compares. We had a record breaking fair this year with well over 1 million visitors.

Random fun fact relating to Disneyland and the California state fair.

From park opening until the major refurbishment moved the gates of California Adventure, there were giant capital letters that spelled out C A L I F O R N I A in front of the DCA entrance. In October, the letters would get a candy corn color overlay, the holidays would see a candy cane stripe overlay with Mickey and Goofy figures on a couple of the letters, and then they had special colors when World of Color opened in 2010. Moving the entrance gates up meant the letters had to go, and so off they went to the California State Fair.

Interesting I always wondered what happened to the letters.

Okay, I had to google these. So it looks like they went up in 2001. I feel like my first trip to Disneyland was in late 1999 or early 2000. BUT THEN I WENT BACK. I went back for my senior trip and did Grad Night in 2003 and I can't even ever remember seeing these and that makes me SO SAD. I have the worst memory ever.

Note to self: Visit the California State Fair at some point.
I loved those letters. I miss them.

While I liked the letters and wished they could have found a way to keep them, I also think the trade off was most definitely worth it.

Well, in your defense, California Adventure was quite forgettable for a few years after it opened. Before the recent wave of quality new attractions such as Midway Mania, Carsland, and World of Color, you could spend 2-3 hours in California Adventure and be done with the park.

Famous statements about the park as it existed before the Buena Vista Street and Carsland changes:

"If it's good enough for Six Flags, it's good enough for Disney." Micheal Eisner

"I liked it (meaning California Adventure) better as a parking lot." John Hench (who helped design Disneyland and the Magic Kingdom. For those who don't know, California Adventure stands where the Disneyland parking lot used to be).

I know it's popular right now to lament about how little Animal Kingdom and/or Disney's Hollywood Studios currently have to offer, but they are currently not close to how little California Adventure had to offer before the massive refurbishment it went through.
