Hi Everyone! I pop in and out of here, but just can't keep up. I can't believe you're almost at 150 pages. I think the last time I stopped in, the new thread just started. It looks great and I really appreciate everyone's open advice and knowledge sharing! Just want to also say, I used a DISer's link to apply for the Rose Gold on 1/4 (and was instantly approved) so hopefully someone gets a surprise referral bonus soon.
I do have a couple of questions:
1. Is it too soon to apply for SPG Personal in Feb? I have a little FOMO since I've never had a Marriott card and it's going away. I'm locked out of any chase cards (7/24). Originally (and still) plan on getting the SPG Lux later this year as I could really use the credit and 50k free night. So I'm not sure if getting the personal now would decrease my chances at the Lux?
2. Does anyone know if the Chase Freedom can be upgraded to the CSR? Since I'm locked out from applying, I don't mind not getting the bonus but hoping I could upgrade to use the higher redemption rate and travel credits.
TIA!
1. The SPG Personal is a credit card, so the number you're looking at is 2/90 (2 Amex
credit cards opened in the last 90 days). Amex will not approve another credit card if you've already opened 2 credit cards in the last 90 days. The Rose Gold card is a
charge card and therefore doesn't count against the 2/90 rule.
Since you have the Rose Gold card, go to Amex's Refer a Friend website to generate a referral link, paste it into an incognito window, and see if you can find the SPG Personal card to refer yourself. I tried looking for the SPG Personal referral this weekend but couldn't find it, so I'm not sure if Amex has removed the ability to generate new referral links for the SPG Personal ahead of its discontinuation after 2/12/19. If you cannot self-refer from one of your cards, please consider applying through a DISchurner link (which are still working).
Getting the SPG Personal now will not preclude you from getting the SPG Lux (Bonvoy Brilliant) later this year. However, getting one of the Chase Marriott cards will disqualify you (refer to
Navigating Marriott’s Byzantine Credit Card Rules).
Although you are 7/24, it appears you could still get the Marriott Biz (because it appears not to be subject to 5/24, as discussed on
DoC and in this thread in some detail over the weekend). Getting the Marriott Biz now, may not preclude you from getting the bonus on the SPG Personal. See my post on that
here. However, getting the Marriott Biz would preclude you from getting a bonus on the SPG Lux later this year. See
Navigating Marriott’s Byzantine Credit Card Rules.
If you value the SPG Lux's 50k Free Night certificate, don't apply for the Marriott Biz. But note that the 50k FN cert will post 6-8 weeks after your first cardmember anniversary, which means you'll have to pay the SPG Lux's second year annual fee in order to keep the card open to earn the FN. But there are
options to minimize your cost to get that FN cert.
@Albort mentioned this earlier, but be careful with Amex. If you're planning to keep opening Amex cards for their bonuses, you need to keep Amex happy by putting continued spend on the cards you already have. If Amex sees a drop-off in your spend after you've met MSR and received a bonus, they'll assume you're a gamer who is only opening their cards for the bonus and may flag your account with a pop up that appears on future applications and denies you a bonus on any new cards based on your "history." While the SPG Personal's MSR is only $3k in 3 months, it might be best to spread out your spend so that your monthly statements are more even, rather than paying one or two big expenses and hitting the MSR fast, then sock drawing the card. And keep putting spend on your Amex cards. I'd hate for you to get the pop up when you're ready to apply for the SPG Lux.
Note that the SPG Lux will have an elevated bonus of 100k Marriott points after $5k MSR/3 months from 2/13/19 to 4/24/19.
2. Yes.
