The Running Thread - 2019

What a crazy couple of days! When I last reported in, we were driving from NC to OH to meet a puppy DW had met online and was on the verge of falling in love with through pictures and videos from the breeder. We got to their house around 4:00 and met the puppy and her brother.

The puppy immediately charged into DW’s arms and got right up into her face. It was over. I thought the brother was a really nice dog, but didn’t give it too much thought as he was already spoken for. DW was thrilled as we went to dinner and the hotel for the evening. I made the mistake of admitting that I was still down, as her puppy was a square peg to the round hole in my heart.

DW started texting the breeder about the boy unbeknownst to me and was told that he might, in fact, be available. We picked up DWs puppy the next morning and headed home. About 45 minutes down the road, the breeder texted and asked if we could wait until noon to hear whether the boy’s owner would back out, and that she had decided that another puppy she had held out of the litter for show might be better as a pet. So we turned around and headed back to her house.

When we got there, the girl turned out to be a beautiful red brindle girl. We went into the yard with her, DWs pup and the brother and she immediately came over and crawled up into my lap. She would run off to play, then come back to me for attention. The boy just wanted to be the boss of his sisters. The last of my defenses crumbled and we headed home with two girls. I’ve never had a dog of my own. I’ve always been a cat person and accessory to dog person DW. I guess things change.

We had to go back to the store to get another carrier and supplies for puppy #2 just to get her home. It was a late night getting back last night and it’s been a nutso day today. It’s a huge transition from a single dog household to a two puppy household. All. The. Energy. I’m still not sure what we’ve gotten ourselves into, but I think it’s going to be fun! Owen is far from forgotten and is still a big presence missing in our lives, but it’s a step forward.

TL;DR: Went to Ohio to get a puppy, came home with two. Oh, crap, what have we done!

Is anyone else having trouble with pics refusing to upload in portrait orientation? I’d love to get that to stop happening!!!

BEST DAY EVER!!! Bella pup says hi to your pups!

QOTD: Do you find this thread informative and helpful with regards to running topics? Do you come here for the QOTD and answers or for other reasons? Do you think the thread needs more content or could we use fewer QOTD's?

I am having a hard time keeping up lately for various different reasons. I am debating if keeping the thread going is doing good for anyone or if I added less content would people still check in and reply?

I do find it helpful, and I also refer back to older posts (although I find the search function non-intuitive and less helpful than I would like). The QOTDs are a source of entertainment as well as a new way of thinking of things- running or not.
Everyone is busy. Everyone's life changes. I would like the thread to continue, but think if it is not helpful to you, LSUlakes, it does not have to. The format could also change if it would be more interesting or useful to you.

I was just updating the race list and accidentally clicked something wrong and I lost everything I've updated and I had already deleted my list of past and upcoming races to update :( If yall could so kindly, re post your results and upcoming races I will add them to the OP when I get a second chance.

Thanks!

I learn a lot from QOTDs. Not all of them, sure, but some of them are useful.

I've learned quite a bit from the people here, and also gotten a lot of inspiration to keep going.

I enjoy the QOTD, but if it is a source of stress for you, then I can easily forgo it and the race results list. You are doing a free service inside of a free service, so I am not expecting of anything out of you.

I’ll answer other people’s QOTDs, too, no problem.

A: as a “newbie” to running I appreciate reading about everyone’s experiences, and some of the questions are things I didn’t even know were something I should consider thinking about (socks matter?!). I don’t mind the fun posts either, and I think it’s fun to have a balance of the two

But that said I completely understand that it’s a huge thread for one person to try and manage. I would definitely be open to more directed content and if that’s the direction this thread goes I will still follow along for sure :)

What an exciting turn of events @camaker !
Have you named them yet?

The white puppy is Bella. She started as Belle, but it quickly became apparent that Bella felt more natural. DWs favorite movie is Beauty and the Beast.

The brindle is Sydney. We also like Bristol as a good English name, so as big Alias fans we went with Sydney Bristol. She’ll just be called Sydney, though.

I enjoy the QOTDs. It’s very interesting to see all the different perspectives and approaches in this diverse group. I can see how it would be hard to keep coming up with new questions, though. There are enough of us, though, that I think we could do more crowdsourcing of QOTDs to take some of the load off. A good QOTD might be “What would be some good QOTDs that you would like to see answered?” Then just put them all in a file somewhere to trot out when needed.

ATTQOTD: I've only answered a few in the few short weeks I've been following the runDisney forum, but I've enjoyed reading and participating. Everyone was very helpful when I was looking for reading resources as well, so I think it's worth keeping the thread going. I do agree that there's certainly no pressure for a QOTD to be a requirement.

For the race list, having a Google Form that feeds in to a spreadsheet might be a more efficient way -- that way maybe a couple of people could moderate the thread and have access to the spreadsheet so there's not a chance of people accidentally deleting/modifying previous entries.

ETA: @camaker those new pups are adorable! good luck with tackling two!

ATTQOTD: I enjoy the running QOTDs and find them both fun and informative. I also enjoy the ones not related to running. I can see that it could be a burden for you to always be asking them, so it seems like it would be possible to set up a volunteer rotation if you want.

I feel like it is useful to have a QOTD to spark some conversation...it seems like when there isn't one, things slow down quite a bit. Perhaps if no QOTD became the norm, then other conversation would pick up. Dunno.

I enjoy the QOTD posts and all of the other assorted chat and discussion too. If you need help keeping up with maintaining the thread, there are plenty of us who are willing to step in and help out.

I enjoy this thread and would definitely try to keep up with it, even without the QOTD. I can understand that it takes a lot of work to keep those going. I like the earlier idea of maybe migrating the race list to a Google Doc or something so that people can just add their information themselves.

Another idea is maybe it can be changed to Question of the Week. A lot of people seem like they can't get to the thread every day anyway. This way people can chime in and answer the question any time during the week and of course, the various related and unrelated chatter can continue as well.

I do find the thread helpful. I don’t think a daily question is necessary all the time but it’s a great place for people to ask and discuss running in general.

ATTQOD: I really enjoy this thread. I get super behind when I'm busy at work but enjoy an evening of catching up. Like others, I definitely understand that it would be a ton of work to keep up with. I'd be happy to be part of a rotation or go to a QOTW. We appreciate your hard work!

I do have a question of my own. I'm the (really really really) happy new owner of a Garmin 245. How can I get the most out of it? What running metrics should I pay attention to? I had a refurbed 220 previously so I'm used to having basic gps but nothing fancy. Already love having a step counter (used to run in Fitbit + 220 which just looked kinda goofy). I like having HR info but I'm not sure how to use it optimally.

About to sign up for a 4th of July 5K with watermelon. Yay for spontaneity. Have a tentative plan for a half around Halloween and hopefully the Disney full again in January, all pending work stuff. Have also started to be intrigued by trail races... who knows what will come of that.
