Disney Skyliner (Gondola Transportation System) Read Post 1 Now Open!

I haven’t heard of a media event for the Skyliner. That’s sort of strange that they would have one for just the Skyliner.

I haven't heard anything about one either .... though it could makes sense - given the interest in but also some of the concerns about this mode of transportation, I could see getting a but of the bloggers and stuff to ride and then post a bunch of positive stories about it could get people excited but also provide evidence against those that have concerns, etc.

I see this as a really big deal tbh; biggest debut thing since AK opened sort of since Disney springs was such a lengthy and piecemeal Reno and overhaul (aka 3 year garage builds).

yes they really need this to be successful with all the other headwinds they are dealing with on both coasts this season.

I wouldn't be surprised if Disney markets the Skyliner as an experience as well as transportation. It has already been featured on local newscasts, at D23, and the blog.

I'm expecting more of a news push, and maybe even a billboard on I-4.

To each their own but there is no way the Skyliner compares to the opening of a brand new park.

A media event for this to me would just be weird. Take some pictures of a cabin, ride to a park and you’re done. Media events usually showcase lots of new things from the new attraction, to food, to merchandise and much more. Just seems odd to me.

Well of course. They use the monorail as that. I just don’t see the need for a major media event unless they pair it with something else like a sneak peak at Riviera or whatever else.

that is fair that it is possibly a bit of an overstatement but i think internally its possible that they think its that huge; lol but you're right we don't know.

I think you're reading too much into the term "media event". This year's first MNSSHP had a "media event", with bloggers invited and Disney PR cm's showing off displays of special food items and merchandise.

Maybe "event" is the wrong term ... but I could see a "media preview" to let all the bloggers ride it a day early and get their postings out there and build some positive hype

And that happens every year to sell the event.

Sure there is merch for the Skyliner but the goal of the Skyliner is to sell rooms at the resorts it’s connected too. So that’s why I would imagine if there is a media event they would connect it to a sneak peak at Riviera, and stuff like that. To drive DVC and rooms.

We're descending into semantics, but Disney uses "event" to apply to just about anything:
  • Mickey's parties are hard-ticket events
  • Early Morning Magic is an after-hours event
  • Leased corporate events, like private dinners with Illuminations viewing
  • The cast preview of Skyliner was a Cast Event
I think anytime they invite a few media types who are greeted or escorted by PR types, it's officially a "media event."

For those wondering about storm protocol:

We were at WDW last week and saw the cast previews going on. A storm rolled through and they kept the line running. It wasn't until there was lightning in the area that they cleared the line and stopped running the gondolas. I overheard a cast member telling other CM's that there was lightning within 3 miles and they would be shut down until 15 minutes after the latest strike.

So, it seems to be a similar protocol to what they use with the outdoor rides.

Gotta remember people pay $20-40/ea to do one round trip in a lot of Tourist locations. In the last year I've paid $25 pp to ride on three different systems. This is not showing off a new bus, this is the equivalent of opening the first monorail or at least the Epcot monrail.

Just to be clear, He "Spokesmayne" announced at his first "Media Event" on Saturday at Epcot that this "event" would take place within a few days not a day or 2 before opening, could be as soon as today or tomorrow...but as I said before ...we'll see.

It will be funny if the big complaint ends up being that it will be too cold at night, "shut the vents!"

I think it will be. Since it was only "warm" fully clothed this time of year.

I guarantee they will need to be shut often in the winter. It was 29 degrees one night we were there.

They run at ski resorts all the time why would they shut down?

I think it makes sense to have a press preview for this opening, because as a transit system it has implications way beyond Disney. There are quite a few municipal governments watching this very closely to see how it is received.

Having a for-profit company pay to be the guinea pig for how well a ropeway works as mass transit in the southern US is a great piece of luck for urban planners. No taxpayer money spent before we see how it feels to ride. However, as with all mass-transit systems, the sociological factors are harder to gauge. There is still the possibility that a ropeway installed as urban mass transit could suffer the same fate as the one built in Rio de Janeiro. Some communities will embrace them and effectively police them (see Medellin and LaPaz), and some will not, and it is up to their local leaders to accurately predict /manage that aspect.

So fun to watch these running, they really come out of the gate with some speed. Cast member previews look smooth
