The Running Thread - 2020

Fun Friday QOTD: I just recalled that I am registered for the Louisiana Marathon on 1/19/2020 and theres no chance in me running it. For fun I wanted to know what the cut off time for the race is and come to find out it's a 16 min pace or 7 hours, just like Disney. So for the question, do you think it is possible to walk 26.2 miles below 16 min pace without training?
While deferment seems like the wise choice, if it were not possible and it were me, I would go and see what I could do before being swept.

Not to actually answering: yes-ish.
reason for answer: before I started running at lunch, I could walk with coworkers. Depending on who I was with we would range 18-20 min/mile while chatting. over 2 miles. If I went in planning to walk the whole thing, AND assuming I would keep the 18m/m pace I would be 52.4 minutes behind the pace of being swept. So the question is, could I run some of the miles to make up that time?
Could I run 9ish miles at my slow pace of a 12 minute mile and walk the other 17 at a brisk walking pace? I probably could do it and finish. I would probably swear a lot and maybe cry during and after the experience.

That sounds like the absolute LEAST amount of fun imaginable. I admire the back of the pack so much because they do the work for so much longer than the rest of us. Without training, I doubt it would be possible. Even walking a 16 min pace you kind of have to be fast.

ATTQOTD: I would like to start of by saying it is highly unlikely that I would attempt this and after I answer I am going to see about deferring to the next event. I also think it is possible but it would suck way more than running the thing trained. I also do not think I could actually do it.

I’d just eat the race fee. Walking the 26.2 means a lot of extra time on your not trained body and feet. Sounds like torture I would give to my worst enemy :)

ATTQOTD: I feel like I can answer this one based on real life experience. During the recovery from my ankle and hip issues I was relegated to a lot of walking. Not race walking but standard walking. With a bit of time I was walking 13:45 minute miles when really putting forth effort and I could sustain 14 mm for hours. In the beginning I was on the 18-20 minute range but that was more about the injury than ability. I am sure you Could knock out 16mm; it would hurt but I bet you could stay ahead of required pace. If you mix in some running I think it is very possible.

Attqotd: if you were a server or cook or nurse or any other physical on your feet jobs, it would suck. For desk jobs, well, at least you’ld get to stare into the void for a spell.

Anyone out there ever done a Disney race while staying at Fort Wilderness? I ask because my wife and I will be having our honeymoon there. It just hit me that the Star Wars race will be happening while I am there. I said I wouldn't do a Disney race for a while because the total cost has gotten too expensive but since I am already there I am leaning toward doing it. I just don't know how much of a nightmare it is from Fort Wilderness given how huge the place is and how many bus transfers are needed. I'll have my car so I guess I could just drive but the roads are bound to be closed. Any feedback?

Yes many times. It is fine but my suggestion is drive your car to the front of ft wilderness and then get on the bus to the race. The first time we did it we took internal buses. Going to the race was fine but after getting on internal bus was not great. Every time since, including tomorrow, we drive to the front then get on the bus to the race.

ATTQOTD: I agree with others and would not try that. I know how much I hurt when I do a half after only running shorter distances so I can only imagine the pain of a full.

As a side-note, all this Marathon Weekend talk and posts on social media has me pricing rooms for Wine and Dine. 🤦‍♀️Someone help me, it's an addiction!

ATTQOTD: Like others have said, it may be possible, but it would be painful. I might try it myself, but I'm also a moron (I actually almost registered for WDW marathon 2018 without training and would have walked most of it, and in hindsight I'm glad I didn't, because I think it would have discouraged me from wanting to tackle the distance again in the future).

I havent quite gotten to pricing rooms, but i'm almost there...

Possible, but not smart.

ATTQOTD: Everybody is different. So, this isn't my advice to you but my answer if it *was* me. And that answer is it is not possible for me. I find the accomplishment of those that walk (or walk a significant portion of) a marathon is something I cannot share. I would rather try and run 30 miles than try to walk 15. That's longer on my feet and I do not have the mental capacity to keep my mind occupied for 7 hours of activity. Those that can - I salute you. But I could not even attempt it. If in that situation I, personally, would either defer or eat the registration.

It is an addiction. I have priced them, mentioned the race to DH and there it sits. Now if Walt Disney World would do a 15 month annual pass promo that would help me convince him.

My other issue is that the race I want to do for time will likely be either the following weekend or the weekend after.

I was already planning on Wine and Dine - all this marathon talk has me trying to cook up a scheme to do Marathon Weekend again, like full/challenge level! Talk about dreaming big because of everything I'm reading on here

I’m already looking at DVC points charts for Marathon Weekend 2021....

I feel you as I booked POP on Tuesday!:flower1:
But it is a family race-cation and now I want to buy a Princess half bib so I can go all by myself.

Excellent, thank you. I am assuming there is parking there?

You stay there often? Do you camp or do a cabin? I have never camped there but I am excited to. I am assuming it is as nice as it looks?

it’s certainly possible, but as @jennamfeo said, it’s likely to be absolutely terrible. Walking or running for 26.2 miles takes training and effort no matter how fast or slow you are. I’d eat the race fee and volunteer instead.

More ATTQOTD: In Spring 2017, I was trained up to run the Maine Coast Marathon. The day before, the weather indicated a full-on Noreaster with high winds, driving rain and temps in the 40's. Having suffered through the horrible experience I referenced in my last post, I wasn't interested in fighting through the terrible weather just to say I did it. Instead, I ran a half marathon here in Mass in beautiful weather and ran my second fastest half ever. Never regretted the decision.
