Things that might go away after

my first thought was Communion in the Catholic Church. The only ways we ever take it is when we are up front and the first to go. But I have always told my kids as long as they would so much have a sniffle they have not been allowed to go. I have a feeling changes may be made after this (here in Ohio right now though we can't even attend Mass)

Edited to add: or any other that may pass around a cup as I admit I am not familiar with other ways.

Our church (Methodist) has always had tiny, individual disposable cups. We use bread, not wafers - & the pieces of bread are spread out on a platter with the minister holding it & people pick up 1 piece of bread. I think our communion will pretty much stay the same.

None of the Catholic churches I've been to around where I live give wine to the congregation at all. Communion wafers only.

Great responses so far. I didn't see this one and may have missed it in the responses, but I think the cruise industry is in for a very tough number of years, and what it survives as will look a lot different than the way it looks now.

We have a cruise booked with Norwegian in October and we will be cancelling.
NCL has always been very proactive about encouraging hand washing with sinks near the buffet, has sanitiser stations all over their ships, and even have crew that spray your hands getting on the ship from excursions and at the buffet-happy, happy, washy, washy songs are common from the staff.
Still, I just don't think I am ready to take a chance on a cruise ship yet, no matter what procedures are in place.

Businesses in Chinatown were so bad that I think it was our mayor who asked people to support them.

Same in Seattle. Although I am wondering if the lack of sanitary conditions in many of those restaurants is just as much as a reason for the decrease. The health department posts inspection signs in all restaurants here. You can get Excellent, Good, Okay, and Needs Improvement. Walking around in Chinatown you see plenty of Okay and Needs Improvement signs.

Like PP, our Catholic church also did away with the wine a while back. We also did away with shaking hands during the exchange of peace. We still exchange peace by turning and waving at neighbors, but no hand shaking. I think this will become more commonplace across parishes once masses resume. Currently, our church is in the minority with these things.

Self serve of any condiments and utensils at fast casual and fast food places.

Maybe this cris will accelerate the use of contactless payment for transactions at POS, instead of cash. This is also an area where the US is behind many other developed countries.
I don’t know. The virus lives much longer on just about anything else, so your credit/debit card touching a terminal, or your fingers putting in a pin, or even your phone touching a touch point may be more hazardous than cash. They haven’t really proven it one way or the other. The only thing proven is simply not being physically present when you pay, which isn’t always practical (just ask the people ordering grocery delivery who are now on waiting lists more than a week long). I don’t want to contaminate my cards or phone (especially the phone which is close to my face for talking). I don’t know for sure yet what my long term payment plans are. Sticking to my budget is easier with cash (don’t have, don’t spend), and I don’t have to worry about my cards being compromised. My sister, who uses her cards all the time, gets compromised a lot, even at her bank. But I do want to reduce my virus risk as low as I can, so everything is on the table to accomplish that.

As to the question at hand, I agree that buffets in their current format will go away. They could go back to a cafeteria format, where the food is behind glass and plated for you. A person could still visit the line and get more, so AYCE wouldn’t have to go away, but the contamination risk would be greatly reduced, even for things like norovirus.

It will survive. There will be that one lone cruise ship that they will never let dock. It will still be floating around out there, 5 years later, as people keep getting sick and they're on Covid-24 as it keeps mutating onboard. :scared:

I hope that's how they do it, rather than totally eliminating them!

And I agree with everyone who said handshaking will fall out of favor as well (which I really won't mind!)

Honestly, I don't see much changing, after we are outside a 3-6 month window. Maybe, people will be better about handwashing. Maybe more touch pay / app pay options. Buffets on cruise ships might change, but not elsewhere. Restaurants aren't going to want to pay to have extra people on the line scooping for people (and that goes for anything that would cost money, require extra labor like extra cleaning).

Some people will be anti-hand shakes and hugs, but I think the majority of people will have missed that human connection and will be even more touchy feely. Humans are resilient, which is how we made it this far. People will just tell themselves that we just had a pandemic, what are the odds something like that will happen again (I know pandemics don't work that way) and just go back to how things used to be.
