Emergency Food Supply

Is there a food shortage in your area? I'm not aware of supply chain interruptions. We were food shopping this morning and the only thing out of stock was toilet paper and paper towel. Ground beef was slim pickins but it was there. I don't think most people have the space to store 3 months of even non-perishable food.

What is the basis of your assertion?

We tried a Walmart pickup, that wasn't very successful, so DH had to also go to the grocery store. Neither place had pork of any kind. Chicken was extremely limited. Walmart didn't have any. At the grocery store, he found some bone in chicken thighs. The only other chicken they had was necks, gizzards & hearts. There is still a shortage in some areas. That said, we could never store three months of food.

Some supermarkets here are poorly stocked. I went to one this morning and many sections had little or no stock. The meat case was about 90% empty. Sections of produce had nothing. Bread, frozen food and dairy were down more than 50%. A few packages of TP and paper towels which is actually an improvement over last week. I went to a second market and was able to get the rest of my list. This one was down stock in almost every department as well but much better stocked than the first. Seeing this situation week after week makes people think they have to stock up whenever they can.

Our actual grocery store has a MUCH better selection of produce and meat than Walmart does, but they both had some things that were limited. This week it was ground beef. Last week it was chicken.

The ONLY reason people would need an emergency 3 month supply of food is if there is total chaos panic buying by people like the OP. If everyone just carries on, food-wise, like normal there wouldn't be any shortages. Not TP, not paper towels. Just because you are staying home doesn't mean you need MORE food.

I was just in the store and there was plenty of fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, etc....what is the given food supply situation?

Ah, Saturday night entertainment!

From your article above:

Empty shelves in supermarkets should not be much of a concern,” he said. “It is not a supply problem – it is a logistics problem. There is enough supply for all, as long as everyone stays calm and stops hoarding. We may tend to waste food if we hoard more than required, and hoarding would also artificially increase food prices because of the pressure on the supply chain.”

So it seems your advice would be contradictory to the article you cited. But I know you're just having some fun! :ssst:

Not wanting to be alarmist, but a 3 month emergency food supply right now seems the common sense approach, given the food supply situation, Never thought I would advocate this as an American but prudence dictates otherwise,

Godspeed.

please do not panic. My husband Works in a food bank supply warehouse. They get 15 tractor trailer every few days there’s plenty of food no one’s going hungry it’s out there it may not seem like it but it is out there. They supply over 90 food banks with food every day

Not true and this is part of the reason why stores run out. We went from a family of 3: Hubby who travelled overseas a lot. I was gone 2 days a week to school 2 hours away. Daughter had tons of extra- curricular and ate out a lot. So I cooked once a week, twice at the most. I ran the dishwasher every 3 or 4 days. Our 23yo lived at grad school 8 hours away and ate at his job. Lived in a dorm. Our 25yo lived alone in an apartment 6 hours away. Hello Fresh and eating out. Now all of those people are here 24/7. All 5. I cook every day. I run the dishwasher once or twice a day.

Think about my city where 70 percent of kid get free lunch and breakfast at school. They are at home. A lot of people are out A LOT. So now they have to cook at home.

The demand is totally different. My town of 14,000 has 1 Walmart and 1 grocery store. It also had 10 fast food and maybe as many mom and pop restaurants. So now all 14,000 are buying food for a lockdown. Where they are home all day. They don't have money for fast food and are also scared it will infect them, so many are closed now. (Not because of order)

It isn't hoarding. If you are at home for 2 weeks with 5-8 people in your household. You need a lot of food.

How do you figure? We had to do 20 more meals than normal (kids, DW, and I all home for lunch). No, we don't normally pack a lunch. So yes, for us, staying home means we do need MORE food. To say nothing about the snacks and drinks we would normally have at work and now supply at home.

Groan. Now you’re saying it’s not enough to share articles, but you expect us to actually READ them first? Boooo 2020!

Even if you need more food, there still isn't a FOOD SHORTAGE.

Honestly, it's not funny to try and scare people who may just be reading the boards and see these types of posts. Regulars may know (but not admit) who's serious, who's not, who's posting to be inflammatory, etc., but others may not.

It's just really unkind.
