conspiracy theories

When DH17 was around 13 and we were going to WDW, he started calling Illuminations Illuminati. Then he made up up this story about how they used Duffy to control everybody at Disney World with all the merch, the 3 hrs of child brainwashing on resort TV at night, etc. But people felt something wasn't right and that's why they all started hating Duffy. Lol.

Flat Earthers confuse me on all kinds of levels.

The Flat-Earth theory works on people because it appeals to their innate senses. The land seems flat to us so it's easier to believe. Now, forget that if you are in the right location with a clear view you can see a slight curve on the horizon - most people have never seen it with their own eyes, so they can buy into it becuase it feels like it could be true. Of course, the one thing I've never understood it the purpose of that supposed lie. What's to gain from convincing people the Earth is round when it it's not? That's the part that makes no sense.

The flat earthers are interesting. To me I think it appeals to fill a hole of powerlessness. Thinking you're more clever than all the successful people in life does wonders for self esteem.

What’s different today is internet access and social media. It is just so easy to find like minded individuals and misinformation to support any claim. Literally anybody can start a rumor, create a bunch of bots to support and boom. Before you know it it’s out there and gains traction

I agree. It is WAY easier now with the internet to post some crackpot idea on a blog/website or social media and suddenly find a large interested audience. Too may people read something from a dubious source and then race off to tell others. Reminds me of those emails that sometimes still pop up that start out .......'you need to pass this on to EVERYONE you know .....'.......ummmm yea right.....LOL. Too many gullible people seem to still fall for that nonsense.

They ordered an investigation because there is evidence that it happened. There’s been research for 40 years about it. The house would not pass an amendment if there weren’t some evidence to support the investigation. The fact that something cited as a fringe “conspiracy theory” by small brained sheeple for 40 years is being investigated by the pentagon is huge
Or they ordered an investigation to satisfy some crackpot conspiracy theorist constituents? Wouldn't be the first time. :)

I'm wondering - do you think we will find out the results of the investigation? If the investigation finds that the government did not in fact create and release Lyme disease, would you believe it, or would that be just one more cover-up?

Ok. You keep believing what you’re spoon fed to believe and I’ll use my big brain to actually deduce facts from reality. Some people just have to be told what to believe, and some people are smart enough to figure it out for themselves 😃

The key is never allowing yourself to believe something so much that you are unwilling to evaluate opposing evidence.

People in this world who I distrust the most - people who claim to "know" the truth - especially truths which are unknowable.

Yes, I think this is definitely part of it. I think it's also the same way cult leaders cultivate their followers ... make them feel like by being in this cult, they have "special" knowledge and information that others don't or can't understand. It makes people feel important and smart to have this special knowledge, and solidifies their commitment to the cult.

They didn’t create it. They released it., not necessarily purposely. And from the years of research I’ve done on it, I’ve already come to the conclusion that it’s true. I don’t need them to tell me. Just like the years of research I’ve done on ufos, came to the conclusion that they exist when government said they didn’t, but I didn’t care what they said because preponderance of evidence suggested otherwise. And now they admit it. And if they say Lyme release didn’t happen, well the pentagon has never been known to lie! And I doubt there’s that many “crackpot constituents” that would warrant the time, money and energy of an investigation.

I gave you multiple chances to prove your claim. You failed to do so.

Still open to reading up on it if you can provide a reputable source that you think proves it.

Lordy, half my family from one particular branch. 🙄 I spend probably too much time blocking the sources of these theories in a desperate attempt to keep myself from responding to the ridiculousness. They’re like rain though, they just keep coming. I think what makes me craziest is that they can’t and won’t verify anything they’re posting. They’re just copying and pasting or hitting ‘share.’ My motto through all of this has been “give a little grace.” I think for a good majority of them it’s easier to believe a conspiracy theory than look at the reality of the situation. For them it’s somehow less scary and gives them a sense of “control.” My “grace” meter is just about tapped though.
My mom's husband sent me a conspiracy theory video just last night. I didn't even make it half way through. I really don't understand that way of thinking, but I will say that the few people I have known over the years who tend to believe those things all have very similar personality traits.
My best friend messaged me a video with no explanation. Without even clicking on it I knew it would be some off the wall theory. I told him very plainly I wouldn’t watch it and not to send anymore. To his credit he hasn’t.

The most ridiculous conspiracy theories in my opinion are:

Gulf on Tonken
Operation Paper Clip
Tuskegee experiment
MK Ultra

I mean anyone who thinks the government would do anything to hurt their citizens is just insane and should be evaluated by a medical professional. They are dangerous, too.

I heard of one where birds are really some kind of biological robot the government uses to spy on us. “Birds aren’t real” it’s called. But, there have been “conspiracy theories” that have been proven true. For decades it’s been said that the government released lymes disease which has recently come out as true (google it), the JFK thing (any intelligent person can tell there was more then one shooter), government finally admitted to ufos being real after saying it was a “conspiracy theory” for 70 years, Bobby Kennedy also obviously had a second gunman and his own son wants his case reopened, government admitted to mind control experiments using lsd on inmates and people against their will and knowledge, etc., etc. My point is, just because the government or the majority of sheeple tell you something is a “conspiracy theory” doesn’t mean it really is. Think for yourself and do research. Don’t blindly believe what you’re told. Though most of those listed by op are ridiculous.
Seriously, didn't they prove it was a now deceased Secret Service Agent whose gun went off accidentally as he climbed onto the back of the limo after the President was hit?

It's super dangerous to question the government. I think all information should be removed except the sources of information approved by the government. That way no one needs to question anything they are told. China does it the right way.

This post perfectly sums up the mindset of a conspiracy theorists:
-Done a lot of "research" (reading internet forums and/or facebook posts)
-Thinks others are believing anything they are given
-If evidence comes out that proves them wrong, it's false

You want me to send you books, academic papers, interviews with scientists? Do your own research. I
don’t need to prove anything to you. Do t really care what you believe. I was just posting that some conspiracy theories are truth. The pentagon doesn’t go around investigating every theory. There’s an investigation because there’s evidence. Weak, small minded people are too afraid of the stigma associated with these theories to do any real research into the subject. And that’s ok. Im a medical professional with a lot of education. I’m trusted to write prescriptions and I hold peoples lives in my hands. I’m not a “crack pot” I just use my brain.
