Could the reopening be pushed back?

I live 90 minutes south of NYC. Those who have been through it know the horrific reality of what COVID is. It's not fake news. It's not just the flu. It has not gone away. It has not been defeated.

Personally, as much as I want WDW to reopen, it has shaken my confidence in Disney that they have their guests well being at heart that they're going ahead with the reopening.

Disney is in a very tough spot, no matter what they do someone is going to find fault with them. They are dammed if they do and dammed if they don't. They can't win no matter what move they make.

I do believe that Disney is doing everything they can to keep their guests safe. It is up to each one of us to decide if we think it's safe to go, seems pretty simple to me. I understand the frustration that so many are feeling with having to cancel and reschedule their trips only to have to cancel again not mention the loss of points. I'm among the more fortunate group that doesn't have a trip scheduled until January 2021 but I'm not foolish enough not to realize that I too may have to cancel my trip. I'm hoping that doesn't happen but I'm realistic enough to understand that it could.

I hope that as time passes your confidence in Disney will be restored. I have confidence that it will, this too will pass. :tink:

There is just no accounting for the ignorance of some people. That's a real nice lesson that adult was teaching those children. That's a big part of the problem with our world today, people are no longer teaching their children respect for their fellow man...very sad state of affairs. Wish it were different.

Is it possible that the large spikes we are seeing in many areas of the country due to the protesting and riots that have been going on across the country? I know that doesn't solve the problem of whether or not WDW will open as scheduled but it would be nice to put the blame for the spikes at the source. JMHO...
So, there may be something to this. For instance, today in Alabama, cases were high (but not highest ever), however, what was interesting was that of the shift of cases. For the last few weeks, it had been driven by Montgomery, Mobile, and somewhat Jefferson and Tuscaloosa counties. Today, by far Jefferson county had the most cases. It was also the site of the largest protest, so you could be starting to see the effect.

Another thing going on (and you see this in Texas as they shut them down today), is contact tracing has identified a number of outbreaks, primarily in bars. In our city, 4 of them have shut down...

Cancelling my July 8 check in. Florida is screwed right now. Last place in the US I want to take my family right now, and it's bumming me out.

Right there with you. Canceled our July 11th check in, which would be 2 weeks from today.

Thanks everyone for updating with info. We have a late August date, so we'll keep watching for progress until our banking and holding deadline (end of July).

I assure you what is described here is absolutely happening in some areas. My wife is affiliated with a hospital which used their ICU as a Covid unit. At one point during the April spike, she was told that they had "10 patients in ICU but only 5 really needed to be there." It was more convenient for the hospital to keep all of the Covid patients isolated. However, if those 5 ICU beds were needed for critical care patients, they had the capacity to relocate the 5 non-critical admissions.

If hospitals are simply counting bodies in beds, all 10 would have been counted as being in the ICU. But only half were receiving ICU-level care. It's not data manipulation to make sure that the counts accurately reflect the care that's being provided.
I hear you - my husband works at a specialty hospital that has no ICU. They canceled their elective surgeries early on (it was a very unpopular decision at the time, but what a difference hindsight can make), converted a couple of inpatient floors to a COVID unit, and then converted several ORs to "ICUs" where they could house 2 patients on the one ventilator unit. I don't know if those patients were counted as "ICU" - I think they were, because they were counting every patient on a vent as being "ICU". But there were also many patients on regular hospital floors who were on oxygen (through a tube or a mask, but not mechanically ventilated, because they could breathe on their own). Those patients were not counted as "ICU" patients. That was part of the problem with the Javits Center being used to house covid patients - almost all of them were on some form of oxygen, and that couldn't be done at the Javits, so they ended up using it as a "step down" - patients still very weak, but didn't need supplemental oxygen any more - so they could make room in the regular hospitals for people who needed oxygen.

Once Disney announced their plans for opening, I thought, if we can safely get to the Disney bubble, I think we will be ok. It's just going to the airport and then going from the airport to the Disney bubble that had us slightly concerned. But given recent news about Disney Springs and mask compliance, I wouldn't count DS as being "in the bubble." :(

ETA: even though just yesterday I said there was really good mask compliance here in NYC, today everyone walking around seems to be using their mask as a chin strap. (On the subway, everyone is masked and maintaining distance, but not so much walking around)
😷🤦‍♀️

In my institution we had designated covid non ICU units set up in the hospital otherwise putting non ICU patients into an ICU and charging for that level of care is insurance fraud.

I think I have a lot of confidence in Disney wanting to protect me as best as possible while opening, with all the recommended protocols and requirements. My lack of confidence right now is with the staggering number of people who are more concerned about finding ways to circumvent the requirements than they are the health and well-being of those near them. THAT'S what will likely delay my return to a place like Disney. They'll try to enforce the requirements, but a small percentage of people will make it tough - and will make it less safe.

And the trend is clearly the wrong direction. And, by the way, you can make that comment about most of the country in general. The country is setting all time highs every day. Florida is a big part of that (more than 20%), but it's not just Florida.
I know, we live in Delaware near The Beach and we have 2 couples that we see, otherwise no thank you. I know one quiet beach that we go to but not next week. Be safe out there, remember wear a mask and safe distancing is the key.

The order is for "STAND ALONE" bars.

Any place that serves FOOD and Alcohol is NOT effected.
This almost certainly closes down a few places that were previously open: AbracadaBar, maybe Martha's Vinyarrd, maybe some of the other previously open Lounges that serve food as an afterhtought.

The science seems to be that hanging out in air conditioned spaces (inside) is a good space for droplet spread. And as people keep pointing out when talking about other aspects of the reopen, it's Florida in June-July. People do like AC.

As much as I would like to go to WDW, and I don't want my DVC points to expire, I just can't think of booking anything right now. The situation with COVID changes so rapidly.

Agree that's the way it should be done. The question is whether every hospital administrator is accurately making the distinction in their reporting numbers. I don't see any problem with questioning and verifying the accuracy. In and of itself, that doesn't reflect an attempt to manipulate the data.

As a Floridian... I get it. Cases are UP, in order to close down bars without closing down bars... they can’t serve liquor, as of today. Groups of people just don’t work ... 14 states are quarantining those coming From fla. They are locally saying 1 in 5 is getting Covid. Not that it’s worse case, hospital scenario but an impact none the less. Stressful for All of us :(
Stay safe!

Aug 4th check in and these numbers are making me worry... I've banked all 2019 points but have 58 2018 that need to be used before Dec. Ughhh
