Walt Disney Company Q3 Earnings Report

Buy or rent, it doesn’t really matter. Come October its on D+ for $7 a month until streaming is no longer a thing. I dont believe newer projects for Disney have any obligations to other networks or services like they did prior to 2020 with Starz and Netflix.

Trolls made $300M under PVOD. Granted, that was in early April when everything outside of essential businesses were closed in every state. So there was more time on people’s hands to pay for movies like Trolls because there was nothing to do.

From what I’m tallying through film twitter it seems like about 1 out of every 10 people are saying they’ll buy it. 6 out of 10 saying they’ll wait until its no extra charge, and 3/10 saying they had no interest in seeing it outside of a theater anyway.

Doesn’t look good for Disney from initial reactions. This was certainly not the brightest plan as a company considering this movie would have had worldwide appeal and likely crossed the 1B dollar mark at the box office. But not much they can do with states not allowing theaters to reopen. But if you want a lap dance, gentleman’s clubs are open...because those are safer than movie theaters

Trolls was the event that will never happen again. 1st to do it. Every country and state shut down. Easter weekend. Someone, anyone looking for something to have a happy kid holiday memory. And it hasn't been repeated yet. Scoob! did not release numbers b/c it didn't top it.

And we've only opened more and more since Scoob!.

Edit to Add: Rumor is Scoob! only got 40% of Trolls...

Our family was very excited for Mulan and will most certainly pay the $30 to see it as soon as it's available. If that means we have access to it from then on, all the better. My youngest is 11 and oldest is 20. Just adding to the stats.

I'd say it will be PPV for 2 months minimum and then if Black Widow and/or Soul go PPV due to COVID numbers still being brutal and/or the theater industry bottoming out Mulan will be inclusive with general subscription

I’m just not seeing the bright side in this. If Mulan doesn’t do well, there will be future implications within the company. If it does well, the theaters die.

The latter is the bright side. There are so many crappy theaters around that this will hopefully force them to up their game or go out of business.

It's lose/lose/lose for everything...it's gonna torch Mulan's international numbers b/c Chinese will now pirate it (with piracy rampant there) - it means Disney has more faith in its Domestic fans than in the Chinese theatrical release for the movie (which is the opposite of how they felt pre-Covid, since this was made to appeal to that market)...and Disney is expecting a loss either way, but wants to really pull from the fans as much as they think they can...

The problem is, this movie was projected to be another billion dollar film for Disney. Without the box office money that would come from ticket sales, the movie doesn’t come close to that projected number. If they break even (~450M) its not a “loss” but its still at minimum half of what they were hoping for when they made it. There are consequences for these types of things that could potentially have negative impacts in the future of entertainment.

I wish there could be a hybrid eventually. Still release in theaters and then also on Demand at same time.

Then those of you who like to go to movies can do that and the rest of us can rent at home!

If the theater industry survives the pandemic, I think that’s the best scenario, and one that I feel should have been worked on years ago. Even if they charged a bit more for immediate on demand streaming of a new release (say $40-$50) because they had to share revenues with the theater companies. They could then still release to theaters and all would be happy.

I'm honestly shocked that people expected Mulan to do so well! I dont know anyone in my real life who even liked the cartoon version! :p
I think it’s mainly the thought that the film would do exceedingly well in the Chinese market. I too haven’t spoken to anyone at work or in my friend circle who were excited for the film (or like you said even cared for the cartoon). I know I had no interest in seeing this movie. I’ve never even seen the cartoon version!

Am I the only one shocked that a company loses 2+ billion in 3 months and the majority of the posts are about a movie going straight to streaming?

You guys are the best! :)

Well, we knew they were losing at least $2B+ yesterday...the Mulan news was actual news today...

And now the 3rd "change" to the Mulan news...you don't rent it, but you don't own it...instead, it's "access while a D+ member" - that's WAY worse than Amazon Prime's purchase options...

It’s a different ballgame than Amazon Prime though. Amazon doesn’t offer films that are just released in theaters. You basically have to look at this as you’ll pay $30 to get access to the film until the time it’s released for free to a Disney+ (as long as you keep your subscription). It’s better than only getting it for 48 hours.

What! I love Mulan. I'll Make a Man out of You was the jam. But it came out when I was in high school and it was just a fun movie and I have fun memories associated with it. I honestly however have zero interest in this new version.

So it's virtually a perpetual contract that you can watch it anytime you want so long as you keep pumping cash into our machine. No thanks....I'll wait to own a movie without a Disney+ cloud over my head.
