News Round Up 2020

Completely off topic - Is there still speculation that Disney is trying to replace monorails?

Now that there will be walkways from two Magic Kingdom hotels (3 if you like to walk), boats from all hotels to MK - would Disney ever consider getting rid of the monorail ( I know, I know) and just building Skyliner stations at each park and people can connect at hubs like CBR for the different parks? The MK hotels would just have to take buses to Epcot instead of monorail (sniff, sniff ;) ), or maybe Skyliner can connect the two parks in some convoluted way.

It just seems that after the glitches in the beginning, the Skyliner is really turning into a great way of getting to/from parks. Also more hotels would benefit - especially those with bus only right now.

And the monorail is a money drain, antiquated, falling apart... just a thought! I know it won't happen, but I haven't even been on the Skyliner and I already love it more than the monorail. Just the chimes sound alone! :D

I can’t see it happening for decades at this point. They’re currently renovating the interiors of the monorails, which will buy them another 10+ years of service out of this fleet I’d think. Then there is the fact that they’re currently working on the Poly monorail station as we speak. To then look to tear down all of the monorail structure (and what do you then do with the giant holes in the side of the Contemporary), I just don’t see it ever happening.

Now, I could see them adding Skyliner to a park like AK, connecting AKL and possibly even CSR, but even that is years and years off as it would be too cost prohibitive in the current environment.

I just think we’re stuck (depending on your viewpoint of them) with the monorails for the near and far future.

Edited to add: I would love it though. I’m definitely a Skyliner fan. I really have always hated being crammed into a monorail car with 10+ other people all up and close. I much prefer the constantly running Skyliner cars, and especially now with only 1 party per vehicle!

Well I hadn't thought about the Contemporary! Maybe a nice running stream down the middle, some plants ... :D

At least I'd like to see an AK to AKL to CSR line as you mentioned. I just think in the long run, instead of just spending money on fixing the monorail, it would benefit them more to add additional transportation options to the other hotels. Obviously I don't mean now with everything that's going on. Just looking into the future.

I don't really care for the monorail anymore. Our last two stays (last one at Poly) we did any other mode of transportation we could rather than take the monorail. It was crowded, kind of smelled and stalled a few times, once stuck for almost 30 minutes.

I don't recall there ever being speculation that Disney would try to replace monorails.

Well, talk about a really click-bait headline. There is no such thing as a "AR15 handgun". An AR 15 is a semi-automatic rifle. Not easily concealed.

Do everybody a favor folks and don't click on this "news story".
If you notice, it says “AR-15, handgun” as in an AR-15 AND a handgun. It also clarifies this pretty plainly in the article. I think people should be welcome to read whatever they want, provided they read it correctly. :)

I recall some kind of talk on message boards. People talking about a certain company they could contract with.

I didn't say Disney said, but posters sure discussed it. Found the thread and it was about a company called Bombardier and the thread title was New Monorail Fleet Ordered? Full of speculation. ;)

I'm not carazy!!!! :rotfl:

I think sometimes people jump to conclusions when they see something that doesn't agree with their point of view. This isn't clickbait, you read it wrong. The guy got caught doing something he shouldn't, trying to sneak firearms into his room on property. Disney is quite clear about their firearms policy, and I wish they had tossed him from property for violating it. But instead, Disney basically cut him some slack after asking for police assistance and just held his firearms until he left.

There definitely had been speculation that they would be replacing the monorails, but as in "new set of monorail trains" not "replace with something that is not a monorail" so perhaps that is some of the confusion

the most concrete was when Bob Gurr said they he understand they had ordered new ones and there was a note of a significant order in the manufactures financials one year which further fueled that

As to if they would ever replace them with something else, I really can't see it at the Magic Kingdom - just too embedded. Most I could see would be to convert the tracks to something more standard (the Disney monorails have to be custom built as the bean is an atypical width).

I could see them replace the EPCOT line at some point - my understanding is that the supports for that line weren't made as strong as the original MK loop and are in worse shape, plus it is a pretty long stretch to maintain and not like there are hotels directly on it or anything

Yes, that's what i meant by replacing - the cars. And I thought maybe it's just time (n the future obviously) to scrap the entire thing. ;)

But I suppose structurally next to impossible.

Still, I hope to see expansion of the Skyliner.
