Debt Dumpers 2020

So I cover my daughter (she is 25), myself and my husband on my insurance. My daughter will drop off next year when we redo it for work so I was thinking that the savings I would put towards my supplemental retirement. Yesterday we are notified that the State (I work for the State) is wanting to change our insurance to outrageous deductibles and outrageous premiums. Hoping it doesn't get passed!

So daughter in law gets ill nothing bad but then loses the senses of taste and smell..test positive..off work with pay and extra pay....Honest Abe son tells his employer his wife is ill with Covid...he tests negative and told to stay home for 2 weeks...no pay unless you work and no Covid pay..company says they applied and were told no...he is in a union and construction and deemed esstenial worker...total of 3 weeks off no pay...Nice huh? some get it and some don't..
I work in a union position. Have his call his union to see if there is any sort of Covid disability he can sign up for.

i feel for you and hope for the best. my former government employer did the same thing. the rates for active employees are outrageous now but what they've done to retirees is shameful. since they changed their hiring policies about a decade ago to no longer provide any form of retiree health care for new hires they are hell bent on doing whatever they can to eliminate the existing retirees and those they are obligated to in the future. they've done this by purposely choosing the most expensive retiree healthcare plans they can find. their share of cost is capped so it matters not to them but we ended up dropping my retiree coverage when my monthly premium for dh and i would have run over a thousand ABOVE my full monthly pension :sad2: thank goodness dh and i are both medicare eligible.

Hi all! I'm still here, still have been reading along in the 2020 thread. I just haven't been posting much on the boards. I guess I never posted any goals this year - oops!

2020 has been a year though. My company was busier than ever with the covid stockpiling people were doing. We got a couple bonuses for having to work and they fed us lunch 2-3 times a week for 2.5mths or so which was nice. I got to carry around a critical employee letter. Then this summer I got a new position at my company which means less crazy hours and less crazy OT... but my official start ended up pushed back about 3mths with people testing positive at work 🙃 I'm in it now and really enjoying it so far, and enjoying having every weekend off for the first time in 5 years.

Our most exciting things for the year are, we bought a house! And got a cat. We closed at the end of October so have been getting settled. Ended up just putting up what we had for Christmas decorations vs trying to decide what we want to do for regular decor for now :goodvibes I am soooooo enjoying having a place to put all of our things after living in 2 tiny bedrooms at my in laws, though they were wonderful.

And this little sweetheart showed up back in May as a stray, and got really attached to me, so we ended up bringing her with us. She's adjusted very well to being a spoiled indoor cat.

Pre house buying we had paid off our cars and student loans, so we had just been socking money away towards house, vehicle repair/replacement fund (hopefully a ways off though im due for tires), and emergency fund so its been weird to spend all this money on house things lol. Hopefully next year I will have some actual goals to share!

I work at a hospital and we don't get paid (have to use PTO) if we have to quarantine after being exposed to someone who has/had Covid. So 14 days of using PTO time or not getting paid if you don't have the time accumulated. Only problem is, how honest are people going to be if they know they were exposed and are not going to get paid for it or have to use up all of their PTO time? I think that it is like opening up a can of worms because by not being honest and telling someone that you had exposure to someone who tested positive, they are putting all of us who are trying to stay safe at a huge risk. Just please stay safe everyone as this virus is not a joke. We are supposed to start getting vaccinated within the next 2 weeks so hopefully, no bad side effects.

I use it, but I use the old version. I am actually getting ready to migrate to the new version for 2021 though because my ancient Macbook I use the desktop version on is dying. I do really like the system overall and the every dollar principle of budgeting works well for me. The biggest complaint/thing I don't like about the new system is the inability to roll over deficits in a certain category. For example, if we paid for my husband's hotel on our credit card for a work trip in November and he doesn't get reimbursed for it until December, I would roll over the negative balance into next month's category and then fund it once we receive that reimbursement. New YNAB will no longer allow you to do that because it's "not a true picture of your budget" and you should be funding each category in full or not spending the money. Well, I don't need to fund that category because I'm not actually spending my money when I'm getting reimbursed two weeks later :crazy2: So now you have to manipulate it by going and essentially backdating that reimbursement payment for the previous month's budget. Otherwise, YNAB, will automatically subtract your overage amount from your income in the next month's budget.

I hope that made sense! I do really like the system otherwise.
Sorry to post twice quickly but just saw this post and I can help with it:

I have the paid version of YNAB! I used to use free versions like Mint, but never managed to stick with it. I also was skeptical at the idea of paying for the budgeting software but for me it turned out to be worth it. Not only does it automate a lot of things, it also makes it easy and clear to understand, and also lays everything out very clearly on where your money goes. I started using YNAB nearly two years ago, and since then I am completely debt free (except the mortgage) and building up savings better. I am able to live in a method of I budgeted certain dollars to a certain pot and once they are gone they are gone. It also allows for "Zero Sum" budgeting. Every dollar is assigned a "home" or category. I can reassign the category but every dollar is accounted for, which is quite nice. I also like that I can set different types of goals. Amounts to save for saving, amounts to set aside monthly as part of an expected spend, etc. I also now purchase just about everything on my Costco Citi card and then pay it out of main checking, but because both are linked in YNAB I can still keep it to assigned categories and whatnot. Its actually quite cool. I think there are a bunch of how to videos about YNAB on YouTube if you give it a look.

Hope all that helps!

Thank you both! That was really helpful. I've been using it the past week and I'm really liking it, so I think I'll continue on with it. I have definitely been watching some Youtube videos so I can get the best use out of it. I think I'll continue with it once the trial is over.

I think I have finally purchased my last Christmas gifts. Just waiting on a few to hopefully deliver in time and get them wrapped. I enjoy this time of year and picking out gifts I think people will enjoy and yet the constant spend, spend, spend actually gets old and I can't wait for January where I do not have to look at my credit card statement every other day.

Off to plan my 2021 goals and will get them posted in the new thread - one of which will be to try and be more active in the thread next year. I go through moments of ups and downs of "I want to be engaged with others!" to "Why am I doing this - no one really cares?" despite knowing how great you all are. :)

Just keep in mind, when you're "being good," it's not to please us; we're strangers on the internet. I don't even know your name and if I rode an elevator with you I wouldn't know it was you.
Talking about goals and seeing our progress helps to keep us motivated and inspired. It's about having like-minded people to chat with who have similar goals and can relate to our struggles. :goodvibes

It's kind of like having a diary that answers you back and cheers you on. :woohoo::cheer2:

Hey guys, don't forget to check your state's sites for unclaimed funds. I do a couple of times a year and while I always come up snake eyes, the DH has a $24 check. My mom, however, has nearly $100 in gift cards.
You've reminded me dh has $150 from a college job but im having trouble finding anything to tie him to that college address to send as proof 🙄

i've got the same situation for a few hundred for my late mom but it's an address from the 1940's i have no way of connecting her to. for that reason, as i've been purging old paperwork of my own/dh i've taken to keeping some proof of every address we've lived at during our marriage.
