The Broadway show thread where we discuss all things Broadway

Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts announces new Free Shows and a new "Choose What You Pay" pricing for tickets the upcoming spring season. The goal is to make shows more inclusive for the community.

The spring season begins on Feb. 27 and runs until June 15.

"Our spring consists of more than 70 events from February through June with civic activations like community blood drives, and artistry from across disciplines and from every corner of NYC. We're also excited to reopen the David Rubenstein Atrium, which has been largely closed since the pandemic began," said Leah Johnson, Lincoln Center's EVP/Chief of Communications, Marketing and Advocacy Officer, to NBC New York.

All events at the David Rubenstein Atrium are free, first-come, first-serve.

Programs offered like the Passport to the Arts and Lincoln Center Moments are also at no charge to guests with advanced sign-up.

The American Songbook starts mid-April. The series will be held in the Stanley H. Kaplan Penthouse and welcome international artists with a range of styles, such as pop, musical theater, classical, rock and jazz.

This spring season brings together dozens of arts organizations and artists from across New York City and Lincoln Center's own campus, exploring the intersection of culture, civic engagement, and community building through vibrant and varied weekly programming.

In-person performances and activations will take place on the Lincoln Center campus, while Lincoln Center Moments, Passport to the Arts, and Lincoln Center Activate will be available virtually on LincolnCenter.org.

Ok, I have a question. This picture is from the Hairspray National Tour Instagram page, and the comments show that lots of people have issues with the caption underneath. I am clueless…..can someone explain to what people are taking offense?

We need a direct like to the post. The one I see when I go to Twitter doesn't have any comments, unless they've been removed.

Sorry. This was from Instagram and the comments just said things like “This is very insensitive”, “This is harmful, “tasteless” and “Y’all are gross for that”. I was wondering if Dis members took offense to the caption “ setting off sparks like Rosa Sparks” (which is an actual line from the show).

FINALLY!

This is Hugh Jackman back in July 2020, a few months into the Broadway shutdown and hoping back then that they'd start up in the fall of that year. You can see how empty Broadway is. (I get my $1 pizza over there and yes, the street was eerily that empty.)

Now, after way too long delays, false hopes of starting earlier, then both Sutton, then Hugh getting COVID, which cancelled the show for a short while, OPENING NIGHT was last night! 🎼 :rockband::cheer2::woohoo:

On the Red Carpet before the show:

(I'm hoping someone in the audience shot a video of the curtain call to post later if they upload it. )

The mask mandate has been lifted for much of NY state for various types of businesses. However, NYC still has it's own rules (due to having been the first COVID epicenter in the U.S. and how easily COVID spreads here.) And the Broadway theatres still have some vaccination and possible masking requirements. Check the current requirement before you book or see your show.

Yes. The Broadway League still mandates masks through April 30th as well as other protocols. Wouldn’t be shocked if they extend the mandate through the Tonys so there are no issues with illness at that time.
MSG is still no masks if you are fully vaccinated, but I masked for Billy Joel and will mask for Elton John. That arena is too big to be doing stuff like that right now, especially still in the middle of flu season.

Each business varies. I recommend checking their websites and socials.

"Mrs. Doubtfire which closed temporarily last month as Omicron battered New York, announced Friday that it would postpone its reopening until April 14, a month later than anticipated, to give the theater economy a bit more time to rebound.

'The good news is that it looks like the virus is calming down, but there are still a lot of unknowns,' said the show’s lead producer, Kevin McCollum. 'It was just clear that April was a better time to open, given the trends with tourism, and thinking about when families and groups will start to feel comfortable.'

The hiatus left the show’s cast, crew and musicians without work (at least at Doubtfire), but McCollum said he thought it was the best way to attempt to preserve their jobs longer term. And on Friday, he said he had invited the entire cast to return, and was hopeful that they would do so."

Saw Elton at the Garden last night! Absolutely fantastic. He got very emotional knowing last night and tonight were his final shows ever at the garden. Phenomenal show!
If you are lucky to see him in the NY area in the coming weeks or on his farewell tour in general. You will not be disappointed

sounds like some people havent' seen Hairspray. they should have been careful posting stuff.

Rosa Parks was born February 4 so some of it might have been too close proximity to her birthday.

We saw the national tour of Oklahoma today. My DH was in his high school production and while I know most of the music, I don’t recall seeing anything more than bits and pieces of the film. It’s one if DH’s favorites. We are almost speechless, glad we read about before we saw it, I would not have been prepared for the intensity of the show. it was dark and profound and I’m not sure how I’d feel now seeing the original. It would be hard to see it as uplifting and entertainment.

The cast was talented and the dance scene at the beginning of the second act was extremely athletic and captured your attention. the ending was shocking and we are still digesting it and the commentary it makes on societal issues of our times.

Have any of you seen it and what were your thoughts? On a side note, theater was only about 25% sold, very sad. Lady sitting next to us said she went to What the Constitution Means to Me here recently and there were 6 people on the Main Floor.

If anyone happens to be in New York City right now, the SAG Awards pre-show is streaming live, right now, on the jumbotron in Times Square. There is an hour left of the pre-show.

Saw it on Broadway and my sister and I both thought it was a little 😜. Loved Ali Stroker, it did seem darker than what I had remembered. Didn’t care for the uber long dance scene (and I’m a dancer and usually love all things dance 🤷🏽‍♀️).
The free chili was good though 👍🏾

Funny enough I think that dance sequence was like a minute shorter than previous production believe it or not! Dance breaks and ballet sequences were big back in the golden age (I did a production of carousel where we stuck to the original script holy smokes was there a lot of dancing!)

I swear answered this yesterday. We saw it a few months ago. Totally agree, it was VERY dark. It kept my attention, and I'm glad I saw it, but I can't say it totally enjoyed it. I wouldn't want to see it again. We were rather speechless when it was over, it sure wasn't a show where you feel happy and cheerful when the show is over, and the curtain call was very muted after that ending.

I have major issues with Oklahoma!. The content is dark, it just was never played as such until the recent revival. I do think the revival addressed a lot of the problem areas of the show. That said, I have no desire to ever see Oklahoma! again.
