Do you bring in your car to the dealership

I did until my auto hit 100,000 miles and the dealer nitpicked every little thing and gave me an expensive suggested maintenance list.

I took the list to our regular mechanic who reviewed the list and saved us almost $1,000 and knocked off the unnecessary items.

90 000 miles and several years later, never looked back.

Looking to buy a new to us auto to replace it and struggling to think if I want to use that dealer.

Our 2020 Toyota, yes for regular maintenance because the first two years of oil changes/tire rotations are free at the dealer. So the next one will be at my regular independent mechanic. The dealer lists the cost for the services on the invoice, then deduct it so the total bill is zero. Really isn't good advertising because it shows I would have paid $140. It does use a special synthetic oil that is more expensive. My mechanic just raised his price for a non-synthetic oil change to $55, with the special oil it probably will be $85, expensive but cheaper than the dealer.
Our 2018 Ford, no. It has never been back to the dealer since (knock on wood) it hasn't needed any warranty repairs. My independent mechanic has gone all the regular maintenance.

No. I’ve had too many personal horror stories of very expensive “repairs” at dealers. We found a local mechanic we trust for everything except warranty work which has to be done by a dealer.

Yes, we have until their warranties expire, otherwise DH does maintenance and some repairs himself. Our truck has a lifetime warranty so it will always go to the dealer.

I drive a hybrid and haven’t found a local independent mechanic willing to work on it. It is still under warranty so for now, it goes to the dealer.

I used to, but they made too many mistakes and I go to a private shop now. Not sure they're cheaper, but they seem more competent.

Yes, it is a Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle. I doubt anyone but the dealer could work on it.

Only if it's for warranty or recall work and occasionally when we got free oil changes for a year. The reality is that other than the Ford dealer in our town (where we have never bought a car), there are no dealers that are close enough to us to be convenient. The dealer we bought our GMC Acadia from is probably the closest one to us and that's a 25 minute drive. We have a very reputable and trusted mechanic (we've gone to him for over 25 years) who is located less than a mile from my husband's office so that's where we go.

Our Toyota is a Hybrid so it has a 10 year, 150,000 mile warranty on the hybrid components, so anything to do with that will be done for free by the dealer for another 8 years.
We are fortunate to have a growing number of independent shops here that work on hybrids. While hybrids are complex that is a good thing. They are so complex that basically if you plug a scanner into them, they tell you what is wrong.

For everything except oil changes. We have Hondas and really like the customer service we have received for 20 plus years.

Not if at all possible.

I would rather hack off a limb using a toenail clipper than go to the crooks that run any dealership in the world.

In fact I bought a $450 cable and a $100 power supply so I can perform my own updates rather than visit the service department. Every three months I pay for a $50 license to FDRS and update any modules that have updates.

It takes about an hour each time. If I went to the dealer it would take an entire day.

Have never gone to the dealer for maintenance. Oil, tires, breaks all get done at Les Schwab.

I recently took my car in to have a 3 separate issues looked at. Cost me $300 plus for them to tell me what needed to be repaired and nothing else. It was only $300 because they didn’t charge for one of the items. So for $300 I got told what was wrong and how much it would cost to fix. None of the issues were needed repairs so I never got them fixed. One fixed itself before I even got to the dealer.

Yes I have a Cooper and the mechanic we used for probably 40 years who also dives a Cooper retired. We just bought a toyota for my wife ,bought the maintenance package so we'll be taking it to them till at least 75k miles..
