First loose change went. Then paper money went. Now credit cards are going, in favour of Apple Pay et al, all your accounts stored on your phone securely to be scanned like any other card. Who else doesn't bother to carry more than one emergency card around with them in favour of an iPhone or whatever?

No place I shop has ever refused to take my cash...............LOL. Don't see any reason to change. Apple just wants to get into the lucrative credit card fee business. Nothing wrong with that, but the way I currently use cash or credit cards isn't going to change for me. Have an android phone and don't think it is good idea to have one-stop shopping on your phone when you carry it around in public.

Did it? Some places may take card only, but I know places that take cash only.

There are several places that are NO CASH around me.

Also, Apple Pay isn't just with the Apple card. I have several cards in my wallet (plus Apple cash) that I can use to pay with. I do also carry ONE physical CC with me in case a place doesn't take Apple Pay.

Not an Apple guy. But I don't have payments linked to my phone or watch. I'm still slightly concerned about someone with nefarious intent getting too close to either and getting to my money. Probably not a valid concern, but still mine.

Also, depending on what the item is, what time of the month it is, and balance of the account, I use different accounts (banks) for different transactions. If I'm going to have to change accounts on phone/watch, I might as well pull out a specific card.

Not many of those around me, but if there was I would just use a credit card. Small purchases for me are way more convenient with cash so I continue to use both methods. I am not big on storing my credit cards online regardless of how 'safe' the application claims it is. Even when I use Amazon, I delete the stored credit card # once I have completed the purchase. They have NO reason to be storing that and why make it easier for some hacker to gather up such info?

I was specifically referring to your part of the post that said that no place has ever refused to take cash.

Well the OP seems to imply that cash is no longer accepted. Maybe they shop at places I don't. Very rarely have I seen a place that doesn't take cash when shopping in-person.

Here in the UK it is hard to pay in cash for everything. Places don't always accept it anymore, the costs and hassle of dealing with cash (banking etc) make it not worth it for every business.

I have moved to Apple Pay completely now, don't even take my physical cards out with me most of the time. Anywhere that takes contactless takes Apple Pay, and that's everywhere now here.

They want to make it "easier" for customers to purchase things. I definitely take advantage of it.

I am more likely to carry cash than my phone, if it comes right down to it. I don’t use Apple Pay. I only use credit cards for large purchases or internet purchases. I use cash almost 100% in my day to day transactions, as it prevents me from overspending while I look for work. Perhaps it is different where the OP lives, but I have not come across any company that would not accept cash and if I did, I probably wouldn’t patronize them. The company I used to work for tried to go cashless. It lasted about a month or so before they went back to accepting cash.

There are many people with low incomes here in the US who don’t have access to the same financial tools that most of us on the DIS would have access to. They go to a check cashing store to cash their paychecks and then use cash exclusively for their expenses. To go to a cashless society would mean they wouldn’t have access to necessary goods and services. I could see luxury companies going cashless, but not every day places like grocery stores, gas stations, etc.

I used to be really skeptical about apple pay, and all the other digital payment forms. But I drank the kool aide about a year or so ago and so far so good. Basically all it is is linking any existing credit card to your phone and then pay with your phone by tapping it at checkout. However, Sams club scan and go is the ultimate. Link your credit card on the sams club app, scan your purchases with your phone as you drop them in your cart. Pay for your purchases on the app as you exit the store. No waiting in checkout lines whatsoever. That is as good as it gets.

Cash is dying for sure.

It will linger on for years like satellite TV and landlines.

I use phone as a key for my car and Apple Pay when ever I can. I only carry my phone, no wallet, no keys.

I was disappointed to find out that the digital license I added to my phone is only valid for air travel and is not a replacement for my physical drivers license.

Talking Apple Pay specifically, not saved to payments on your browser. Your cards
aren’t saved online and their numbers are not stored to your device. The numbers for your card are not even used for transactions, it’s a unique token for that specific transaction so even if it were skimmed (which it can’t be because it doesn’t have a magnetic strip) or somehow copied by someone being too close it’s 100% useless because the token is ONLY for THAT transaction.

As far as someone getting their hands on your phone 2FA is required as is a passcode/face/print ID. No one is getting into my phone without my face or (long) passcode and if they manage to snatch it from me while it happens to be open for the one minute I have it set for they still need my code/face to actually use the cards. Someone can however run around willy nilly with your physical card for quite sometime before you know it’s happening and can shut it down.

I’m not trying to change anyone’s mind and if you’re not comfortable with it, you’re not comfortable with it. I just think some are misunderstanding how it actually works. It’s far more sophisticated than entering your card on a web browser or into a store’s app. Here is a good rundown.

To answer the question, I have all my cards in my Apple Wallet and carry my main credit card for just in case. It’s very rare I’m somewhere that does not take mobile pay. I can’t remember the last time I had to bust out a physical card.

To be honest, the only time I use cash is when overseas and when at my local pot shop (there is a surcharge to use debit cards at marijuana dispensaries). Other than that, it's all ApplePay.

Just to illustrate a point, the Royal Mint in the UK is considering two advances - first, the abolition of copper coins (so no more 1p and 2p coins, only 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p, £1 and £2 coins) and second, turning the entire currency into a digital media. The second is not set in stone by any means, but it is still serious. Ever since the birth of contactless cards, people have been fiddling around with change less and less - cards are just so much more convenient and you don't even need to remember your PIN number. Now Apple and her competitors have enabled contactless transactions on their phones for goodness' sake, on which you can store every card you own in a virtual "wallet", again making payments easier. And when it comes to online transactions, PayPal has made serious inroads, remembering cards and making secure transactions.

A few businesses around here this year put up signs that they no longer accept Apple Pay. No idea why.

See, here in the U.S. cash costs a merchant nothing. Credit cards however, do charge a fee of 3-4%. which more and more merchants here are adding onto you bill.

I ran into that in Monterey at a restaurant. They did a very good job of posting notice of that policy at the door and at the tables. Getting to be tough for the "unbanked" who have no bank accounts or credit cards.
