Apple Pay

See, here in the U.S. cash costs a merchant nothing.
The idea that accepting cash is cheap is actually a myth. While some business owners might think the 3 percent fee for processing credit cards is a burden, research from IHL Group shows that cash handling costs many retailers between 4.7 and 15.3 percent.

Merchants who think accepting cash is cheaper than credit are misinformed and living in the past.

Cash is dying for sure.

It will linger on for years like satellite TV and landlines.

I use phone as a key for my car and Apple Pay when ever I can. I only carry my phone, no wallet, no keys.

I was disappointed to find out that the digital license I added to my phone is only valid for air travel and is not a replacement for my physical drivers license.
I love using my Apple DL at the airport. Ideally, I will only need my phone in the future. It has my health records, drivers license, credit cards, and I can make calls on it! ;) Then when the time comes for my microchip to be activated I'll only need to transfer the data from my phone to me. lol

Well, as the lady that owns my favorite cheese shop is thinking of going cash only. She is paying $5,000 a month in credit card fees.
I just don't see the costs with cash. That article makes no sense. But it is from a bank, which makes nothing on cash business, and 3% on credit card sales so not sure they are unbiased.
I used to have to count out a cash drawer every night, took 5 minutes. Although most of the places I go to that are cash only are like the cheese store, and the local gourmet hamburger restaurant where the owner is the only one in the cash drawer, so there is tight control over who gets in the cash draw.

Here there aren't significant fees in relation to taking card payments. Cash costs money because it takes more employee time to cash up at the end of the day and get all the cash to a bank.

Banking here is a little different than in the USA though, for example we have free instant bank transfers etc so don't use apps like venmo etc and don't use cheques anymore.

Essentially I am not sure the situations are comparable but I would say that if you are travelling in the UK make sure you have a debit or credit card you can use in "no cash" places, especially in London.

where the owner is the only one in the cash drawer
That is one of the largest expenses of accepting cash.

The owner should be growing the business, not counting out the register, going to the bank to make deposits, going to the bank to get change, etc

Owners are the most expensive labor cost for a business and should be doing revenue increasing tasks.

I was going to use the laughing emoji but didn’t want it taken as snark. The microchip thing is funny. I make jokes about my microchip all the time. It makes people who actually believe that verrrrry uncomfortable. 😂

I can’t wait for digital driver’s licenses but as far as I can tell they’re not even on Nevada’s todo list. While Vegas is pretty up with the times, the rest of the state not so much.

Not sure what else the owners of the cheese store and the hamburger place would do to grow their business. Being at the checkstand they have personal contact with every paying customer and making sure they get the best service. But both of their business has succeeded on word of mouth from satisfied customers.

My daughter lived in Leeds for a year, and was just back in the U.K. in May. But she was in Edinburgh, and was surprised how many places still took cash. But that may be because if is a big tourist city. Have to be prepared for different methods of payments I guess if you run a business geared to tourists.
I know when she first moved there, she had some issues with her U.S. Chip credit card at some stores. Bank told her to have the merchant swipe the card instead. That worked, but she encountered a lot of clerks who even knew there was a swipe slot on their credit card machines!

Reminds of the continuing problems getting all states prepared to issue that Real ID for air travel. Some have been slow to implement and/or dragging their feet and the latest deadline has now been pushed back to 2025.

I don’t use Apple Pay or store any cards or tickets on it. You have to have a passcode enabled and the hill I am willing to die on is that passcodes are infuriating and I refuse to have it on my phone.

Why don't you want your phone protected with a passcode?

One of the downsides to cashless is if the point of sale system, card network, or internet goes down. Manually taking credit cards is a pain especially given that most cards don’t have embossed numbers so you can’t use the those old credit card imprinter devices. Cash is easiest in these situations.

Doesn't matter anyway. If you don't want PIN protection on your phone, you aren't press-ganged into it. I am happy enough to rely on facial-recognition, which locks my phone until I look into it. Very cool! And if that's not your cup of tea, fingerprint recognition is fast and secure too. No pain there :)

I don't use a PIN with my iPhone. Only the facial recognition, unless I need to use a PIN because my face doesn't work.

Yeah, I still don’t have one.

You leave any info you do have on the phone very vulnerable by not having one. No one thinks they’re going to lose their phone until they do. You could use an old phone number you had to remember as a kid that’s not connected to you personally. Something you auto remember but no one else would. If you use face or Touch ID you’d rarely have to use it.
Doesn't surprise me. Knowing Apple, they probably charge you for the pleasure of using your Apple Wallet.
They do not. If a place takes mobile payment they take Apple Pay. You’d be surprised the amount of places that have told me they don’t take Apple Pay but have a mobile reader. They’re pretty stunned when I hold my watch or phone near it and it goes right through.

My European friends are stunned by the way we pay for things here. There, most places take touchless whether it's ApplePay or tapping the physical card. At restaurants, servers NEVER take your card but bring the credit card reader to you and you tap. I always love that and wish that the culture was a bit different here.

Yeah, I think part of the problem is that a lot of people don’t understand it or don’t want to learn something new. Replacing the machines is a pretty penny as well. A lot of the conversations I’d had in the various threads on the subject here on the DIS I’ve had with my DH. What finally got him to (ask me) put Apple Pay on his phone is that when the guys at work pool together to buy lunch they want Apple Cash not physical cash. Not your wife diligently doing her homework and providing proof of its security, nope, peer pressure. 😂 It’s the only thing he uses it for though.

Apple Pay has saved my proverbial behind more than once. I go for a haircut, forget my cards/wallet or my PIN code and fix everything just by swiping my phone on the account I choose :)

My wife is one of the most diligent people I know and every so often even I will hear "you trust your colleagues but not your wife?! I may not have a doctorate but I told you this!!"

And so it goes.
