What would you have done?

I swear the Dis is an anomaly. I know no one in real life that still tests for Covid.

Does the CDC even recommend quarantine if you were exposed?

In my area of NJ life is back to normal. People don’t stay home with a mild cold or cough. No one wears masks. The C word is barely ever brought up. It’s business as usual.
It is an anomaly. It's a handful of posters that I call the echo chamber. They are in lockstep on every issue. I hadn't even thought about covid until I read this thread. I spent 4 weeks in Europe this Summer mostly on a cruise ship. I never saw a mask or anyone concerned about anything health related. People have moved on and are enjoying life again... as they should.

I live in NJ…and plenty of people I know still occasionally test for covid. Especially now with a lot of people sick.

It's interesting that Once Upon a Time likes every post. I'm curious what the motivation behind this thread was.

I just appreciate getting peoples’ feedback, even if I don’t totally agree with the person’s view. I felt torn on my choice, so I wanted to see what others had thought. As far as testing goes, people still test that I know if they are exposed or feeling sick. I feel better about my decision today, even though I feel bad I missed my close friend’s birthday, I’m glad I didn’t take any chances.

I would have gone to the party. All of your friends were ok with it, you were not symptomatic and you tested negative. That being said, don’t second guess your decision because that was what felt right to you. I would have felt comfortable going but you didn’t and that’s OK!

Thank you. I appreciate people’s feedback! I felt like maybe I overreacted in my decision, but I don’t regret it now.

For a long time, Covid discussions weren't allowed on this forum. It seemed a little bit odd.

Oh that’s something I didn’t know, just wanted to get peoples’ feedback as I was feeling torn on the situation. If it is an issue it can be removed of course! So sorry to the mods!

Just a word about what we are seeing in the hospital these days.

A spike in Covid cases among patients and staff.

Visitors bringing Covid in to patients, who then have to remain on isolation due to a known exposure. That makes it extra hard on hospitalized patients, just fyi.

People need to use common sense, still. If unwell, do us all a favor and try not to infect the rest of us. Please!
My sister is a hospital nurse. She said there has been an outbreak at a local nursing home and they can’t send people there right now. My brother contracted Covid for the first time a couple weeks ago. He literally goes nowhere except the grocery. His train wreck of a wife didn’t get it.

I started a new job at our local hospital network. There are a number of patients with Covid that I’ve seen. I have had it twice. I’d rather not have it again.

As far as testing, we test for flu, strep, etc. why? So we can receive proper treatment and hopefully keep from infecting others.

Or maybe they just like wearing a mask. Some people can’t give it up.

i know several people who will likely never go back to not wearing masks, at least during flu season and other periods of time they historicaly were prone to annual bouts of head colds and brochitis. maybe it was the hand sanitizing, maybe it was the social distancing, maybe it was the masks but they've been healthier in years since the onset of the pandemic. same with some teachers-their schools have abandoned the mandates but allows anyone who desires to wear them to do so which they choose to do and report catching far fewer colds and viruses.

to each their own.

My co-worker has it for the first time too and is really sick. Seems to be getting people who haven’t had it.

Wow you put a lot of thought into why someone might be wearing a mask. People are free to wear whatever they want to wear. I’m free to think whatever I want to think about what they’re wearing. It’s all good.

Being able to think about and consider other's situations & feelings is called empathy. Some have it more than others. It's likely she didn't really spend more than a few seconds to think about why someone might wear a mask, so I wouldn't stress too much about it. If you think it would take you a lot of thought to come up with those few reasons for someone wearing a mask, it may just mean you are somewhere different on the empathy scale. It's all good though, the world would be a boring place if everyone were the same!

Glad to hear you're good with people who at times still wear masks for whatever reason, because it kind of seems like it upsets you. It's definitely not worth being stressed about if some random other person feels it's in their best medical interest to wear a mask at times!

I did one yesterday. Had some symptoms. Turned out negative for COVID.
I tested myself yesterday also, been coughing and feeling tired. It was negative but I wouldn't have gone out in public if it had been positive. We are seeing an uptick in cases around here and I'm seeing more masks at the stores.

Yeah… there’s a big difference between being exposed and then going into public, vs testing positive then going into public.
I feel many here are treating them equal.

There's also a difference in being exposed and going into public - meaning getting some groceries or picking up some books from the library vs. being exposed and then going into public - meaning getting together with a group of friends in someone's home for several hours.

In one case you're in a large space for a shorter time with very limited close contact to anyone, and in the other case you're in close proximity in a small space for a long time.

For me personally, if I had some casual exposure, but am feeling great, I'm not going to think twice about running in to get groceries somewhere. But I am going to think twice about getting together with immune compromised family members in an indoor setting, and if I had something like that planned with them, I would likely push it out a few days to get past the incubation period.

There comes a point at which this is just normal. You do realize that the annual flu is really just a variant of the Spanish Flu, right? It mutates a bit each year, some people get the updated vaccine, a lot of people don't, some people get sick and yes, some people die - but most of us don't. We don't mask/test/shut down schools, businesses, beaches and parks over it - we just, move on. COVID has to be handled the same way at some point - why not now?

I think it's still "becoming normal". You cited the Spanish Flu, also known as the 1918 Flu, so we know a heck of a lot more about it than we do SARS COV2, or Covid-19....from 2019. People can have lingering issues from influenza and say, viral pneumonia, but the low estimate of people with Long Covid is around 10%....high estimates are at 20%. I myself still have lingering tinnitus, but thankfully it's so much better than when it was peaking. So, there's still a lot to understand about the virus. Scientists still have very, very little understanding of Long Covid.

But have we "moved on" as a society....yes, we have by and large. We've also learned a lot during this time, and one of those lessons was that testing is highly accurate, easy and fairly inexpensive. Nothing is being shut down anymore....the worst I can see is healthcare facilities limiting visitors or requiring masks during outbreaks. I guess I just see it as my personal responsibility not to infect people when I can easily take a few steps to avoid that.

I would likely push it out a few days to get past the incubation period.
To follow CDC guidelines you would need to push it out 10 days. And for those 10 days wear an N95 mask, not a procedure mask, not a homemade mask, but an N95 mask for the entire 10 day period.

Would any of the people who said they would not have gone follow the CDC guidance?

I think the CDC guidelines have changed a bit since then haven't they?

And, I think the issue for me anyway, is that the OP was exposed to someone on Friday night (for an extended period indoors)...who tested positive on Sunday morning and was very sick. So that person was clearly infectious on Friday night. The OP had an event that day, tested negative, but still opted not to go. She could have been too early in the incubation period to test positive. As long as she continued to feel well, she didn't have covid, and wouldn't need to isolate.

When we got Covid, my husband got sick first and I started to feel the tickle in my throat two days later, and it wasn't for another couple of days when my symptoms worsened that I tested positive. I did test positive right away with a throat swab, but our CDC doesn't accept those results....as I believe other countries did back then.
