(No politics!!) how impacted will Guardians in Epcot be now?

My question: why is this sort of "humor" okay in movies, or as stand up comedy, but as soon as it's said outside of that context, it's no longer okay? So many comedy movies and stand up comedians with degrading, offensive comments and no one bats an eye. They applaud it, laugh and eat it up. But as soon as the same thing is tweeted or posted on Facebook... Well OMG what a horrible human being. The hypocrisy and double standards...

To be honest, I'm hoping him getting fired DOES impact the story for the ride and upcoming films. My husband and I were wanting to watch the 2nd film with some of our older kids and previewed it first. We were really shocked by the amount of sexual innuendos and explicit jokes in the movie. And was it really necessary to show a hundred sculptures of all the ways his dad procreated with aliens? Definitely not family friendly in any way, or what I would consider "Classic Disney."

Obviously, you would hope that if they're basing a ride off of the movies, they would leave that type of stuff out of the ride. Still, so many parents would want to watch the movies with their kids before going to the parks to ride it. So, a change in leadership to some one a bit more clean in their sense of humour is totally fine with me...

I whole-heartedly agree with your first paragraph. We were not prepared AT ALL for all the sexual innuendo. First movie was great family fun; second movie, not so much. But, I’ll take responsibility for letting my guard down, and not previewing again.

I completely respect the viewpoint on the content and totally get it but even with the issues the MPAA can have they do give descriptive detail (more than they used to).

For Guardians of the Galaxy it was rated PG-13 with the following description for why: Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi violence and action, and for some language

For Guardians of the Galaxy 2 (edited: added the number) it was rated PG-13 with the following description for why: Rated PG-13 for sequences of sci-fi action and violence, language, and brief suggestive content

As for the question of why add in suggestive humor..IDK.

But without a doubt Marvel is not nor do I believe has ever intended to be 'classic Disney'. Marvel def. is an adult feel for me with Deadpool being the most adult content. And honestly, I think that's ok.

The people attending those shows or watching those movies may be fine with it. That doesn't mean that others are. You then take it out of a setting where people have chosen to attend to hear those types of jokes and put it into a public forum where anyone, not only those who may be fine with it, are subjected to those same thoughts, there will be a different reaction.

I'm not fine with people ever 'joking' about pedophilia. I don't care if it's a comedian or whomever. Those comedians are also working for themselves or companies that are ok with their humour....when you work for a company that does not follow those same thoughts then expect a different reaction.

I don't think the attraction will be adjusted nor impacted. The person involved in this is a director of a movie series. He is not a character in the comics nor did he portray one in the movies. And in all honesty I don't think the general public, especially when it opens IMO since that is down the line, will even think about a connection between this and the ride. People on this Board involved in certain forums? Yeah they may but the general public likely not.

Only thing I could see is IF they were including his name somewhere on the attraction and I don't know that they were thinking anything remotely like that.

And in this case he was using it as humor and was associated with other “edgy” comedians and stuff

I think context has a lot to do with things - I mean, the same types of things have been one South Park, but as that is satire it *feels* a bit different that they way Gunn stated things

But I do think we are at an interesting time for comedy and assessing what comedy is and how jokes can compartmentaize a situation - but isn’t always the full story etc

I also think it is just so against the Disney brand and alsoncoming on the heels of the Lasseter situation they had almost no choice. In a different situation / different maybe he isn’t fired

I can’t even think of any comedians or movies that joke about the stuff that he did these days. People don’t stand for it...look at the Daniel Tosh incident from a few years ago for example. Maybe I am out of the loop and there is a weird underground culture of shock comedians that I am unaware of, but the most popular comedians out there now do not joke about this stuff so people definitely aren’t eating it up. I don’t think a shock comic has been popular since that Andrew Dice Clay guy.

This excuse annoys the crap out of me. Of course the person getting canned for saying horrible things is going to try to play the “I was just trying to be edgy!” card. And maybe if he was 15 at the time he said it, it would hold some weight. But he wasn’t 15...he was in his 40s, which is old enough to know better.

But comedy has always pushed boundaries - part of it often times is to make people uncomfortable

Just off the top of my head George Carlin had a rape joke as part of his standard set and there have been things as bad or even worse on South Park.

Could not disagree more with this post.

Guardians (both) are great movies, very funny and part of the Marvel Universe, not Classic Disney. Not every movie needs to be family friendly and definitely no need to change it to make it family friendly as obviously it is a wildly successful series.

To answer question - I don't think the ride will be affected at all.
Sadly, I think the next movie will be. He wrote the dialogue, which was the best part of the movies in my opinion. I'm super bummed about this as this series was my favorite of the entire Marvel Universe.

I hate Twitter!!! :)

George Carlin has been dead for years tho lol. Are we really going to give weirdos like this Gunn guy a pass because someone back in the 70s or whatever said something similar? Just because you and the OP are okay with that type of stuff doesn’t mean the general population is okay with it nowadays.

And yes, comedy has always pushed boundaries but what he tweeted wasn’t comedy...it was a grown man being gross and trying to offend people. Well, mission accomplished I guess lol

I never said I am ok with it - I think it was disgusting and horrible and Diseny was right for firing him

I think the larger question about “what can comedy be?” is an interesting one. And what form can it take? Can twitter be used or is only standup or tv/film ok? What is ok? Who decides? When it is something that often is about making people uncomfortable I think it is an interesting discussion - but more in a larger/philosophical sense

Twitter can absolutely be used for comedy. But if the director of Scooby Doo tweeting about raping kids is someone’s idea of comedy, then I don’t really see any chance of having any type of philosophical discussion lol

He only wrote it, didn’t direct it. Maybe you can’t have a philosophical discussion if you don’t care to do proper research for facts. Which again is what I wanted to prevent with this thread. I hope the mods lock it especially seeing my question was answered

lol my apologies for getting the writer/director of Scooby Doo mixed up :rolleyes2 I am not quite sure how that changes the situation, but okay.

It purely depends on the audience. For me, personally, I'm not a big fan of lazy provocateurs and people who punch down. I'm just not that target audience regardless of the medium. But I'm sure there's plenty of people who are and defend it. They're the ones watching that stuff, reading the book, liking the tweets. Like I said in the news thread people are gonna put out there what they think is funny or entertaining to them but don't be surprised if it effects you down the road. Disney absolutely needs to do a better job about vetting people and cleaning up their social media if they're gonna fire them for this stuff. Don't let it happen in the first place, it's embarrassing for a company of their size and influence.

This is the question I was really getting at. I mean, let's look at racial slurs and stereotypes. If a star tweeted something racial, there would definitely be a backlash. And yet then we have movies like A Million Ways to Die in the West.

That’s a very good point. I think maybe people see it as the character the actor is playing is saying those things for the movie, whereas when celebrities say idiotic things on Twitter, they are coming straight from the celebrity, if that makes any sense.

It does. It seems as though it's the "fictional character" vs "real person" factor.
