I wouldn’t start one for myself. I have donated to some GFM and Kickstarter campaigns.
They were for a business venture (a toy), an indie movie, an impoverished foreign student coming to study engineering at MIT or somewhere equally wonderful- some local students set it up to help pay some of his costs. That one was neat because he would send updates about his journey and settling into school.
Things I’ve given to were causes I believed in and items I would use.
A more recent trend that is more common and not as welcome is the FB charities thing where your friends set up a donation drive for their BD or other event. The idea behind it - encouraging people to give, and people you know/don’t know so well giving thought to animal shelters in some distant land is really kind, but I am over it already.
