Hungry Are The Damned! 10/15/07-10/25/07 - COMPLETED W/LOTS OF PICS!!!

Clicked on the link based on the title alone--so thrilled that it's another one of YOUR dining reports! Don't take this the wrong way, but I still chuckle every now and then thinking of you crying at Artist Point. Mind you, I'm laughing with you, not at you--girlfriend, I have so been there.

Keep it coming!

I missed this in my past trippiy readings:confused: could you point me in the right direction? Im still on memories of the last trippy and am wondering if Grimace makes an appearance and how is Plankton these days?

Now you all have it mixed up!!! French fries MUST be dipped in a chocolate malt, shake, or some form of melty chocolate ice cream goodness. It is the only way I can handle the trips to Wendy's - fries dipped in a chocolate frosty.:goodvibes

I have to agree, our last trip to the Beach Club's visit to Beaches and Cream was Heavenly. The No Way Jose was yummy and the sundae my DS had with oreos for ears - I don't know what exactly it was (not the ones pictured here). It was as big as the No Way Jose.

Keep 'em comin...I'm getting hungrier by the minute!

No, no, no, you are supposed to eat onion rings with your ice cream. Didn't you know???? :yay: That is the best possible combo of sweet and salty.

Now lets all continue to pour love and affection on Brenda until she decides to post more food porn. Soon please!:flower3:

Monday, October 15th - A Little Bit of Food and Wine ... A Whole Lotta Fish and Booze

I'll spare you the details of our afternoon ... if you really want to read about how we ran into BriarRosie (Hi Lori!), fell alseep in our room and missed DisneyDuet and her hubby (please forgive us :flower3: ), and then wandered over to Epcot to check out the Festival Welcome Center, look for our newest unwritten trip report: Gastronomy Interrupted - We Blame Norway and So Should You.

Anyway ... it had to be about 6PM by the time we left the villa and headed over to Epcot. I was eager to see the new welcome center for this year's Festival and I wanted to begin scoping out stuff to buy right away. Had I been more smart I would have actually purchased those things when I found them rather than waiting ... but I'm not always the sharpest tool in the shed. Learn from my hard-knock lesson: if you see a shirt you want in your size buy it... immediately. If you find a bottle of Sam Adams Utopias snatch it up and run gleefully around the welcome center screaming, "I GOT IT!!!" at the top of your lungs.

Never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever assume that it will still be waiting forlornly for you to come back and whip out your credit card on the morrow.

Ahem, where was I?

Here's Jay and me all nice and refreshed before leaving in search of food and booze:

We want Fugu!!!
24.jpg

If I may return to the Festival Welcome Center for a moment, we really liked the new location. It was much more spacious and easier to move around in than in past years when it was located over in a portion of Innoventions West. We also liked the fact that people waiting in line for wine seminars could do so in air conditioned comfort, which was a big deal this year because the Florida weather was still so hot for the middle of October.

We ended up buying a bottle of Fairy Tale Cuvee for my birthday on Wednesday and then ventured out into the World Showcase to "get the lay of the land." We were both pretty hungry and decided to stop in Mexico for a snack.

Chilaquiles
25.jpg

Quesadilla con Chorizo with some Dos Equis Beer
26.jpg

The quesadilla was a tasty, good-sized portion but it was comprised primarily of cheese. I'm taking it on faith that those little chewy portions I stumbled across now and then were actually chorizo and not something else that I'd be happier not knowing about. I think that this was a better offering in years past when it included chicken as well as chorizo.

Please note: we ordered the 6-ounce serving of Dos Equis but had some good beverage-karma working for us and were given a 12-ounce serving by mistake. I tried to give it back and the CM behind the counter just told me to keep it. Hey, don't tell me twice to keep the extra beer and I'm taking it on faith that no one hawked a throat rocket into this baby just before you offered it to us.

As for the chilaquiles ... I wasn't even sure what they were supposed to be. Jason took a bite and pronounced them, "Mmmmmmmmm." He then held out a "safe" forkful for me to try... safe meaning no strange colored sauce or shaving cream (because that's what the little dollop on the top looked like). It wasn't bad, but perhaps a bit spicier than I like my food to be. I checked the Festival cookbook and these chilaquiles were baked tortillas with chicken and cheese covered in a jalapeno pepper sauce and topped with sour cream (still looks like shaving cream to me).

At this point, Jay and I decided that we would be daring for dinner and try some sushi. This came about because the folks at Epcot couldn't seem to figure out whether or not the restaurant remodel in Japan would be completed by the time the F&W Festival started. We tried, on numerous occasions, to book the sushi / sake pairings being offered as part of the Festival's special programming. After the 15th phone call and the 15th different answer I decided to wash my hands of this event.

Kimonos, located at the Swan, had received high marks from many DISers whose opinions can usually be relied upon. Jay and I decided that we would just go there and make up our own sushi / sake pairing while still spending less money than Epcot would have charged us.

We didn't take any pictures of the lounge because it was pretty dim and we didn't want to disturb anyone - the place was surprisingly crowded but there was no karaoke. Our waitress informed us that it wouldn't start until 9:30PM that evening and we knew, having been up since 3AM CST, that there was no way we were going to be able to hang around for any of that fun.

We were also disappointed by the lack of a sake sampler / flight. It turns out there was no sake sampler, which I had been led to believe from the menu I printed out from Kimonos website over the summer.

Fine.

We just won't have any sake.

Instead I ordered something called Tokyo Ginger Tea

I don't taste any T, but I sure taste the G-I-N
29.jpg

The drink was described as such: Tangueray Gin and Darjeeling Tea shaken with mint and ginger honey. It kind of grew on me during the course of the evening as the melting ice cubes diluted the taste of the Gin, but I wasn't able to finish it. I'm not a huge fan of mint unless it's really subtle and I don't care much for ginger at all. In retrospect I should have ordered something else entirely but I was in "trying new stuff" mode.

Jay plays it safe with Kirin Itchy-Bunny Beer

We really liked Kimono's atmosphere and decor and thought our waitress was very helpful and professional. She explained the difference between sashimi and nigiri, which I've totally forgotten, and also explained how we should go about ordering. She left a menu with us, and we simply marked off the items and number of servings we wanted.

And by the Sacred Parchment, I swear that if I reveal the secrets of the StoneCutters, may my stomach become bloated and my head be plucked of all but three hairs...
28.jpg

So... what do you order when you're a sushi virgin and you have a temperamental digestive system?

That's a great question.

The answer: Let the husband choose because he's probably going to end up eating most of it anyway. :lmao:

We actually chose five different items, thinking that it would give us a nice cross-section of sushi to sample. Some of our choices came with 5-6 pieces while others came with only two - either way it ended up being a lot of food...for Jay to eat. ;)

Bagel Roll (salmon, cream cheese & cucumber)
Spider Roll (crisp soft shell crab)
Jalepeno Roll (spicy tuna & yellow tail)
Shrimp Roll (nigiri)
Tuna Roll (sashimi)

We took two pictures to better show the sushi from both sides. It's a lovely presentation ... absolutely gorgeous.

In the fore-front of this first shot you'll see the Shrimp roll on the bottom left-hand corner and the Tuna roll and Bagel roll from left to right across the bottom of the plate. The Spider roll is nestled in the middle of the plate with a few more pieces of the Bagel roll and the Jalepeno roll is the lined up along the back of the plate. The second picture is the plate flipped so that the Jalepeno roll is in the front.

32.jpg

I tried each one of these items and I can tell you right now that it's going to take some time for sushi to grow on me. I didn't like the seaweed and had real concerns about how it would impact my stomach / intestinal tract so I ended up eating around it. And some of the tuna was a little too strong for my taste (I guess I've been eating Starkist and Bumblebee for too many years). Jay really liked everything and would definitely go back for another meal. He was disappointed that Fugu (Japanese pufferfish) wasn't on the menu only because he wanted to yell, "Fugu me!" ala' Homer Simpson.

We did still have a lot of fun throughout the course of the evening by saying simultaneously, "Poison, poison, poison ... tasty fish!" :rotfl2:

All joking aside for a moment, I would highly recommend Kimonos to anyone out there who has a love of sushi - the menu is extensive and the food is quite good (even I can acknowledge that it was good even if I wasn't crazy about it). We found the service to be top notch and really enjoyed trying something new and scary for dinner. The next time we're at WDW we may very well go back again and this time ... we might even order the squid platter.

Thanks for reading! :goodvibes

Can't wait for more reviews, It good so far. You have a really good sense of humor.

Thanks so much - I'm glad you enjoy our silly sense of humor. I must warn you ... it will only get sillier as this thread progresses. :goodvibes

I am so in!! I'm a long time lurker and fan of your previous dining reports. Looking forward to your great reviews. We are going in December for Christmas, staying at the Yacht Club and hoping to go to Beaches and Cream. Looks so good.

Thanks for reading and posting! You will have a great trip ... I hope you come back and tell us all about it (and don't forget the pictures of ice cream).

Funny you should say that.....

DH just mentioned this weekend that we should take all the kids to Universal instead of on a cruise next June. So now I am trying to plan a trip to Universal for myself, DH, a 5 yr old DS, a 15 yr old DSS and an 18 yr old DSD. Maybe we can meet! I'll be the one carrying a margarita around.....

Hmmmmm....any chance you might go in October? My nephew is getting married in June so I know there will be no vacation for us then, but we liked the idea of getting back to Halloween Horror Nights next year (scary!).

BTW - which margarita will you be carrying? I'm partial to the Last Mango in Paris, myself. :thumbsup2

Yay!!! Another Brenda food porn report!!! :cheer2:

I just celebrated my birthday Thursday at the California Grill. I loves me some Valrohna Chocolate Cake!!!! Aren't we lucky to be born during the Food and Wine Festival????? :cool1:

Jill in KC

Hi Jill; happy belated birthday to you! I'm in total agreement - can't beat being an October baby in a food and wine world! ;)

Thanks for reading!

Hi Brenda I've read your other reports and loved them! Can't wait to read this one.

Thanks so much for reading - hope you enjoy this last food ride with us. :goodvibes

Thanks...I think. ;)

Honestly, I'd almost purged the memory of Artist's Point ... almost. :rotfl2: You will be relieved to know that there was no hormonal / health related melt-down on this trip.

Thanks for reading!

I missed this in my past trippiy readings:confused: could you point me in the right direction? Im still on memories of the last trippy and am wondering if Grimace makes an appearance and how is Plankton these days?

If you really want to read something that will make you cringe, the Artist Point incident is in The Food was not Undelicious from this past May. I'm not proud ... :sad2:

No Grimace in that food report or in this one, but Plankton will make an appearance in everything. He's been a busy little bugger, thanks for asking.

Jumping on board for another entertaining thread by Brenda and Jay :cool1:

... can't believe it's already up to 5 pages!!!:thumbsup2

Hi there - it's great to see you again! Thanks so much for joining in with us once more. When I have a chance I need to check out your new trip report - I'm really curious to read what you have to say about Halloween Horror Nights.

I know ... five pages ... Jay just shakes his head. :rotfl:

Wow - the sushi looks amazing! I will definitely be adding Kimonos for next October's trip....yes, I'm already planning. ;)

Great installment! :thumbsup2

Hi everybody! :goodvibes

I'd like to say welcome back to those of you who may be old friends jumping on board for our final food report of the year (or next year for that matter)

Hey! that's me! Looking forward to it. ::yes:: ::yes:: ::yes::

Hope you're not SERIOUS about next year ::scared:: Say you'll be back!

Glad to see you both again :)

P.S. Business question... re: the no way jose - I'm a fan of the Baskin robbins PB and Choc ice cream. The PB is a sweet frozen wafery slab of peaunut butter. I don't like peanut butter that tastes as though it came out of a jar stirred in (too creamy, too real). What's this one like?

ahhhh Brenda's back. missed you sweetie ! Can't wait for the rest of the reports! :thumbsup2

Oooh, that sushi looks so delicious! Unfortunately though, Kimonos is one restaurant that won't be on our list for our next trip :sad2: David, my DH, is allergic to fish, so although I really enjoy sushi we can't eat there. Oh well, I'll just have to make do with looking at your pics instead!

BTW, do you really imagine that we ate a dinner for two at Spoodles and didn't order a jug of Sangria to wash it down? :rotfl2:

Haven't even read any of this yet, but wanted to get on board.
I can't believe you started a report already. Wow!

I also had to say, as far as cultural references go, I like the title because I actually saw that episode! :rotfl:

Just the thought of eating sushi makes me lose a pound or two and yes, I do know that it is not raw fish. :rotfl2:

I am a constant dieter and foodaholic and have found that I can watch Food Network shows and look at the Food Porn thread for hours and not want to eat anything. Odd, very odd. :confused3

SG/Linda (who is going to start carrying pics of sushi in her purse to kill her appetite)

Well Howdy!
My favorite Jewish Russian Ballerina!;)
I will be hoisting a cider to you when DH and I are at Raglin Road in 28 days.
You have the BEST food reviews and pics are great.
Thanks. :wizard: :)

SUSHI!

in the last couple of years, my much more daring DH has introduced me to sushi and I have to admit it has grown on me. (no pun intended...)

Glad you gave it a go!

Look forward to more.

Ms. H

Ms. Heimlich, I hereby grant you all of my lifetime share of sushi and I will take your allotment of chocolate. Seems fair to me!1 :lmao:

SG/Linda

Ok, I am WAAAAAAAY behind, but I thought I'd jump in with some thoughts. It's easier and faster than working on my reports. :rolleyes1

Monday, October 15th - Let us Celebrate Vacation with the Joining of Chocolate to Peanut Butter

Hey, your chocolate's in my peanut butter. Hey, your peanut butter's on my chocolate. Mmmmmm....
Man, am I dating myself that I remember the FIRST Reese's commercials???

I'm so hungry I could eat at Arby's ...

:lmao: Now that's saying something!

**Brenda's Dining Tip #68: Dip your fries in cheap yellow mustard instead of catsup / ketchup. It's like eating a glob of sunshine with every mouthful.**

Eeeeeeew! "A glob of sunshine with every mouthful"??? Where did that come from? Who replaced my drink with Pollyanna Punch?

I say EEEEEEEWWW, but because of the content, not the sentiment. But my dd13 says to tell Mrs. Brenda she concurs. :thumbsup2 Or try mayo. She and ketchup -- not so much friends.

And now, the close-up you've all been waiting for...The International Ice Cream Association's Centerfold for the month of October:

Our waitress noticed that I was taking pictures of food and asked if we wanted to have our picture taken with the dessert before we destroyed it. :lmao:

Dessert cleavage ... I swear it's unintentional
17.jpg

:scared1: Good Lord, that sundae is as BIG as your head! Run away, run away!

[Tee hee on the centerfold bit.
I frequent "that" food pic thread here on the DIS.
My friends think its hilarious that I would rather look at pics of food rather than the racy stuff.]

What can I tell you about this dessert? It's superb. The peanut butter topping is creamy and rich while the hot fudge is thick and chocolatey - it's like eating a melted Reese's Peanut Butter Cup with ice cream. I think if I had a single suggestion to make it would be that the dessert be served entirely with vanilla ice cream rather than with chocolate and vanilla. I found that the vanilla ice cream complemented the other two flavors much better than the chocolate ice cream, which seemed to be warring with the hot fudge. But despite that, this remains hands-down the best ice cream dessert we've had on WDW property. If you like peanut butter and chocolate this is the choice for you!

Even having never had the sundae, I would have to agree. This may be a case where too much chocolate is NOT a good thing. Vanilla would off-set the saltiness of the pb better.

Got to go read more!

YAY!!!! i didn't even see this till right now, so i have not read anything yet..however i just wanted to say THANK YOU for what i know will be amazing reviews..woohoo!:cool1:
Cancel that, i have now read the begining of this adventure..BRAVA'!! That sush looks DELICIOUS!!! mmmm ..and i Love the stonecutters reference..such a great episode!

Ok, I have a confession to make...

I was disapointed by the No way Jose :scared1:

I don't understand what I did wrong, I love peanut butter, fudge, chocolate and vanilla ice cream as well as whipped cream...

I think people might want to ban me from the DIS
