However, if you need a chauffer for the married couple, a driver for the funeral hearse, or an ambulance driver to get you to the Emergency Room quickly, I'm your guy.

Welcome back to the profession!

I was an ED and ICU nurse before I went into administration. I have a friend in Knoxville that owns an embalming, transport and crematory service. We used to compare notes and comment that we were in the same business. He was just a little further down the line than I was.

Dark humor in the medical professions.

It was tough to let my license expire after I retired. Our training coordinator even asked if I wanted to be made aware of training events for continuing education. I passed, 25 yrs was enough.

One Christmas in the ER we received a large box of chocolates from the local funeral home thanking us for our great work. We were not sure how to interpret that.
Also at one time in our neighboring town the ambulance service was owned by the local funeral home. Jokes were often made about conflict of interest.

I have heard the comment you kill them, we chill them. I know this isn't funny. What started this was a nursing home was built next door to the funeral home.

Acknowledging that it seems distasteful, but dark humor is part of the coping mechanism for jobs like this. There is a weight to it that no one outside can really understand.

Its important to not say the quiet words out loud though
