junk e-mail, would someone tell these people

Let's try this reply again (darn server).

I read a report in the past week that predicts that email will become virtually useless by 2004 due to all the spam and spam blockers out there. Our company recently banned access to all external mail programs for fear of infecting the company intranet from an "uncontrolled" email source. I recently abandoned an email address that I had been using for over 5 years. In the past year, I switched to a cable modem, so I didn't use the old account for anything but a backup internet connection. I was getting an average of 20 junk emails a day on this inactive account. No matter how you slice it, that's a LOT of spam.

I don't know what irks me more. Junk email, junk mail, or junk phone calls.

What, Jason?? So - all of those "magic pills" cured you of your ailments and restored you to your glory days of youthful good looks and vigor??;)

Maybe you can be featured in some of those infomercials!!;)
Ahhhh..... buddy - I'm just messing with ya, doncha know!!:p

I probably get 50 a day to my yahoo box I use the most.

Thankfully they have a bulk folder and I just delete everything in it.

I'm not sure how much signing up for the DMA's email list would help at this point. It will stop major companies but I don't think many spammers worry about keeping their customers happy. My company uses the DMA list and based on response time I don't think they are getting very many hits.

Junk phone calls. They always call me when I'm home alone and I'm in the shower. I think the police are calling me to tell me my SO and my kids were in a wreck EVERY time that happens. How do they know I'm in the shower? And alone?

I've tried to get on the GA no call list a couple of times. It's not an easy list to get on. I'll check out that site and see if they've made it easier. Thanks Janette.:D

Tonight I had 24 spam e-mails and 3 legitimate e-mails and unfortunately that's about normal. What I really hate are some of the titles from the porn creeps. They aren't exactly polite.

E-mail is wonderful and I hate the way that spam has taken over. Will we have to go back to using phones?

By the way Shannon, I've had so many offers for various "enhancers" that I could set records if only a few of them worked. :p It's hard to believe that people must truly fall for this stuff.

I get like 50 or so a day..they are SOOOO annoying!

I try to unscribe and block as many as I can but they just keep coming!

When I posted the DMA website, I thought the email was mainly for snail mail. Sorry! You can have your email address flagged so you do not receive email's from respectable companies who are members of the DMA. It will not protect you from "spam". Spam to me is when someone retains your email address without your permission. And the porn crap. If you do "opt in" to any website, your email address MAY be rented or exchanged with other respectable offers. Also note that if you buy from catalogs - you have the option ( usually on the order form ) to "opt out". this will tell the cataloger to flag your name so it's not rented. ;)

Some things never change...still getting lots of spam mail...

I spent hours trying to opt out as well, but am now I afraid that I may have told them they have a "live" address instead.

I was about to send a :wave2: to cotye....then I clicked his profile to see when his last post was. It was months ago, October 2003! I looked again at the date of his post - June of 2002!

I scrolled ahead to the last page and read Robinrs's post about a throwback in time. Until I read it, I hadn't picked up on "JasonLyons". Who's that  . :teeth:

Isn't it amazing that in nearly two years, some things haven't changed? And now not only is spam email a problem, so is spyware. I don't know how much longer I can take it.:hyper: :faint: :scared1:

That's exactly what you did. I spent hours one day responding back with "remove me" and opting out and my spam email tripled.

I was getting between 50 and 60 spam emails a day, and then I set up my "Spaminator" through my ISP (I use Earthlink). Now, I only get emails from those in my address book, and I get notified once a week about all the mail that's in my "Spam" folder through webmail. I can still access the mail through webmail and choose to add the person to my address book from there. It was much less work to set up my address book online than deleting all that spam.

Check to see if your ISP has this feature. Unwanted senders actually get an auto-response that indicates that they're denied access to my in-box. As a result, even the spam I still get on my webmail has been greatly decreased. It's been a real blessing for me!
