I thought I would share our adult only trip to Venice with you. OKAY, so it's not disney, but they do have a disney store so it kind of counts.!!!
DH has been promising me a trip to Venice since we have been together. He has been many time with his folks as his parents would drive there from Germany, when they were posted, so he spend much of his youth hanging around the canals and beaches of the Lido.
Last year I decided that the kids were old enough to spend a few nights with the wrinklies whilst we had a grown up trip away. I got onto the internet and boked up most of the trip in one afternoon, and wanting to keep down the costs managed to do flights, hotel on the lido for 3 nights, insurance and airport parking for less than £350.00
so we were all set to board easy jet from east midlands airport on 28th October 2008. Flight was uneventful and we arrived at Marco polo airport around teatime 2 hours later. We did get an amazing view of venice from the air as we came into land
We purchased our 'Venice card' tickets whilst in the airport and made our way over to the water transfer area. Pretty soon we were on the water heading to the lido - this took about an hour. I must tell you that I get sea sick , short journeys are ok-ish and it has to be a mill pond for me to be okay. this transfer by boat was ok but later on I was to suffer horribly...
we got off the boat and headed off in the direction of our hotel. It was dark and raining and not a single person about I was getting a little fed up by this point. we searched for our hotel and eventually found it. After unpacking we headed back into the main lido area for a meal . We both had pizza and a carafe or 2 of wine! and I felt much better
It wasn't until the next morning that we were able to take some picces:
We got ready for the day and headed to the restaurant for the continental breakfast. After filling ourselves up, we walked to the water bus stop and boarded. the transport through out venice is efficient and frequent. We approached venice and got off at Piazza San Marco.
After wandering around we realized that the water level was rising and the raised boards were being laid out. within a short space of time the square was flooded and everyone had to walk on the raised boards. A police woman kept blowing her whistle and shouting at tourists to keep moving, as eveyone kept stopping to take pictures she was getting so cross! we thought this was hilarious
we had a good wander around and got some piccies of the Bacilica di san Marco and the doge's Palace
We headed up to the top of the Campenile for some amazing views.
we then headed of into the little streets. we tried to use a map to locate the major tourist attractions. I had a hit list of the things iIwanted to see, but it was a complete waste of time, we just kept going back on ourselves. It is just better to wander along and head in the vague direction of what you want to see and enjoy the things that appear around each corner
I can honestly say that i have never done so much walking in my entire lifeBy the end of the day we were both totally shattered and I got to the point that I was struggling to put one foot in front of the other!
we hearded back to our hotel to freshen up for the evening and headed into the main Lido area at night. What is so fab is that the italians seem to have a break mid-afternoon and out come the ice-creams!. everywhere you go mid-afternoon you are surrounded by every flavour and colour of ice-cream - heaven! Later on in the evening this turms into little petit-four type cakes and sweet pastries.
