I'm sure there are others that are more informed about Priceline but here goes.
Priceline has an agreement with airlines that they will fill up there extra seats for X amount of dollars. The consumer goes to the priceline site and put a bid on a flight from point A to B. This bid can be raised by certain perks available on the web site...say you want to spend about $200 for a flight but if you register for a certain credit card(just one example) they will add $25 to your bid. So, instead of bidding $200 you can bid $175 and the company will add $25 for a final bid price of $200. Priceline site will give you percentages based on actual fare from point A to B of the chances of your bid will be accepted.(IMHO these are not fare gages and you can get a price lower than Priceline suggests in most instances.
Things to keep in mind
1.These seats can be on flights that are realatively direct or not. Not sure what airports planes might stop at coming from the UK but there is a chance that you might stop over once or twice more than usual.
2. Once a bid is accepted there is no going back you can not change any aspect of your flight weather you like it or not.
3.People have saved lots of money.
4. There are happy priceline customers and unhappy priceline customers(I will never try bidding for a flight again)
5.Flight time with layovers can be a lot longer than normal or the same it's just the luck of the draw.
They also do hotel and car rental bidding.
