Saddest Movie Endings

How has no one said "The Iron Giant" yet? It is the one movie that makes my husband cry every single time!

Yeah, but - SPOILER ALERT -

The end isn't the sad part. That movie always gets me in the feels, but I really get teary when that one leftover bolt starts blinking. Great movie!

Philadelphia 😭 😭 😭. The song….the photos….I can’t 😭 😭

The opera scene was it for me in that movie. Way more than the ending.

----------------

All the focus was on Springsteen's song but Neil Young's was so hauntingly beautiful. Still is.

Lion (a myriad of emotions)

Atonement (I already had the read the book and it still got me), The Perfect Storm,The Bridges of Madison County, The Way We Were, Boyz n The Hood, Brokeback Mountain.

Lost In Translation - I don't know what to feel each time I see it, but it certainly tears at my heart - great ending.

----------

Casino does me in. But I can never decide if it is sadness or pure ****ing exhaustion.

I forgot about Nights in Rodanthe... it was not what I was expecting. I remember seeing the trailer, for some reason I thought it was about happy stuff and it looked pretty cool. I was home alone one night and decided to watch that. I didn't dislike it, but it was just entirely different than I was expecting.

The Notebook started off sad and just went downhill from there... At least I knew what I was getting into on that one.

I noticed this thread about a week ago, but didn't respond then. I didn't read any of the replies, so hopefully this isn't a repeat. ;)

It's A Wonderful Life.

What a sad ending. All of George's friends bail him out of trouble. Phooey!!! I don't think they can just cover a bank shortage like that while the sheriff rips up the arrest warrant. Think of how sad that was for poor Mr. Potter.

George Bailey and his absent-minded uncle needed to be arrested and convicted of financial malfeasance. Then Mr. Potter could transform crummy old Bedford Falls into Potterville, with its attractive array of dive bars, Girlie Shows, and gambling joints.

Yeah, I wish George Bailey HADN'T ever been born!!!

(The Wizard of Oz had a sad ending too.)

Toy Story 3. When they say goodbye to Andy driving away. Every. single. time.
This gets me too, every time. It starts when Andy’ mum walks into his room and it’s empty. And I just can’t stop the tears.

Edit. I just watched the clip and now I’m a blubbering mess.

When that movie came out I had a yellow lab that was dying of cancer. My DW and I were deciding on what movie to see and I refused to see Marley because, just watching the trailers, I knew the dog died. Couldn't do it, still haven't seen it.

Sorry, "spoiler alert".

This is one I won't watch either. I try to avoid animal movies because I find them too hard to get over. A couple of others I won't watch - A Dogs Purpose, Red Dog, Warhorse.

Stepmom with Susan Sarandon and Julia Roberts
I watched that once, NEVER again! We got it free when we bought our first DVD player, a million years ago. It's still sealed in plastic.
A moderately mediocre movie, with the biggest gut punch ending!

Terms of Endearment, it wasn't the ending that was so sad, most of the movie was sad. But it was so good.

I also vote Selena. The ending fading to her in real life and the song "Dreaming" ... cry like a baby every time.

Brian's Song, Ghost
I've never seen Toy Story 3. DD was graduating from high school/going off to college that year. All my friends said "don't see it!" so I didn't.

I will say that the one "dog dies in this movie" that I would recommend is "Art of Racing in the Rain". I absolutely loved the book - the movie held pretty true to the story and actually fixed what I thought was the book's biggest flaw. The ending is actually sort of uplifting.

My DW and I were floored by the ending to TS3, just sobbing in the theater - our kids were in elementary school. Happy to report to other parents - reality wasn't like that. our oldest just started college and it's been nothing but pride and joy to see him thriving on his own.
