I hope it's OK to post this here. My husband and I want to go to NYC and I need some tips.... decent hotels, decent prices, places to see, places to go...

So far it looks to be around $2500 (average) to fly from Alaska to NYC plus 9 nights in a hotel. I do not know NYC, I have NO clue where to stay...

I'd be grateful for any tips you might have...

Also I am limited in my walking... can you rent electric scooters (is this wise in NYC??) or wheelchairs??

I don't need a ritzy hotel Just one close to the "fun" of NYC... like plays and such...

Do you know if most hotels have some kind of shuttle into the city if you're not right *in* the city?

Man I feel bad for my husband having to wheel me around but walking is just not a option for me.

Are the fireworks ON the 4th?

What things do you think a first timer should see? Places to eat (I want to try deli's and such)? Things to do?

I don't think my 11yo is going with us.... so it's just me and dh.

BTW Thanks so much!! And sorry to double post (from the Budget boards) I was told there might be some folks on this board who might be able to help :D

I don't know about renting a ECV, but the streets are so congested, it might be hard to use one. Also, it would make using the subways impossible, they aren't very handicapped accessible. Also, if you utilize the subway a lot, you can really minimize your walking around. I don't know where you plan on staying, but I'd recommend something in the Times Square Area. It's gotten SO MUCH better over the years, and is pretty central to everything. I used to work in Manhattan and DH still does. When we go there for weekend getaways we like to stay at the Doubletree Suites in Time Square. Very central to everything, actually Beauty and the Beast is right downstairs!!! It's pretty reasonable for a NYC hotel, we usually pay $179 per night.

In terms of a shuttle, none of the hotels have them, either around the city or to the airports, you'll have to rely on taxis to/from the airport and either a taxi or the subway in town.

There is a HUGE Fireworks display on the 4th of July. Macy's sponsers it and it located on the East River.

There are so many places I could tell you about, comes from being a NY'er for many years, but I'd post a book here. I'd recommend buying a good travel guide from either Frommers or Fodors.

If you have any further questions about where your hotel is located and poximity to everything, please ask.

charlie you beat me to the punch.

some of the subways are becoming handicapped accessible, but not all of the stations have elevators. here's info:NYC Transit

lol BR...if you notice if anyone asks a question about NYC I always post that web site...it's great I use it all of the time. I just read it and noticed that fleet week is coming up. We went last year..it was packed.

Have fun Lachesis00...if you want NYC fireworks click on events and go to July.... www.nyctourist.com

..also the Winter Garden is a must see(right BR?), it is right across from the WTC site.
