Transformers is open now at Universal Studios Hollywood.

Is Transformers a 3D simulator type ride similar to Star Tours, Simpsons etc. or something else entirely?

Sort of similar to Simpsons, except your vehicle moves along a track going from screen-to-screen.

Am I posting this to help people look forward to it, or to make myself feel good that I've already done it and somehow keep me patient for 12-24 months before I get another chance to go on it again? Perhaps both?

Quote from a review:
Imagine if you could cram all the action of a Transformers movie into one five-minute, 3-D package. If you tried, you wouldn't do better than Transformers: The Ride….
Transformers: The Ride is, at its core, the same type of ride as [Universal Orlando's The Amazing Adventures of] Spider-Man - motion-base ride vehicles moving through a show building where you watch action heros battle bad guys on 3-D screens embedded into the show scenes.

But Transformers takes the experience to new levels - with action that's faster, wilder and more three-dimensional than Spider-Man. When I say "three-dimensional," I don't just mean in the sense of stuff popping off the screen in front of you. I mean that Transformers makes more effective use of three-dimensional space. It's not just robots moving back and forth and side-to-side. Riding Transformers, you really get a sense of height, and the vertical scale of these multi-story Autobots and Decepticons fighting in front you.

Although on Saturday afternoon, I saw the wait time reach up to 75 min.
I'm fascinated by the way crowds work. For most of the day (I'm not talking about the first hour) the wait time is 20 to 30 minutes - then it swells to 75 - then in about 2 hours it's back to 20 minutes (and less) where it stays for the rest of the day.

Met some friends at the park today (Sunday 4/29) who hadn't ridden Transformers yet. They actually got there before I did and rode it once with a short wait and they were very impressed! When I finally met up with them, we did some other attractions before returning to Transformers.

When they say the ride is in "technical rehearsals", they mean it. We got 80% through the ride, before the ride vehicle and video projections stopped. Yup, it broke down. We waited about 10-15 minutes before we were evacuated from our vehicle and walked along the track to the unloading zone. We saw guests from one other ride vehicle being walked out before they evac'd us and escorted us out.

Since everyone in our party had been on the ride previously, we weren't too disappointed. In fact, we were all pretty jazzed to see part of the ride with the worklights on and everything. At this point, the ride was closed and no one was allowed to wait in the queue while they went about fixing it. We went into the various shops to kill time, but after 20 minutes, the ride was still closed, so we went back to the Upper Lot.

For anyone visiting Universal before the official opening of the ride (Memorial Day Weekend), just remember that Transformers is an extremely complicated ride system and subject to closure at any time. But it's definitely worth the trip. Good luck NEST recruits! :goodvibes
