Princess Tiana

how amazing is that picture above

. I told her it was Cinderella and she said "No it isn't, Cinderella has braids just like me!":rotfl2::lmao:

She also pointed out later in the trip that none of the princesses looked like her.

my daughter has never actually said this awesome quote...but she does wonder why none of the girls has hair like hers...a puff "the thing that tiana has on her head" or braids like the brandi and whitney version of cinderalla

I don't like that they are touting her as "the American Princess"

why not??? it seems cool to mee

I dont get it.

I've never once thought Pocahontas "wasn't like me".

Do little girls say that about Pocahontas? About Jasmine?

It alway appears that the likes of Cinderella are singled out. Why is this?

I am totally thrilled that an afrcan-american princess has arrived, however I wont be thinking "she isn't like me".

children no exactly what is and isnt like them or their families...especially if the are from large urban multicultural area...and though we love disney and are excited about all it has to offer, and yes we vacation there a lot bc its the one place that my dd loves (where she can actually get to act like a princess 24/7)...we know the difference, and she knows the difference...taking a pic with cinderalla at CRT can show the difference and they the question.:confused:its just the way children are made

We are really excited about the new movie. We leave for our trip the day after the movie comes out but we won't get to see it before we leave. I wish there was a place at WDW that we could see the movie!

you can watch at DTD...hope you enjoy

and with that body... there aren't many girls/women who look like tiana, color aside

I guess I just see people as people and dont worry about what color they are or how their hair looks. I teach my kids the same.

My oldest son LOVES the Bernie Mac show and has never asked why they dont look like him. My youngest likes the hispanic dinosaur show on PBS....with Emmy and hr brother (?) - cant remember the name of the show...has Zack and Weezy in it.....and he has never questioned it.

I has just never occured to me that Im "not like someone" because of their skin color.

Im sorry to hear that some people feel that way, especially children.

We all see people as people. That doesn't mean we don't notice differences.

And I completely understand that. Its like me expecting someone to look at me and not notice Im fat......yes, people DO notice differences......I was just meaning that I hate to think that someone feels left out because of something so minor.

To me, it seems like Disney is trying to profit on the fact that we have an afircan-american president and the "timing" is right. Shame on Disney.

BTW, the princess is just beautiful!

1) obama is biracial. which is especially important because that poor blogger who is always quoted in the controversy articles concerning naveen not being black uses obama as an example as to why disney is afraid of having a black leading man. fact is, tiana and naveen could give birth to a barack.

2) this movie pre-dates obama's presidency by a long shot. the initial press release announcing the movie came in march 2007. although then, her name was maddy and the movie was titled the frog princess.

needless to say, there were things in the works long before anything was even announced at that.

and rapunzel was announced even long before that.

Why not? It's the first princess story set in the United States. (Heck, are there any classic Disney movies set in the US at all?)
I kinda thought that Pocahantas was set in the U.S. and that she was an Indian princess.

I am OVER THE MOON about Princess Tiana! Absolutely over the moon!!! My princess Jocelyn loves the princess and especially Sleeping Beauty - because she wears the pink dress!!:lmao: I am over the moon because I want my daughter to see beautiful, magical images of herself in Disney products and such. It doesn't make me any different than most moms - I think. But to answer the OP "YES, YES, YES, I am so excited!!!!!". I can only hope that there will be something in the parks when we go the week before Thanksgiving. I wish, I wish, I wish...

This movie has been in the works for years.
Disney is banking on the fact that blacks are visiting the parks in large numbers and like everyone else, we are willing to spend big bucks.

They are advertising their parks, movies and DVC (I haven't noticed much with DCL or Adventures by Disney) to the black community much more than they have in the pass. I’m starting to think Steve Harvey is an undercover CM.:rotfl2:

Who is Naveen?

So true about Steve Harvey. There is a hip hop/r&b station here in Atlanta that broadcast live from Disney at least once a year. The DJ's broadcast live as they are there with there families and they promote DCL! :cool1:

Tom Joyner had held the annual Family Reunion at Disney for years.

and steve harvey's project is the dreamers academy which has run for the past 2 years: http://blog.steveharvey.com/disneysdreamersacademy/, although he had been doing promotional stuff for DVC prior to that

That's true; however, Disney is heavily advertised on both major hip hop/r&b stations here in Atlanta and these are the stations that Joyner and Harvey are not affiliated with. It's very interesting how they broadcast live and there are many Disney execs on with them who are promoting diversity. I love the Mouse because when I go there I am in my own magical little world and I could care less about politics, religion, and other "normal" stuff! :wizard:

I was VERY excited about this film in the beginning stages as it was to be a story about rising above racial prejudice in the old south, particularly New orleans in the turn of the century. That is, until Disney surveyed a small focus group and decided that this story line might possibly ruffle someone's feathers a little, so they completely revamped the story. In the original story line the princess strated out as a maid in New orleans, and delt with the typical things that went along with racial divides in the old south. Rather than showing what was the reality of the situation at the time and why it was wrong, disney has decided to produce a fantasy world loosely based on New Orleans rather than risk offending anyone, and I think they are totally losing what would have been a really good story with a really great message, and completly distorting the histroy of a whole group of people.

Good for Disney:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

Song Of The South deals with racial divides in the south.

Most of the princess stories are based on fantasy, why should this one be any different?
Why does her story have to be a fantasy?:confused3 How many HBCUs are in the surrounding area? With all the professors and graduates, there had to be middle class black communities in the area.

It seems that history is being re-written everywhere just to be pc or to make a buck (school books, movies, TV, etc) Personally if I was Disney I'd be cranking out more princess' because that's what's hot $$$$$$$$$

I have 2 boys so Im not too awful familiar with the Princess stories.....but did Disney change the story line on any of the other Princess stories for cultural reasons?

If Disney were going to change the story of ANY princess, I'd just rather they 'make up a whole new story' ......you know.....just totally create a new character.......that has no 'real' history to it. It can be just as magical! Fact is, regarding ANY culture, if you change the history in a movie like this (that is sure to be a huge hit), then what happens when the kids get older and open thei history books at school? You can't change history.....but you CAN make up a magical princess story for Disney purposes!
