Tip $ crazy...

Does anyone else feel like tipping has gotten out of control in our society? I'm not against tipping for the standard things like restaurant service, but it seems like we have to tip for everything now. It was just last year that I heard about tipping housekeeping at hotels. Before that, I had never heard of tipping housekeeping. When did we start tipping for people just doing their jobs, ie. cleaning rooms, making a latte, cutting my hair, etc? Unlike a restaurant, where you are paying for the food more than the service, I would expect people to perform the service that I'm paying for with excellence. I don't get any sort of tip for doing my job. Now, please don't flame me, but why do people tip mousekeeping? Can someone please explain this to me? I have no problem tipping if it's justly deserved, but I have never seen so much tipping going on for jobs that have never been tipped before. Maybe I should put a tip jar on my desk...Hmmmm....

as far back as i can rem. there has always been an envelope in every room we have been in to leave a tip for the housekeeping service.

Really? I consider myself a frequent traveler who stays at decent hotels, nothing elaborate, and I have never seen an envelope for tipping.

I have been tipping at hotels all my life and my parents before me as well. I believe tipping the housekeeper at a hotel is common. But to the point I do think tipping is expanding to areas it never did, such as at take out places and non-sit down eateries.

Yes, I'm forty(mumble) years old and we've always expected to tip housekeeping at all hotels, not just Disney. Someone I went to high school with worked in housekeeping at a nearby hotel and the tips helped put her through college. This was back in the early 80's so it's certainly not new.

I would tell people that the only time tipping is REQUIRED is at table-service restaurants, or if someone has done something extra for you, like lug all your heavy suitcases to your room for you or somehow gone out of their way to help you. If you don't want to tip housekeeping, then that's fine too.

I do have to agree that tipping certain "professionals" has gotten really out of hand! The ones that boil my blood the most are the coffee shops and smoothie places, that is what they are getting paid to do and it isn't like they bring it to your table, they fix it and and hand it to you, taking the whole 2, maybe 3 steps. I very rarely tip at these places and the workers frown on me but I want to tell them that I go above and beyond what my job duties call for and if anything people are always looking at how to get my photography services for even cheaper!! The only time I tip at the coffee shop is when my son is w/me and he makes somewhat of a mess w/a muffin that they have to clean up!!!
Wow, I went on a rant there, didn't realize I needed to get that off my chest, LOL!

Up here where I live we don't tip like I've read on here. Seriously, I was shocked at all the tip talk since I've been lurking.

10% is what servers get IF they did their job. If they were great, they get 15-20%. If they "suck", they get nothing.

We don't tip in hotels for people doing their jobs. There are no tip envelopes laying anywhere... I am still so lost :confused3

This is my first real trip to the US, so is this primarily an American thing? Or a Disney thing? Or a "big city" thing? I am originally from Winnipeg, and never saw this there either. Sure, someone carries 13 pieces of *your* luggage up the stairs and still can smile at you and be nice - that is a little different. But tipping housekeeping, special CM presents... is that expected now? If I don't leave mousekeeping a tip will I still get clean towels?

I gave a girl at a coffee shop an extra $2 for being just amazingly wonderful to my younger daughter and still smiling after a person in front of me yelled at her. She put it in the dog shelter donation box.

Now I'm really confused.

I agree, there are many things that I wish did not require tipping; however it has become something which is expected.
The thing is, many of the jobs which you are supposed to tip, do not have a minimum wage payment system. They are making less money then one in another job would make. Many waiters/waitresses only get $4-$5 dollars an hour and the rest of their pay is supposed to be made up from tips. If none of their customers tipped they would be hardly making anything a week. I'm not sure how much mousekeeping makes, but I'm sure it's under $7.25. However I could be wrong and am just going out on a limb for this one.

If I don't leave mousekeeping a tip will I still get clean towels?

Maybe... but probably not a towel animal!! :rotfl:
I'm just kidding! I leave a few bucks and a nice little thank you note every day on the dresser and I think that they appreciate it! They are in my room with ALL of my posessions...so I do try to keep them happy ;)

I am from Winnipeg and always tip housekeeping. That is the way I was brought up. (I am in my 30s) I have seen envelopes left in many hotels and if there isn't one, I still tip. Yes, us Canadians do tip, it is nothing new.

I didn't stay in many hotels until I moved to nw Ontario. Then it was mainly for work and hockey tournaments :rotfl:

Good point though about them being in a room with your stuff!! Then again - we don't even lock our doors here and we leave cars running unlocked ;) Let me tell you, when I moved from the car theft capital of Canada to here, it was a big shocker.

Growing up we never stayed in hotels. Ever.

I do love the idea of thank you notes - thank you so mentioning that!

Are there special envelopes that they leave there just for tipping at WDW?

I am also in my 30s and have never heard if tipping housekeeping until on these boards! Maybe it is a big city thing more than a US thing or a generational thing. Disney resorts are the only places where I have seen tipping envelopes as well. And as far as I know, waitstaff are the only people making under minimum wage. Besides, if we used poor pay scale as a tipping guide, those poor folks working Walmart would be tipped all the time!

Joking aside, what other professions (besides restaurant servers) make under min wage?

#1 - taxi drivers. They make below min. wage and generally take home a % of what they bring in that night (45%) with no benefits - here at least they are not paying into CPP or EI either! There have been nights where my fiancee has come home with less than $60. And that is a 14 hour shift including tips.

#2 - anyone who works on commission. During slow months, they are very likely to make less than min. wage.

I always tip my hair dresser though. She are on a below min. wage+commission basis and she is pregnant with twins :thumbsup2

Good point on taxi drivers! I do tip them, as well as my hairdresser! But I worked throughout college in a furniture store-on commission. And I was never tipped. Nor did I tip the car salesman when I bought my minivan. To me, it needs to be for service above and beyond. Which you don't see very often anymore.

I did forget about valets and bellhops earlier. I wonder if they make minimum wage?

I can think a couple things have inflated tips.

1. The percents, 15% was at one time for a perfect meal. Now people say 20% or even more, what got better about the meal? nothing. Also the tip is on the cost of the meal, not taxes or service charges and fees a waiter had nothing to do with.

2. Where you tip, anywhere with a jar on the counter or a tip space on the reciept now needs a tip.

The drive through places with the tip jar in the window are the ones that irritate me for some reason.:rotfl: The little family owned/run donut shop that I use the drive through always has that tip jar in the window. The only person ever there are the couple that own it. All they do is reach me a donut off the rack that's right there by the window. They don't even have to get off their stool or take a single step away from the window, but still expect a tip.:rotfl:

The one that got me this year was when we rented a condo. We paid a housekeeping fee and then when we got there, I found a tip envelope on the table. Sorry, but I am already paying a $60 fee for housekeeping and since there is no service offered during the week and I stripped the beds and took out the trash as I was directed before I left, I really thought asking for a tip on top of this was too much.

Hi folks!

I am older then dirt.....57 and I have known about tipping the maid in a hotel/motel for years.......tipping people making near or BELOW min. wages for service is a long time thing.

However on the other hand, if I don't get normal service I have no problem not tipping and telling the people involved why!

Maybe it's time the corporations start paying a better, livable wage.

Just a old guys opinion!
