Lets use this thread to track Port Upgrades

Has anyone ever been offered an upgrade at no charge if there were rooms available?

Yes, but it was back in 2007. It was a mid-June Med cruise. I received a call from DCL a few weeks before the cruise and was told I had been moved to a porthole room (I had booked GTY and had been assigned an inside room - under the "old" system where it was a general GTY and no IGT/OGT/VGT). This was a fabulous deal. It cost about $4,500 for an 11 night Med cruise in a porthole room. Ahhh - those were the days!!

We booked 11C and were upgraded to Verandah on Mediterranean..May 2011

We just sailed on 1/3 and had a 4B booked, offered an OOV (concierge verandah) for $695, but turned it down. I'm sure someone behind us in line was very happy! (We were one of the first to check in.)

Did you happen to know how many suites were left prior to sailing? Right now, there are 6 V's and 5 T's but we are still 104 days out. I'm really interested in upgrading, but not sure if I want to do it now and pay the price or wait and see what happens at the port.

The first two times we sailed on the Magic (2010 and 2011) we booked an inside no-view room and were upgraded to an ocean view both times. We were upgraded for free when they assigned our room, before we even got to port.

The last time we were on the Magic 2013 we tried the same "trick" without success. So we planned to upgrade at the port. We were literally the first people at the check-in desk and there were no, zero, upgrades. Bummer, so we decided to try the inside no-view room. Boy are they small. I went up to customer service (?) and they said that there were no rooms, but to wait until the ship left port and check back. They put our name on a waitlist. After we left port they called and said that they had a verandah room available that we could have for extra $$, but I forget what the amount was. We took the room and they took our luggage to the new room. The funny thing was that they called and apologized for any problem we may of had and left a bottle of wine in the new room for any inconvenience.
.
I think that they always have some rooms that are unoccupied. Something might go wrong in one room and they need to put you in a different room, example: major repairs or maintenance in the room that you were assigned.

Had you booked specific rooms or had you booked an inside guarantee?

There was only one or two showing online prior to sailing, but it was not bookable online starting about 10 days out, which seemed odd to me.

Our luggage was still sitting outside our original stateroom after the 4:00 safety drill so we grabbed it and took it up to our new room (thanks to others who mentioned this might happen)

Also, we did not receive the info from inside our old stateroom, including Castaway gift, until after we asked our room steward to check on it the next day. We also did not receive the call asking us which Castaway gift we wanted (chocolate, fruit or wine) so I am assuming this call went to our old stateroom.

I was trying to find the procedures to try for an upgrade. Do you have to check in first or can you go up to the upgrade counter first? Do we all have to be present or can my wife check in/ upgrade while I go and drop off the rental car as I am sure that will take at least 45 minutes to an hour.

I wish the $20 Vegas trick worked here... :jester:

Check in then immediately go to the upgrade counter. Be there early!

I don't think you can check in until your entire party is present.

You can totally check in w/out your entire party present... we have done it a number of times and the CM at the check in desk has always told us to have the other persons (usually dh and dd returning rental car) skip the line and just come to the same counter/CM as where we checked in and they will process their stuff and give them their key cards.

We have two rooms booked--a verandah room and an inside room just across the hall. Has anyone ever upgraded to a verandah at the port? There is a room next to our other room available and I'd love to upgrade. It is over $2000 to upgrade now. Is there any chance it will go down? We originally had one deluxe family verandah room booked but we were able to get a regular verandah room and an inside room for less money ($300 less!) than the one original room. We will likely spend any time in the verandah room but it would be great to have two!
