Rocky Mountain Highs (a non-Disney Trip Report) - COMPLETE 2/17

I made an executive decision for this TR. This is the beauty of running a dictatorship.

The TR, yes. The family?
You're more like the prime minister. Julie's the dictator.

Then I can do a wrap-up and move on to a TR for my weekend getaway with Julie to Disney World, which you have all been clamoring for over the last few weeks.

Well, some of you.

<cricket><cricket><cricket>

Ok, nobody’s exactly clamoring for it, but we did get some nice photos I can post.

Ooh. Pictures.

Some of you folks do multiple TR’s at once, and I honestly don’t know how you manage it.

Ditto. I have more than I can handle with one.

Also, today (February 5) is Sarah’s 14th birthday. So now we have both a 14-year-old girl and a 2-year-old boy in the house at the same time. Because we are idiots.

I doubt Julie is... so I'd say your statement is 50% accurate.

Still... dude.
A female teen and a "terrible twos" at the same time????

:faint:

Anyway, I’m so proud of this young lady. She’s such a sweet, easygoing person. She’s priceless to me. It’s a privilege to be her father.

Nicely said.

Anticipation is always part of the fun, but it doesn’t work as well when you’re anticipating a 7-hour drive across nothingness. Such is the price of visiting some of these remote locations.

I've done those drives. I feel for ya.

It lies on the western shore of Yellowstone Lake, which is the largest body of freshwater above 7,000 ft. elevation in North America.

I like that "7,000 ft" part.

"This is the largest body of slightly saline water in the country!"
"This is the largest lake inhabited by sightless beavers in the country!"
"This is the largest lake between 3,452' and 3,486' in the country! If it rains, it's the 2nd largest."

Or, Julie and I did. The kids didn’t bother getting out of the van.

That amazing, huh?

Julie and I took turns walking around the visitor center to get a view of the lake. We both determined that it was still there.

Probably wet, too.

Before long, we were once again entering Grand Teton National Park.

<snicker>

We stopped at the Oxbow Bend overlook once more to drink in the beauty of the landscape.

IMG_0668.jpg

That really is an amazing view.

Also, I really wanted to see more moose. Or meese.

Mooses.

We stopped at McDonald’s.

Good choice. After sitting in the van all day, it's nice to get things moving (rapidly).

let’s just hope you have a full charge on your iPods and portable DVD players. Not for me, of course. I’m driving.

Gotta get some of that "head's up" technology.

McDonald’s was very happy with us on this day, since we made a pit stop in Rock Springs for milkshakes to break up the drive.

Milkshakes are okay.

See? I wouldn’t lie to you.

IMG_0672.jpg

Sure. You scraped that off the internets, didn't you.

We actually made it a full 10 miles before I had to hit the gas pedal again.

Next time try it with the engine off.
I did that once.
Forgot that the power brakes only work for a little while.

Here’s the best dam photo we could get from there.

dam fine foto.

I wanted to re-enter civilization with a touch of class.

:sad2:

Sadly, I had not learned anything from our trip the previous summer, when we’d entered Utah on a Sunday and found that the entire state was closed on Sundays. Three guesses what today was, and the first two don’t count.

Fursday!

(combination Thursday & Friday. Brings the weekend in quicker.)

Domino’s was open. Hey, it beat Chuck E. Cheese.

Wow. I didn't know Chuck E. Cheese was that bad!

…and watched in horror as it immediately froze solid, turned black, and fell off.

Hey! Now you're an honorary Canadian!

The kids, of course, jumped right in.

Yep. Kids are stupid that way.

There could be a dead elephant floating in the middle of live great white sharks surrounded by pond scum in there, and they’d still want to go swimming in the hotel pool.

::yes::

So I sucked it up and jumped in, too.

And you're stupid too now! Way to go!

You know when you’re in the shower and the hot water suddenly craps out and you get that ice-cold blast on your back, and suddenly you find you can no longer exhale? Imagine that for about 20 minutes.

Been there. Remember the offer to come up here and stop at West Hawk Lake?
Yeah, it's like that.

Julie swam with the baby for a few minute and then announced she would go ahead and dry off and head up to order the pizzas.

Smart girl.

No one knows for sure why so many fossils were concentrated in this one spot.

Superbowl 150million BC.

Instead of harvesting every fossil they could find, the National Park Service has preserved the quarry itself, making hundreds of fossils visible still in the rock itself for all visitors who enter.

Cool!

I know I use the word “unique” quite a bit, but really, where else do you get to see actual dinosaur bones embedded in a hillside?

That's really interesting.
I could definitely see myself visiting.

You can compare a dinosaur’s femur to, say, an 18-month-old toddler (toddler not included).

I hate that.
If they're going to offer something like that, at least include the toddler.

See? They have them floating around the place. Just let everyone use them!

I’m sure he’ll remember this experience forever.

::yes::

Or.... not.

so we needed to give them some time in our redneck dryer.

:thumbsup2

Not necessarily because we wanted more McDonald’s, but they had a playground so the kids could bounce off the walls in there for a little while. You do what you gotta do.

Been there.
Took both kids on a cross country drive to visit their aunt in Toronto.
Plotted out all the McDonalds with playgrounds.

and loved the various burger combinations on the menu

Those sound good!

But then I had a big laugh when I saw the name of the “build your own burger” option on the menu.

:rotfl:

However, we did learn that every single thing in this place was made from scratch—burger patties, buns, bacon, fries, onion rings, even the sauces and ketchup

Whoa. I'm really liking this place.

Luckily, they had an “I Can’t Decide” option on the menu where she could get 2 sliders in different styles for $12.95. Perfect.

That's probably what I'd do.
Too many choices!

Great, great food, and highly recommended.

Noted!

I decided I would be derelict in my duty as a Trip Reporter if I did not sample this for you.

Thanks. Your sacrifice has been noted.

Ok, maybe they don’t milk their own cows, but still

Maybe they do.

Yes, and I’ll pay with my own money. How will you pay for yours?

Instead, they said the ice cream was actual Oreos that had been creamed(!). Don’t ask me how that works, because I have no idea. Anyway, after they make the ice cream from the Oreos, they also pour more Oreo chunks in.

mmmmm....

And so it came to pass that on the last night of our vacation, after covering approximately 3,000 miles, 5 states, and 10 National Park sites, we spent our final moments eating homemade ice cream on a pleasant summer evening in downtown Denver.

Sounds like the perfect way to end a trip.

and the rental car employee was impressed at how many miles we’d put on the van in 2 weeks.

I like to see the look on their faces when I tell them the mileage... which is free and unlimited.

Another epic adventure in the books! I'm putting the 5280 burger bar on my list...that ice cream sounds amazing! I just won't go today with over 1 million people downtown for the stupid Broncos parade.

Jill in CO

I don't see anything wrong with that. Unless they have Peppermint.

MMMM Peppermint.... My choice too IF it is between Thanksgiving and New Year's. Any other time Rocky Road or something with chocolate and nuts. or caramel.

Ah yes, it sounds like you're getting to that point where the kids can pick on you as well as you pick on them! It stinks. j/k

Fantastic report Captain. I want you guys to always be traveling and reporting for us. And no, I will not pay for it, so don't even think about crowdfunding.

Looking forward to the next adventure.

pixiedust: Happy Belated Birthday, Sarah!

Thank you!

and you just like saying "Grand Teton"

Well...yeah. (snicker)

I'm pretty sure their state motto is "Closed Sundays"

It really has to be. Every town is a ghost town.

Great job.

Thanks, and thanks for reading!

The TR, yes. The family?
You're more like the prime minister. Julie's the dictator.

I don't even know if I have that much power. I thought I was just a figurehead.

<cricket><cricket><cricket>

Great. My worst fears are confirmed.

Ooh. Pictures.

It'll distract you from the crappy writing!

Ditto. I have more than I can handle with one.

Seriously. It takes a lot of work to make it this bad.

I doubt Julie is... so I'd say your statement is 50% accurate.

Still... dude.
A female teen and a "terrible twos" at the same time????

:faint:

It's exactly as painful as it sounds.

Nicely said.

Thanks!:goodvibes

I've done those drives. I feel for ya.

I'm going to have a lot more of 'em this summer!:woohoo:

I like that "7,000 ft" part.

"This is the largest body of slightly saline water in the country!"
"This is the largest lake inhabited by sightless beavers in the country!"
"This is the largest lake between 3,452' and 3,486' in the country! If it rains, it's the 2nd largest."

:rotfl::rotfl2: Yeah, the qualifiers make it fun. I'm the best male TR writer from Delaware on this whole message board!

That amazing, huh?

Well, it is a lake.

Probably wet, too.

Hey, I didn't think of that!

<snicker>

Doesn't get old!

That really is an amazing view.

I love that park. It's just a glorious sight.

Didn't he lead the Israelites out of Egypt?

Good choice. After sitting in the van all day, it's nice to get things moving (rapidly).

Dad, pull over! He's gonna blow!

Gotta get some of that "head's up" technology.

Sure, what could possibly go wrong!

Milkshakes are okay.

Whew. Escaped under a technicality there.

Sure. You scraped that off the internets, didn't you.

No, because nobody else was dumb enough to drive this way.

Next time try it with the engine off.
I did that once.
Forgot that the power brakes only work for a little while.

:scared1: That sounds like the kind of lesson you only need to learn once!

dam fine foto.

Doesn't get old!

Fursday!

(combination Thursday & Friday. Brings the weekend in quicker.)

I like it, and I second the motion.

Wow. I didn't know Chuck E. Cheese was that bad!

Oh, man. I never, ever want to go in there again.

Hey! Now you're an honorary Canadian!

:woohoo: You know, it did feel like my dollars weren't going as far as they used to.

Too soon?

Yep. Kids are stupid that way.

At least they're predictable.

And you're stupid too now! Way to go!

Darn it. And up to that point, I was a genius. Oh, well.

Been there. Remember the offer to come up here and stop at West Hawk Lake?
Yeah, it's like that.

Gee, it sounds so inviting.

Smart girl.

She beat me to the punch!

Superbowl 150million BC.

That was the line for the men's room during the halftime show.

That's really interesting.
I could definitely see myself visiting.

Oh, sure, it's a real easy stop to make if you're out there visiting...um...

Ok, you really have to want to visit.

I hate that.
If they're going to offer something like that, at least include the toddler.

Just borrow ours if you go. We'll be happy to loan him out.

See? They have them floating around the place. Just let everyone use them!

In fact, take your time! No late fees whatsoever.

Been there.
Took both kids on a cross country drive to visit their aunt in Toronto.
Plotted out all the McDonalds with playgrounds.

::yes:: If you've ever been a parent, you understand.

Those sound good!

Oh man, that was a great place.

Whoa. I'm really liking this place.

So good. You wouldn't regret it, that's for sure.

That's probably what I'd do.
Too many choices!

We'll just have to keep returning to try them all!

Thanks. Your sacrifice has been noted.

I appreciate that. This is a tough, thankless job sometimes.

Maybe they do.

Yeah, I guess I wouldn't really know.

Sounds like the perfect way to end a trip.

Ice cream is the perfect way to end anything, really.

I like to see the look on their faces when I tell them the mileage... which is free and unlimited.

::yes:: Suckers!

Another epic adventure in the books! I'm putting the 5280 burger bar on my list...that ice cream sounds amazing! I just won't go today with over 1 million people downtown for the stupid Broncos parade.

Jill in CO

I guess that's the one downside of living in Colorado, huh? You were a transplant within your own division. Anyway, I hope you like 5280!

MMMM Peppermint.... My choice too IF it is between Thanksgiving and New Year's. Any other time Rocky Road or something with chocolate and nuts. or caramel.

I have never been a huge mint fan (except for Girl Scout cookies). Julie can't get enough of it, though.

Ah yes, it sounds like you're getting to that point where the kids can pick on you as well as you pick on them! It stinks. j/k

It IS terrible! Drives me crazy.

Ok, fine, I secretly think it's cool. But don't tell them I said that.

Fantastic report Captain. I want you guys to always be traveling and reporting for us.

Thanks, Glenn! You know, we'll be happy to travel all over and report on as much as you want if you guys will help us fund--

And no, I will not pay for it, so don't even think about crowdfunding.

DANG IT!!!!!

Looking forward to the next adventure.

We've got an ambitious plan. I just hope we're not biting off more than we can chew.

I don't even know if I have that much power. I thought I was just a figurehead.

The Prime Minister is a figurehead when there's a dictator.

Great. My worst fears are confirmed.

:rotfl::rotfl2: Yeah, the qualifiers make it fun. I'm the best male TR writer from Delaware on this whole message board!

Hey! All right! High five! I'm the best TR writer from Winnipeg!
Uh... just to be safe... South Central Winnipeg.... within 1/2 mile of the river... Yeah!

Didn't he lead the Israelites out of Egypt?

That's what Mo says.

Sure, what could possibly go wrong!

Nothing! Foolproof!

No, because nobody else was dumb enough to drive this way.

Well, it lead you to that terrific burger place didn't it?

:scared1: That sounds like the kind of lesson you only need to learn once!

Unfortunately... yes.

Oh, man. I never, ever want to go in there again.

I've never been in one. God willing, I never will.

:woohoo: You know, it did feel like my dollars weren't going as far as they used to.

Too soon?

Yes!!

I hate you now.

Well... more than before.
If that's even possible.

At least they're predictable.

::yes:: Everything they do, we've already done.

Gee, it sounds so inviting.

Yeah, but how often can you say you swam in a meteor crater? Hunh? Hunh?

That was the line for the men's room during the halftime show.

You're gonna need a bigger trough.

Ok, you really have to want to visit.

Burger place.

Just borrow ours if you go. We'll be happy to loan him out.
In fact, take your time! No late fees whatsoever.

Sure! I hear they're great for picking up chicks!
I'll just ask Ruby if it's okay.

We'll just have to keep returning to try them all!

::yes:: A worthwhile goal.

Ice cream is the perfect way to end anything, really.

:thumbsup2

Sad to see your trip come to an end! Looking forward to your December in WDW report and hearing about your 2016 plans though!

The Prime Minister is a figurehead when there's a dictator.

Good point. She really had me snowed there.

Sometimes the truth hurts.

I think I knew it in the back of my mind.

There was writing?

Loosely defined, yes.

Oh, I know.

I know.

Needs more fart jokes.

Nothing! Foolproof!

That's what I thought!

Well, it lead you to that terrific burger place didn't it?

Not exactly. I mean, the burger place was in Denver. So we really didn't need to go that far out of our way.

Unfortunately... yes.

:sad2:

I've never been in one. God willing, I never will.

Wise man. My buddy asked me to come up and help him move one day. He said he'd buy me dinner afterwards. So my family was with me, and he said, "Well, since your kids are here, why don't we take them to Chuck E. Cheese?" So we did.

An hour later, we staggered out and he said, "I'm so sorry. I still owe you dinner."

Yes!!

I hate you now.

Well... more than before.
If that's even possible.

Yeah, but in a week you get to post photos from Maui and remind me I'm not there.

::yes:: Everything they do, we've already done.

And they wonder why they can't fool us.

Yeah, but how often can you say you swam in a meteor crater? Hunh? Hunh?

Man, you know how to sell things to me.

You're gonna need a bigger trough.

::yes:: +1:thumbsup2

Burger place.

Thanks for reading along! Hopefully you won't be too underwhelmed with either!

Hi Mark, I'm sliding in here at the last minute to catch up!

Nice finish to your trip. You really did your resesrch, finding so many geysers and hot springs. Loved the red neck dryer! You have become a road trip expert. :rotfl2:

I can't believe your little Michelin baby is 2 already! Happy Birthday to miss Sarah, too!

Looking forward to your mini TR and seeing where you will head to next. :goodvibes

Coming up for air today...

Heavy on the "sick".

Someone has to play the part.

Here's a smiley to go with it.

One of my all-time favorites.

Love this!

So now we have both a 14-year-old girl and a 2-year-old boy in the house at the same time. Because we are idiots.

It's an elite club. Welcome.

Approaching late afternoon, we arrived at our destination for the evening: Vernal, Utah.

Been there and done that one. Riveting little "town".

Oh look! We have the same picture. Well, except it's out kids, not yours.

The world's first dinosaur bone hugger. A true conservationist!

Coming up for air today...

Hey, welcome back! Always good when you can get a Disney breather in the midst of all that studying.

One of my all-time favorites.

I know you love that one.

Love this!

Thanks! Sometimes you can't be self-conscious, you just have to go for it.

It's an elite club. Welcome.

Um....thanks?

Been there and done that one. Riveting little "town".

They know which side their bread is buttered on.

Ooh, let's see!

:rotfl2: At least he hasn't chained himself to it yet.

Chapter 21: Farewell And Adieu To You, Fair Spanish Lady...

Whether here or on social media, the temptation many of us face is to whitewash our experience. We want to look like a happy family, making wonderful memories and having amazing adventures year after year. Mother and Father fall deeper in love as time passes and the children are all dutiful, behaved and adorably cute.

Well, I believe in being honest. Tell it like it is, warts and all. And you guys know better, anyway. When you spend this much time together in mostly confined spaces like rental vans and hotel rooms, things aren’t always going to go smoothly. The fact that we keep pulling these vacations off year after year tells me we must be doing ok. But my daughter recently reminded me that it’s not all roses for her, either.

At night, we typically have two beds in the hotel room. Julie and I take one, 2 of the kids share the other, and 1 big kid sleeps on the floor. We had a little pup-tent contraption for the baby. The kids rotate each night so no one has to sleep on the floor two nights in a row. Anyway, Sarah says she sometimes has trouble sleeping at night with all of us in the room.

For starters, I snore. Apparently very loudly. This is not news to me, as sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night after a particularly vicious shove in the back from my adoring wife, trying to get me to roll over or change positions. In return, Julie steals the covers. It’s not uncommon for me to wake up (again) to find that I’m completely out in the cold while Julie basks in a cocoon of warm blankets. It takes a lot of work to re-claim my territory.

Scotty grinds his teeth at night. If you happen to be awake, that’s a sound that will drive you absolutely nuts. The baby fusses and cries out occasionally. And David…well, Dave’s sleeping habits have been well-documented here.

I guess it shouldn’t be a surprise, then, that Sarah has some restless nights in our hotel rooms. She is a good sport, and most things roll right off her back. But she did tell me that occasionally, as she’s lying awake in our room at 2:17 a.m. and listening to snoring, grinding teeth, and general chaos, she’ll just yell out, “Everybody SHUT UP!!!”

It doesn’t work, but it makes her feel better.

Anyway, we’ve reached the end of yet another Oblivious Family Trip Report, warts and all. I won’t lie to you and pretend that covering all of this ground and spending all of this time in enclosed spaces together in enclosed spaces is all peaches and cream. Sometimes it’s frustrating. Sometimes it’s exhausting. But on balance, the rewards outweigh the trials. If they didn’t, we wouldn’t keep doing this.

We’ve been truly blessed to see some amazing sights on these vacations. These are some of our most vivid memories as a family. I think they always will be. And this makes them priceless, well worth the time and resources we’ve invested in them. Material things will break. Shared experiences last much longer.

This trip took us through some of the most beautiful scenery the United States has to offer. Let’s take a look at the final numbers:

With that, let’s close the book on the Rocky Mountain 2015 vacation. Here’s the updated U.S. map of our travels:

IMG_0646%25255B1%25255D.JPG

The big kids are now up to 32 states visited, while Baby Drew got to visit 18 before he even reached 2 years of age.

Looking at that map, you may notice that there is a large swatch of unexplored territory in the middle of the country. These are sometimes referred to as the Midwest, the Heartland of America, the Great Plains, the Flyover States, or the Boring States. And believe me, being from Delaware, I know boring states. Guess where we’re headed next?

I now present my Poor Man’s PTR for our 2016 Road Trip.

We’ll be spending slightly over 2 weeks in the Bor—uh, the Heartland of America. Here is the itinerary:

Tuesday: Fly from BWI to Minneapolis, MN. Attend Phillies/Twins game at Target Field that evening.

Wednesday: Explore Lake Superior Coast, Minnesota. Spend the night in Duluth.

Thursday: Voyageurs National Park, Northern Minnesota. Spend the night in Bemidji, because it’s fun to say.

Friday: Boring driving day all the way across North Dakota. Possibly made more interesting if @pkondz is free and can meet for lunch in Fargo. Spend the night in Dickinson, ND.

Saturday: Theodore Roosevelt National Park, ND in the morning. Devil’s Tower National Monument, WY, in the afternoon. Collapse into bed in Rapid City, South Dakota.

Sunday: Explore Minuteman Missile National Historic Site and Badlands National Park. Don’t forget to stop at Wall Drug. Spend the night in Custer, SD.

Monday: Jewel Cave National Monument and Mount Rushmore National Memorial, Black Hills, SD.

Tuesday: Wind Cave National Park in the morning. Drive to Nebraska with a stop at a secret major cultural site in the afternoon. Spend the evening in Scottsbluff, NB.

Wednesday: Scottsbluff National Monument in the morning. Long drive across Nebraska in the afternoon, driving the Oregon Trail backwards. Spend the evening in Omaha, NB.

Thursday: Visiting WWI Museum and Federal Money Museum in Kansas City, MO (and Kansas). Stuff faces with BBQ at night. Possible DIS Dad meet-up pending.

Friday: Drive to St. Louis, MO. Possible tour of Busch Stadium. Definite tour of Jefferson Memorial Arch. Spend night in Springfield, IL.

Saturday: Drive to Chicago, IL. Visit Museum of Science & Industry. Maybe Willis Tower as well? Spend evening north of Chicago.

Sunday: DIS Dad meet-up with @FreezinRafiki and family in Wisconsin. Spend evening in Green Bay, WI.

Monday: Tour Lambeau Field in morning. Drive to Minneapolis, MN in afternoon. Watch July 4 fireworks somewhere.

Tuesday: Spend day visiting friends/swimming in Minneapolis.

Wednesday: Fly home to BWI. Crash.

I really, really hope we’re not biting off more than we can chew with this one. As you can see, we’re covering a huge amount of ground. So we’ll have a lot more quality time in the minivan with each other. Let’s hope the DVD player works well.

I know I poked fun at these states, but I think we do have some interesting destinations on the agenda. I saved the Black Hills region of South Dakota specifically for this trip because I knew that would add a worthy destination to the itinerary. I also tried to find a way to add the Field of Dreams in Dyersville, Iowa to the agenda, but it’s just too far out of the way for it to make any sense. Also, my fellow DIS Dad Barry (FreezinRafiki) pointed out that when we’re visiting, the corn will only be ankle-high, so it would kind of ruin the effect there. So we thought a swing through Chicago might work instead. We have visited the Science and Industry museum there before and thought it was the best science museum we’ve ever seen, by far. Looks like they’ll have a Lego exhibit when we’re there, so that might be worthy of a stop. If we’re not ready to kill each other by then.

If all goes well, we'll be up to 40 states by the end of the trip!

So, that’s the plan, the end of this TR, and the end of the lame-o PTR. If you have any ideas or suggestions for this upcoming trip, I’d love to hear them!

As always, I want to thank you for taking the time to read this, or any, of my Trip Reports. I’m stunned, flattered, and thankful that so many of you take the time to read them. I really enjoy writing them, because it’s a way to keep the memories alive. I always hope that it either inspires you in some small way to have your own adventure, and that it helps with your planning. And I absolutely love reading the comments and feedback, and having conversations with all of you. It’s a joy. Thank you for sharing the adventure with me.

Next up, I will start a Trip Report covering our one magical weekend in December, when Julie and I ditched the kids to go to Disney World…and somehow lived to tell the tale. Look for it in the main Trip Reports thread, or I’ll post a link here when it starts.

Thank you! Adventure is out there!

Mark, thanks so much for sharing all of y'all's adventures. I so enjoy Julie's photos and all the stories. Can't wait to join in on your next TR. popcorn::

I love reading your trip reports and this one was just as great! The area you visited is beautiful. Your trip report has me thinking about taking a similar trip out west soon with my kids. My oldest is a HUGE Broncos fan, so he would be over the moon if we ever made it to Denver. I was there many, many years ago after college and I loved driving from Colorado Springs, Pikes Peak, Denver, Estes Park, and then through to Jackson Hole and Yellowstone. It is some breathtaking scenery.

I'm looking forward to reading about your mid-west trip this coming summer. The mid-west can be equally as beautiful....just a different kind of beauty. And you can't ever go wrong with starting your trip off with a baseball game. That is also on my families bucket list...make it to every MLB stadium. We have a lot to go on our list, but there is just something so enjoyable about spending an afternoon or evening at the ballpark.

Nice wrap up! 32 states down and 18 to go! Will you save Alaska for last, or haven't you planned that far? My kids tell me we should have saved Hawaii for #50 ... they think our #50 will be Kansas or something anti-climactic. LOL. We stopped at the visitor center in Fargo this summer and they have a photo-op bench with a sign above it proclaiming "50th state visited" ... I guess ND is last for a lot of 50 state trekkers?

I feel for Sarah and her sleepless nights! My Dad snored like crazy and I remember more than a few frustrated, sleepless nights as a kid on our family road trips.

Your itinerary for this summer looks very familiar and mighty ambitious! I am always amazed at how much you guys accomplish each day. We did a similar trip this summer when we went to Yellowstone (with many of the same stops - Target Field, Theodore Roosevelt National Park, Devil's Tower, Badlands, Minuteman Missile Site, Wall Drug, Mt. Rushmore, Wind Cave) starting from our home in Michigan. I do have some thoughts to share:

1) Target Field is really nice! I'm not a much of a baseball fan, but the Tigers happened to be playing when we were going to be in Minneapolis and my DH loves baseball. I really enjoyed myself. We sat in the "Our Family" section and the ticket price (which seemed pretty reasonable) included a hot dog and a soft drink. I was expecting a Dixie cup and a little hot dog, but the drinks were quite large and it was a regular hot dog. The section has a no alcohol policy and lots of kids ... very family friendly, but not so good if you want a beer with your baseball. We took the light rail from our hotel.

2)Whew! Theodore Roosevelt to Devil's Tower to Rapid City sounds like a long day! We had short stops in both places and could have used more time - my kids really liked Theodore Roosevelt - prairie dog watching and bison poop never get old, I guess. Plus, it was early in our trip and everyone was filled with that initial excitement energy. Devil's Tower was a last minute addition as we were driving from Cody to Keystone after visiting Yellowstone... it looked pretty close on the map and I remembered stopping there as a kid and wanted to go back. Ha! It was a pretty big detour & my whole family was grumbling about that one (especially the 13 year old who decided that flip flops would be good for walking the trail around the base of the tower) ... but there is a little store right at the park entrance that sells ice cream, so we stopped there on the way out and they forgave me.

3) Have you considered just staying in Custer the entire time for your Badlands, Wall Drug, Wind Cave, Mt. Rushmore stop instead of moving from Rapid City to Custer? We stayed in Keystone and found it was pretty easy to get to all of those spots and it was nice to have a home base for 3 nights after all the moving around.

4)Are you doing an underground tour of the launch facility at the Minuteman site? It's the one thing I regret not doing on our trip. When we went, you had to get there at opening to get tickets for one of the tours ... so we did not even try, but I understand they were working on an online reservation system for tours starting this year (although I think Drew is too young, maybe?). The visitor center was still pretty cool and we did drive out to the Delta-9 facility to stare into a silo, but I would have loved a tour of the Delta-1 facility. It was a short stop and very easy to fit in after the Badlands.

5) Wind Cave is definitely something you will want to "rope drop" or it could seriously delay your travel plans for the day ... the tours fill up quickly. Tuesday is one of their busiest days of the week - ask me how I know ... LOL!

I guess that's all!

Looking forward to your couples trip to WDW at Christmastime!

Thanks again for taking the time to share your adventures with everyone!

What a great wrap-up to an awesome and adventure filled trip report! My Mama has made a stop at many of the places that you are going to be vising on your next trip. I've heard the tales of their trip over and over and over again so it has got to be a great area to visit.

One day you need to plan a trip to Louisiana and Arkansas as both have National Parks that the kiddos could mark off them off their list of parks to visit. You could visit the salt mines and Tabaso plant in South Louisiana, take a swamp tour and in Arkansas, Hot Springs National Park is a where Al Capone used to go to ease his aches and pains and there are some beautiful caves to visit. Oh and you can dig for diamonds in field after field in Arkansas too. Plus, if you were to ever come this way, maybe I'd get to meet you all!

Looking forward to hearing about the weekend trip to Walt Disney World.

Just want to say I have thoroughly enjoyed your trip report. I don't think I commented, just lurked, but enjoyed seeing places I may not get to ever see. I think it's great you do these big vacations while your kids are young. We're tackling a big road trip through CA this summer with our 20, 18, and 15 year olds. Talk about killing each other!
