WDW and DL Pirates to change Redhead scene

This is a tough one. I'm not going to belittle the opinions of people who are strongly against human trafficking (I mean, how many people are really for it?).

But it's a ride about pirates. We may as well just take out all the bad stuff like firing cannons on a fort that is protecting a town. Or every pirate drinking, heaven knows alcoholism is a very real and disgusting thing. Let's take out all the guns and swords. Hell, let's just re-theme it to Jake and the Neverland Pirates, because in that cartoon pirates don't even steal.

I really do think it is tough. There are many reasons to preserve the auction scene. The first being the value of art and history the attractions have. And yeah, I know all the arguments about the theme parks being ever changing and evolving. It also has historical value. Is the whole Pirates attraction a valuable, 100% accurate historical depiction? Of course not, but that doesn't mean that it can't depict certain aspects of history.

I dunno, I'm kind of torn on it. I can understand the real world applications of that scene and why some people don't like it. But I also enjoyed the entertainment value of the 'we want the redhead'.

I bought them at Disney World in February, but the shirt and the pin were both also available at DL (which I also visited) last month (May).

At DL both the shirt and the pin were available in the nearby ride gift shop. At DW, the shirt was in the ride giftshop, the pin was actually way more difficult to find at DW. I checked about 2 dozen pin kiosks looking for it at DW, it wasn't in the PotC gift shop. Found it in Tomorrowland of all places. But it was the same design at either park.

The Redhead Tsum Tsum I bought at one of the Disney Character Warehouse outlets in Orlando for $1.

Here's the shirt on the shop Disney Parks Store. Get'm before they're a relic:

just order it now... thanks... this will be a classic

Well besides them being tied together with a rope, being held at gunpoint, and standing underneath a giant sign saying "Auction. Take a Wench for a Bride" there are very few clues as to what is actually going on.

Yeah, I guess I am just misremembering, because now that you mention it I remember those details. I guess I haven't ridden it enough.

So if they are going to change the scenes to be politically correct, they really can't keep the lyrics, now can they?

So here is my suggestion for the new theme song to Disney's refurbished ride, "PC Pirates."

Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate’s life for me!

We care about women- they get equal pay

Be good, me ‘earties, yo ho!

We think it’s important we all have a say

Be good, me earties, yo ho!

Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate’s life for me!

We eat healthy foods and we never eat junk

Be good, me ‘earties, yo ho!

We care for our bodies and never get drunk

Be good, me ‘earties, yo ho!

Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate’s life for me!

We care for the planet, recycle and save

Be good, me ‘earties, yo ho!

We never do bad things, we always behave

Be good, me earties, yo ho!

Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate’s life for me!

Regardless of where you fall on this topic, that's just good comedy. Well done.

You aren't suggesting the lyrics:

We pillage plunder, we rifle and loot./We kidnap and ravage and don't give a hoot./We extort and pilfer/Maraud and embezzle and even highjack/We burn up the city, we're really a fright

Are bad, are you?

This is a really interesting topic because so often Disney has been criticised for "glossing over" some of the worst atrocities in their depictions and yet in the POTC ride it is there for all to see.

I'm choosing to look at it instead of as politically correctness forcing the change but a different view on historical events with a female pirates finally being represented. As others have mentioned there were some horrible female pirates that gave the men a run for their money.

From the whole "this is art" perspective, yes this is definitely art. However it is not art that has been donated to the, that they want to change. It's their own intellectual property and thus Disney can do what they want with it. Heck Disney even states on their website that if you send them your script or any ideas as soon as Disney receives them they officially belong to Disney (not sure on the legal complexities of that but it is official policy).

Ridiculous, the hippy tree huggers are at it again. If everything that offends a person is taken out, Disney World will be vastly different in 10 years. They are going to have to change almost every attraction in the Magic Kingdom.

Jungle Cruise - some people are actually offended that the savages have dark skin
Pirates - there is an auction of women and also drunken pirates
Country Bears - mentions of blood on a saddle, southern stereotypes.
Tiki Room - impersonations of Mexicans, by probably white people
Haunted Mansion - death is used in a funny manner
Hall of Presidents - some people don't like Trump, ok a lot of people

People have to stop being so P.C. Jesus Holy Christ.

Eh. :confused3 It's still just a ride in a theme park. Plenty of ride videos on the internet if you need your fix of the original once the changes happen.

Everything changes, life moves on. Businesses and theme parks evolve. Rides are not museums to be preserved perfectly for the rest of time, so I welcome changes. There's always something to miss about "Old Disney."

I just don't get this response. It makes no sense. Where was the public outcry for this change? I saw no petitions, no protests, no demonstrations. DISNEY decided to make this change, no one else.

There wasn't a parade of feminists or human rights activists that demanded this change. This came from DISNEY and Disney alone. Why get so upset and assume that someone was offended and caused this change?

It's just plain ol' scapegoating, methinks.

Removing this iconic scene is an utter travesty. Political correctness belongs in the real world, it has no place rearing it's ugly head in any theme park ride. No one comes to the Magic Kingdom to form their worldviews on the pros and cons of human slavery.

"Hmm...I was on the fence about whether women were people or property, but riding Pirates of the Caribbean kind of sealed the deal for me."....said no one ever.

One last though, if instead of women it was people of color from the Caribbean being sold (which Pirates also did) would that be ok? and if not, why is one form of slavery ok and another isn't?
Exactly this. If there was a auction in a ride that featured only people of color being sold as slaves, the outcry would be massive -- and rightfully so. It certainly wouldn't have been allowed to remain in a ride for 50 years. So, if that clearly wouldn't be ok, why is it ok to have a ride that has women being sold into slavery? One would be an outrage, but the other is treated as humorous?

I commented on another thread but to add my two cents: I'm kind of indifferent to the new change. As a kid, even I knew the scene was a little messed up. As a female I was like why are we being sold? But this is actually one of my favorite rides at Disney and I didn't feel the need to change it. But also, I get it and I'm fine with it. I get why some people are so passionate about keeping it the same, its a classic yadda yadda, but Disney always wanted things to be updated and that nothing was ever complete. At the same time the fact that some people are so outraged that Disney is getting RID of a sex trafficking scene is a little weird to me lol. For me, I'm just happy that even though they are changing the scene, the Red Head will still be there but will be a tough chick with a gun.

I read it as tongue in cheek but I could be mistaken

Just telling it like it is sister, they do the same thing with SeaWorld. Everything bad they've ever done is put in bold, while the good doesn't even make the papers.

...okay... but there were tons of active and vocal protesters at Sea World. That doesn't mean anyone should assume the same happened with the POTC ride.

Disney should keep it as it is. They should add a film or lengthy description at the end about the horrors of human trafficking (yes, it's absolutely horrendous) and then donate a certain amount of money per guest that rides POTC to groups that are combatting human trafficking. It gets the point across that they aren't condoning anything bad, helps support worthwhile charities, and brings light to the issue that human trafficking does occur more often than we think.

Yeah, I don't think that's accurate.

Disney is praised and used as an example as impeccable customer service in training seminars.

They are also praised for their conservation and interest in renewable energy.
