We will be going to Disney World with our family (big group of 10) and will have 2 rental cars. If 1 person in our group has an annual pass will both cars be able to park for free??

AP holder must be inside the car getting free parking.

If it is ok, I would like to piggy back on this and ask a question.

We have APs but they are not activated yet. Can we still park for free or will we have to pay the first day and then after activating we can park for free for the remainder of our trip? I've never driven so I don't know how that works, can they scan magic bands and see that you have an AP even if it isn't activated?

You can ask.
If they require you to pay, just take your receipt with you to the ticket booth or Guest Relations that day when you activate your AP.
Just nicely ask for a parking refund and show the receipt.

Thank you, I would never have thought about bringing the receipt. Even if I have to pay and can't get refunded, it is no big deal. Just one day.

I have planned a dinner at Disney Springs the night before we go so I guess the smart thing would be to activate it while I am there. I wanted to wait until the first day we enter but it's not like I will need that very last day of my pass as I know I will not be back there next year at the exact same time.

I have never had a band scanned or even asked to see my AP ... I just say AP holder and they wave me in .. I’m fl resident and go often and never been questioned parking .

The new procedure for activating APs allows that you can get the activation completed at a ticket booth or Guest Relations on an earlier day than you first enter a park.
After that, the AP will NOT start its year of counting down UNTIL you do go through a park gate with your new AP.

I spent 32 days at WDW during the life of my about to expire annual pass and although I wore my MB every day, only once did a parking cast member scan it.

All my other entries through the toll plazas were facilitated by either showing the pass and ID which the CM would check or by showing my pass and ID at which the CM would give a cursory glance and wave me through.

This is what my friend id when she first got her AP she had to activate her AP before and after she did she just showed the CM her receipt and they gave her the $20 back

That is very strange. I'm an AP and go often. I've never just said "I'm an AP" and been waived in

I either A) have my AP card and ID out to show them or B) have my magic band out for them to scan.

Sometimes they look to verify my ID matches my AP card, sometimes they just wave me through. Sometimes they scan my band, sometimes they scan my band and ask my last name, sometimes they don't scan the band.

Very strange you've encountered CM's that just go on your word of saying your an AP. Anyone could say that

If you don't activate your AP prior, you'll get the refund if you have the receipt. I did this at MK and kindly asked the CM if I could get a refund on the parking and she said certainly and took the receipt and issued the refund

I assume they are busy at park openings and just don’t want to hold up lines .. who knows .. I definitely have never had my band scanned .. I do occasionally hold up my AP and they wave me through so ... and not so strange , Disney is NOTORIOUS for not being consistent on anything .

I did this in November. I had my letter showing I purchased an AP and showed it to the CM at the booth. They allowed me to enter without paying for parking. Be prepared to pay, and get receipt if necessary.

@Robo when did this new procedure take effect. That should make things much easier! It would have for me last November, since I went for MNSSHP a few days before I planned to activate my AP and enter a park. (If it was in effect last November I was in the dark about it).

Heck there have been times that we’ve stayed at SoG (so no free parking), they insist on scanning DH’s MB because they see it on him, then wave us right through. Never consistent.

I don't understand why you can't activate an AP online. It would save people a lot of time when they first get there by not having to go to Disney Springs or go to the ticket booth at the park on that first day. It should be a very easy process. Heck, if the pass won't begin its countdown until it is used to get into a park then why should they have to be activated at all? They should come activated and upon your first entrance to the park the countdown begins. I am sure they have their reasons.
