I just checked my old statements from the year I opened the card. It looks the the AF was originally charged on 2/1. If I upgraded say 3/1, would I circumvent the AF cycle until Feb 2020? Or would my anniversary date change and I get the AF charge say 4/1?
I predict the answer will be what you suggested first, and if your AF posts on 2/1 then your original open date is actually sometime in January, and you can pc in Feb. There's nothing definitive I can find about this, I've never read that this is how it works with chase, but from what I've seen people post about their upgrade/downgrade stories as well as my own personal experience points to this pattern. But it's a bit confusing since I've also seen DPs from some people (in blog comments, not here in our thread) reporting that pc'ing did end up changing their anniversary date so I don't know if it's card-specific or if those folks are just not particularly detail-oriented. If you end up going ahead with upgrading it because it's something you want to do regardless of when the AF posts, I would think Feb/Mar would be a good time to do it.
Here's my post from Saturday regarding upgrading our Marriott cards:
I think it hypothetically could be better than that. So far neither he nor I have gotten charged the new $95 AF, and I upgraded back 3 months ago in Oct and have had a negative balance for 3 months due to the prorated $85 AF refund! If that continues to hold true, then you wouldn't even pay the prorated AF on the R-C card! So hypothetically you could go 1 year, 1 month, get your 35K FN cert, then upgrade to the R-C card. Get 11/12ths of $95 refunded, and not pay the $450 AF until your next anniversary date. ETA: and maybe still get the $300 travel credit right away???
I'll know next month if DH's $95 fee posts on Feb 1. Mine, it may not be until June 1 before my new $95 AF posts. (where's a crossing fingers emoji when you need it?)
Using DH's acct as the example:
01/16 - opened old personal Marriott, $85 fee waived for first year
01/17 - paid $85 fee, got old Cat 1-5 FN cert
01/18 - paid $85 fee, got old Cat 1-5 FN cert
12/18 - upgraded to Premier Plus (11th month of cc anniversary), refunded $7.09 backdated to 2/1/18 (equal to 1 mo of prorated $85 AF) , no charge yet for new $95 AF
01/19 - 35K FN cert deposited into his account in his original anniversary month, just 1 month after upgrading, still no $95 AF
ETA: My CSR AF will post 2/1. I'm going to add DH back on as AU in Feb and I'm betting the $75 AU fee won't post until Feb 2020. I plan on CSR being a keeper card for me as long as I have at least 22000 URs to spend.
