Disney Hotel Prices are Out of Control!

Have you looked into what the overall cost (including fees) would be for one of the non-Disney owned Disney Springs hotels? You could get a larger room or at least a bit better of a sleeping situation because you can get suites (I mean hello 800sq ft suite for example I'd take that over 314sq feet). Plus you can get ones that include EMH and 60-day FPs.

Anyways just a thought.
And with the advent of Uber and Lyft, staying at the off site resorts is much more attractive than it used to be, by saving even more money by not renting a car.

This just in Disney does a discount! Holy cow!

Sorry but this is not the first or last discount. Hell we were just talking a month ago how Disney might not offer discounts for the first time. Then they throw out some pretty mediocre discounts and you want to act like they are giving rooms away lol.

I guess Universal is overpriced as well right? I mean after all they offer as much and more discounts than Disney does on cheaper hotels/tickets.

Oh come on. If you know anything about Disney and discounts, you would know that discounts have become fewer and fewer over the last 10 years. They are running 4 well advertised promotions right now. And this as they're coming up on the busy holiday season. The rates for Christmas week at the Polynesian are over $1,000 a night. The Wilderness Lodge where people love to stay around Christmas is over $600 a night. Low and behold, 1 promotion after another.

Universal is far from overpriced. Their regular rates would be acceptable to me for what we get. They just happen to treat their AP holders very well.

I agree completely. Our first 9 trips were at Disney resorts, the last 6 at the Polynesian which certainly isn't one of the less expensive resorts. When we returned in May 2018 we originally planned to try the Contemporary for their least expensive Garden View room. The cost for 1 single room was around $5,000 for a one bedroom. We ended up going to the darkside with a non-Disney resort on property for a cost of $1,700 for a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom suite with a full kitchen. The best part was that it had a washer and dryer so we could dry our shoes when it rained almost every day. I really hate to forgo the Disney magic but there is a point where you say "enough is enough".
And these prices are reason I'm happy and fortunate to be a DVC member.

If I hadn't caved in and bought DVC a few years ago, we'd probably be at Bonnet Creek too. It seemed like a terrible deal at the time, but now it seems like a steal! It's crazy how quickly my mindset changed when prices jumped!

And I agree with the comment on having a washer & dryer in the room. That's definitely been a game changer. SUPER convenient, and DW loves coming home without a ton of dirty clothes.

Oh ok I gotcha. I do think there are options from getting to the airport, even with the accessibility aspect, to a hotel but I want to say that for you it's pros and cons you're dealing with. You can save $ and have more space but there are some other things out there that spending the more money makes it easier. I get it. Just thought I would put it out there for DS area :)
Exactly! It came down to a pros/cons list of on or off site. We decided (the paying adults that is!) that we just wanted a nice family vacation and if it cost more than we wanted then we would just make it work. As of right now we are booked at the new Gran Destino tower and I am excited about that. The rooms look beautiful.

Someone up thread mentioned Uber/Lyft but I personally am not comfortable with getting into a strangers car and I would certainly never let my kids do it!

For me, the Disney resorts are an attraction unto themselves. The only offsite I would maybe consider is Swan/Dolphin because of the ability to use Disney boat transporation and 60 day FP. We also are character meal nuts so the DDP or DxDP saves us a lot of money.

I agree 100%. For us, we just aren't willing to pay the attraction price at the Disney Deluxe Resorts anymore. People complain about theme park tickets. I'll take paying about $50 a day to play in the park as opposed to $700 a night to sleep in a room.

This Disney world veteran 1st stayed on the property at the Poynesian in 1971. Since then we have stayed at all the Deluxe resorts and now conclude that enough is enough! We now go to Europe and spend far less money!

Disney is expensive.

If it isn't worth it, don't go. I have never understood why people continue to complain about the cost...on a Disney board. Ever heard the expression, 'don't go away mad, just go away'? Disney is a profitable public corporation who has a fiduciary duty to maximize profits to their shareholders. And that means they aren't going to lower prices just so everyone who wants to stay there can afford it.
I love that Contemporary Club level is $1000 a night - it means it's almost always available.

Well I'll be darned I guess the owner of the site Pete shouldn't ever complain about anything regarding Disney seeing as it's a Disney board

I have never understood why some people want everything to be all roses and sunshine on the Disney board. What good would that do if everyone only ever said the nicest perfect things about Disney never had any sorts of complaints they just think everything is all peachy keen? This board is primarily used for vacation assistance--and sometimes that will mean sharing experiences even if they aren't glowing reviews.

Years ago we thought about DVC, ran the numbers, decided we were pretty darned happy in a Moderate and, since the DVC comparisons were always to the Deluxes, we let it drop.

Then we had a third kid...

What we quickly learned was that the world is built around families of 4 and you really need at least a 1 br to be comfortable when you have 3 kids. Now DVC makes a whole lot more sense and we took the dive. Even still, even with the recent jump in rack rates, I still don't think we would worry all that much about it EXCEPT that we love staying on-site and really need the larger unit.

Anybody who cares enough to post frequently on a Disney board has an emotional connection to Disney. I don’t understand why people are surprised that it can upset people when they’re priced out of a place they love.

Well there you have it. A pompus "Let them eat cake" reply. Too much is too much when threads like this begin. It is not whether is is affordable by the few but if there is any value at this price point. Disney will learn this soon enough. As for you, I hope you enjoy the upgraded HO-Jo experience at the Contemporary while they steal from you with a "Goofy" smile.

I fail to see how complaining about cost and publicly proclaiming to be done with Disney provides even a hint of vacation assistance to even the most inexperienced Disney fan amongst us.

Now I totally understand that. When you put it that way, it honestly makes sense.

I apologize for coming across as pompous. That said, too much is too much when people actually stop going - not when people start complaining on chat boards.
I feel that club has an excellent value over standard. I'm not saying we save money on food, but with 7 kids it does cut down on quite a few snacks and quick meals that we would otherwise have to pay for.

But will Disney learn it soon enough? Or are there enough people still willing to pay what they are charging?

And as far as Disney being affordable to the few, that is how it always has been. A trip to WDW has always been a luxury.

Sounds like you need to read more threads then because I find all sorts of assistance throughout the threads--even the vent-y ones. I've found also sorts of ideas on how to do things differently.

Heck at some point somewhere down the road someone complained about spending money on water bottles and how Disney was fleecing them out of money and it was just one more reason they were getting fed up with Disney only for someone else to say "hey did you know you can get filtered water for free at many QS locations?". Mind was blown that day for that poster who was complaining.
