The Running Thread - 2020

ATTQOTD's:
- Headed to Disney tomorrow morning for Goofy! And currently suffering a bit of FOMO that I'm not doing Dopey.
- I track mileage on my shoes with Garmin - after 400 miles they get retired and become work shoes. My body lets me know when we are getting close to that 400 #!

ATTQOTD: I track mileage on my shoes in Garmin. I can usually tell when they are ready to retire by how they feel and the weird leg twinges and sore feet I get when running. My last two pairs of Brooks Ghost only lasted to 300ish miles. The treads were completely worn flat towards the front of the shoe!

Update from yesterdays QOTD: I purchased a pair of Brooks Ghost which is my first ever pair of Brooks. Ran 3 miles with our dog and everything went well!

QOTD: Before a morning run, do you drink anything? This could be water, powerade, coffee, tea, redbull, beer, ect..

ATTQOTD: I will have a few sips of water or sports drink, but not much as I dont want to have to stop 3 miles into a run. I have recently found a form of coffee that I enjoy and hear a lot of people having some coffee before a run, but I am a little nervous about doing that. French press + Black Rifle Coffee Co, whole beans = FTW

QOTD: So most folks go with some sort of rule on how many miles on a pair of shoes before they get a new pair. The numbers range depending on the individual. Today I wanted to ask another shoe life question. Regardless of miles on the shoes, how old would you let a pair of shoes get before you get new ones? Would you answer change if you had a certain % of miles on them plus age?

I go by feel. I know when my shoes start to go and when they are totally gone. I use Garmin so it is easy to track your shoes in Connect but I also use SportTracks online which does the same. In both platforms you can set default equipment for every type of excercise. By default by training shoes are added to every run and then I go in and manually chage it for races (racing flats) or trail runs (trail shoes). I believe I can automate the trail runs in SporTracks as well but Garmin is just one setting for running.

All that being said my training shoes (Mizuno Wave Riders) all last between 400 and 500 with the exception of my last pair that made it to about 550. Racing flats last considerably shorter in mileage but I only wear then for races 10K and under so they last a while in years.

Water, only water. This could be a short race or rare morning training run. For a race that is longer (10 miles or more) I may eat something as well but generally just drink some water.

ATTQOTD: I also do drink some water before a morning run. If I have time, I will also drink a cup of coffee:

ATTQOTD: When I run in the morning (typically on the weekend), I will drink a Wild Cherry Diet Pepsi while I’m eating my Zone bar for breakfast. Not the best choice, I know, but I need a little boost of caffeine and I find coffee to be just as objectionable as beer on the hierarchy of beverages.

For my shoes, I retired my most recent pair at 250 miles. I was unhappy about it, but there was absolutely NO tread in a good portion of the shoe. My running app helps me track, but I go by feel and tread.

ATTQOTD: Not before, but during if it's anything longer than like 4-5 miles. If I'm really feeling tired before a morning track workout I'll do a shot of espresso. If I'm thirsty, a couple sips. Anything more feels sloshy and the run is uncomfortable. The one thing that's genius, and that I need to buy more of, is Run Gum. It's caffeinated and serves generally to get rid of early morning dry mouth feeling.

Glad to hear you are eliminating a variable with the new shoes!
I always have water before I go out. Less than 5 miles is only water and no food. If it is going to be >5 miles I will have coffee or wish DH had made coffee for me. I am not going to delay a run for grinding beans (Greenwell's Full City Roast whole bean is my favorite, but not daily grind) or waiting for anything to steep because I will find an excuse to not go out. If I feel I'm not going to make it, I have a stash of chocolate covered espresso beans that may just give a placebo effect, but I will eat a few- they make me happier.

During the week morning runs, I will usually drink nothing for runs 5 miles and under. Anything over that I will probably just drink a little Nuun.
My longer runs tend to be on the weekend and I will sometimes have a few sips of Nuun and coffee before I go.
All runs end with a full 16oz of Nuun. Weekend long runs all end with beer.

I tried run gum and did not love its flavor after chewing for a few minutes. Have others found the flavor makes a difference?
Side note, I did not like it and gave it to my Japanese colleague who alternated between cigarettes and black black caffeinated gum all day long. He asked for more, so apparently the taste is fine for some people, just not me.

ATTQOTD: Regardless of distance I am running or if I am running for that matter, I always have water first thing when I wake up. Just a glass (8-10oz). I try to avoid coffee until I return from a run otherwise, well let’s just say I had to learn that the hard way, absolute worse hour of my life! Never again!

ATTQOTD: Coffee, always coffee. Plus something to keep that coffee from sloshing around too much....granola bar, toaster waffle or something like that.

Weekday runs, I will have a coffee on the 1hr+ train ride in to work and then a few mouthfuls of water before hitting Central Park for 3-5 miles.

I will wake up a bit early on weekend runs to make coffee, grab a quick bite to eat and wait and use the bathroom before heading out.

ATTQOTD: I'll usually have a little water beforehand if I'm waking up especially thirsty. Any run longer than 3 miles or so (my long runs aren't that long yet) and I'll bring water with me, especially when it was summer and it started getting warm as I was out there. Afterwards I always have a little Powerade as I cool down.
