Coronavirus and flying into China

10,000 Wuhan travelers are in Thailand and are banned from returning to Wuhan, China. They have been instructed to fly into Beijing and two other cities where special hotels will host them. My former school in Beijing has now notified all teachers to NOT return to Beijing this Sunday for e-classes, and if they have been on holiday in Thailand, they need to stay in Thailand and be evaluated at an international hospital there. The international grocery stores are virtually empty in Beijing. Nothing is open.
It is really scary

While I am not concerned at this point about catching this here in Atlanta, I do find the coverage very interesting. While not traveling to Asia, we will be going to Europe in the next month.

Anyway, I am just posting to say that hearing about supermarket shelves being empty and food deliveries not coming is what terrifies me Asking people to shelter in place and preventing them from leaving while not having provisions is downright SCARY. I am not an alarmist, nor trying to be one, but I can see that situation getting out of control even faster than the spread of the virus. Something out of a Stephen King novel.

The CDC is in Atlanta. And your airport goes international with a train that connects everyone.

Of course, I’m flying through it next month, so I’m doomed.

When I lived there my SO wanted to be nowhere near the CDC. We watched one too many pandemic movies.

I may be naive but it seems to me like this isn't "spreading" as badly as I would expect...outside of China itself. I don't know if that is because of the precautions put into place, the incubation period, or maybe there's different mutations that aren't easily transmitted through human contact.

I mean I do feel terrible for how China's residents have to deal with this, absolutely, but for other countries, it doesn't seem like it's spreading, though it may be a couple more weeks before we know for sure.

I'm flying to Japan and the Philippines in 3 weeks and hoping nothing major happens between now and then.

There is a possible case in my state now--in my alma mater's town located approximately 30mins from me. Person just travelled from Wuhan but test results won't likely be available til later in the week. Presently the hospital where the patient is at is still open but the patient is being isolated.

2 possible cases at my son's university reported today. Both students had traveled in China recently and are being isolated at home (not hospitalized). I was surprised when they said it could take up to a week for the official results to come back.

It seems almost every case reported are people that came directly from that area of China, and not just randomly...that may be a good sign for not spreading? I'm just guessing, though it may be too early to know for sure

Still not panicking. ;)

Yeah our local news didn't say if the patient was a student or not but I was curious about that myself.

I was also a bit surprised about the length of time for testing. They said "by the end of the week" and another news said "at least several days".

I am not panicking yet either... but it will be interesting to see how the "not spreading" turns out. It's definitely spreading in China. All of the confirmed and suspected cases in the US have been from people who traveled to China, but that could be due to testing. At the news conference today at my son's school, they said that it was really the students' travel history that qualified them for CDC testing. (They are also exhibiting symptoms consistent with coronavirus, but those same symptoms could be any number of other viruses, too.) At this point, I think the CDC is only testing people who have traveled to China or who have had direct/close contact with someone who has officially been diagnosed. They're not testing everyone with respiratory illness symptoms. And since the virus seems to have a reasonably long incubation period combined with the pretty long window for test results to come back, we just might not know that the 'close contact' people are sick yet.

I figure it is either 1. Way over blown with the media hype, or 2. Way more serious than they are letting us know. Unfortunately, only time will tell.

4528 cases in China. Let’s see how many there are tomorrow.

We will never know exactly how many cases there actually are due to many unique factors which underlie the Chinese govt. Virtually every neighboring city of Hebei province is building emergency hospitals to handle cases. They expect a rise in cases over the next two weeks as people return from holidays, and then hopefully things will calm down.

[/QUO
And 108 deaths. That’s a lot.

The sky is falling.
Anyone going to that part of China at this time is not playing with a full deck
