I’ve changed my mind on DVC (for awhile)

We have been renting points for the past 15 years. From either this website, or my brother. This was the year my wife and I where going to pull the trigger and buy. However, after seeing how Disney has treated their DVC members, we have changed our minds. You guys are being treated like second class citizens. It’s like they know they have you, so now they can do what they want. We had a May trip booked, moved it to July, and now we are just going to wait until next year. But I no longer am Interested in buying into a “club” we’re members are treated worse then non-members.

I am glad you are taking a step back because it is really important to understand what it really is.

Owning a timeshare, even a Disney one, means you are no longer a guest or customer of Disney. You bought something you and your fellow owners are now responsible for, and that includes its operation.

So, honestly, those that do believe we are getting short changed by Disney..may not really understand exactly what they own and all it entails.

So far, DVCM has actually come up with polices above and beyond what we, as owners, are legally entitled to.

This was not a normal situation, but I think one thing it did do is open the eyes of many to read their contracts and realize exactly what they bought and all that goes with that..

As an owner since 2006...who bought many contracts totaling 750 points (now down to 450 with another contract for sale)....I am in total agreement with OP. But it has been a long slow beating that has me wide awake now and not just the latest smack. Many many smacks over the past few years. Gosh...too many to bother listing out here, right now. But you all know. I am pretty done. Would like to keep just enough for a once a year trip....shoot, even just every 18 months.

I am a very happy DVC member. Even during the current crisis I think Disney has been a star. They have gone beyond what is required under our contracts. Looking forward to hopefully atleast 40 years of future fun holidays and great memories.

But their going beyond will muck things up for all. For a good year or 2. Good luck booking. Folks thought it was tough to book before....

We've been DVC members for several years and now have 5 contracts. So far we've been happy with our choice and I'm not aware of any ill treatment due to the corona virus sitch. But it's a major purchase and if it doesn't seem right there are plenty of other fun ways to spend money;)

Sorry you feel that way about DVCM. I feel that they did more than was expected. Albeit, a little slow, but they had legal issues to deal with.

Keep this in mind, it was a once in a hundred year event.

You think it was cool to cancel 5 days before check in and not give us all notice, for 1 thing?

We've been DVC members since 2012. We waited for years before joining, buying resale at less than half the current resale price, less than 1/3 of the current Riviera direct price.

I frequently watch prices and crunch the numbers to see if it makes sense to add more points. It doesn't.

If you buy direct from Disney at the Riviera, it could take you up to 30 years to reach the breakeven point (i.e. the point at which you actually start saving money).

Become a DVC member because it makes you happy, not because it makes financial sense.

That didn't just happen to DVC members. Hotels around the country was forced to do the same.
Timeshares all over FL never even closed. But if they could give CRO guests 2 weeks notice, or was it 3 weeks, then why not us DVC too?

We have been owners since 1994, back when OKW was Disney Vacation Club. We have seen a lot of changes, many for the worse. That said, I don't feel beat up over how they handled COVID at all. I think giving back points when they didn't have to was a pretty stand-up thing to do. Yes, it will muck things up for a while, but it will pass and get back to normal eventually.
Now things that really have tanned my hide are the poor housekeeping, the fiestaware dishes being replaced by cheap dishware, and the conversion of most studios into rooms for 5 with those idiotic trundles and folding tables attached to them (in certain units). And don't get me started on the deforestation of the Wilderness lodge.

Anyone remember the outcry over the loss of the peach towels at OKW? Those were the days!

DVC is just a timeshare. Rules for timeshares are very different than rules for hotels. DVC actually did a lot for members who might have lost points because of the resort closure. I had borrowed two points (not a big deal really) and they moved them back into my Sept 2020 UY. Even members who had used banked 2018 points have had them extended for a few extra months.

Our original contracts even state that there is no guarantee that the theme parks will even exist for the entire contract.
