Resort Change by Disney

Here's what I don't understand. We went to UO last week and stayed at RPR. Had a great time, didn't have to worry about park capacity or park reservations as anyone in a UO resort was guaranteed a spot, not to mention the Express Pass (EP). We've never had such a stress free theme park vacation and we are a diehard, drink the kool aid Disney ropedop to close family. We got to ride whatever we wanted, whenever we wanted.

Why can't Disney do this? You stay onsite with the limited number of resorts they decide that are open and you get in.
What am I missing?

I see some mornings the website says there is a ticket event from 7:45am-9:00am at MK. Are those still going on?

We have 3 July reservations for different reasons. The first is 7/1-7/14 AsMo. I received the email, called requesting a change of dates but I didn't want to pay the change cost so I said I'd call back later. That was about 9 days ago. The reservation still appears in MDE.

Will they just cancel it, or do I need to? Should I call and say I want to keep it, and please change me for free to another resort, just to see what I'll get? We don't really want to go without the parks opening.

Just my guess:
Disney has higher park crowds and is definitely more of a destination trip.

They have a ton more rooms for on sight guests vs UO and a lot more annual pass holders.

They are hosting soccer and nba teams and that’s caused a ton of guest changes.

They have a ton more employees (cast members) across parks, hotels, ESPN, Disney springs than universal has - coordinating thousands of people is a challenge - especially since Disney relies more on college program (cancelled) and international ambassadors (sent home)

Finally, as perceptions of coronavirus changes and more people feel more safe or “normal” being out with masks they could get a wave of more people. They want to make sure they have an infrastructure in place to manage that crowd to avoid turning people away at the gate after flying across the country of world to visit.

But besides that it’s like the same.

Sorry if this or similar has been said before, but...
Resort Changes by Disney sounds like a positive thing - like Adventures by Disney, or a "pay $x per night, and we'll surprise you with a higher level property (or room)"

Makes sense, but then why not limit the number of resorts open, which it seems they are doing and give those people the automatic get into the parks perk?
I think right now they don't have enough park capacity in any one park to absorb those guests if they all decide to go to MK for instance. I wouldn't be surprised if these packages they are going to sell for 2021 have a plan-style setup with a designated park on a given day with the park reservation done for you.

Couldn't they close the full one down, like they do now, and say you're welcome to try the other 3?

What's up with the Fort Wilderness Cabins? They seem okay to me. I think that kitchen would be especially nice since there will not be a dining plan. Any specific reason people do not like the cabins?

For me, this is a special birthday trip for my Mom and she actually lives full time in a real log cabin. So it seems like less of a getaway to take a vacation to a smaller and not as nice fake log cabin. She loves her cabin, but it is kind of fun to have something different on vacation.

We're obviously a pretty specific situation 🤣

Since people with current resort reservations with tickets can make reservations four days before annual pass members can then I feel like there should be enough capacity even with reduced capacity for all resort guests to get reservations.
I agree. I'm mostly dreading whether the system will crash all day Monday or not with everyone trying to get on.

Yes, people are upsrt abour the upgrades. However, they only apply to unmodified reservations that are already booked. You can’t book ASMo on xyz with the expectation of an “upgrade”. For many families, including my own, being moved to some DVC resorts would be a downgrade.
We booked for the Skyliner and would be disappointed to be at a monorail or bus resort.
Agreed. We are booked at POP & CBR because of the Skyliner. OKW would be acceptable because at least their studios have 2 real beds but SS would feel like a downgrade. But any other DVC would feel like an upgrade however it looks like values and moderates are being offered FW, OKW and SS only.

Where did you hear this from? We’re a family of five booked at CBR. Won’t be upset with Fort Wilderness, but would much rather have a DVC resort. Wouldn’t mind a 1BR at OKW, or one of the renovated studios at SS. If these are the only options for value or moderate, I’m worried that we would have a higher likelihood of FW, because the options for 5 are somewhat limited.

I know some people love them, but I wouldn't want the cabins either. Just keep in mind that with pre open changes, if people opted not to accept what was offered, they had to pay the difference for the upgrade.
Yes I know about paying for an upgrade. I have read that they let a couple of people choose between a couple resorts.

I put this in another thread too. We are YC from Aug 4th-11th. Anyone have similar reservations or a wild guess at this point what “could” happen? Move us? If so, where???

Obviously I haven’t heard anything officially, no one has. But that is what was offered to June 22-July 11 value and moderate guests and rumored to be what will be offered if value and moderate resorts remain closed on July 11 on. I just wish something official would be announced.
