VP Pence to host call with cruise line industry.

This is not the last we are going to hear of any new viruses in our world. This could happen next year and the year after that. We can't keep shutting down the world every time this happens. We have been living with the Flu every year since I don't when. I think the proposals talked about with the Vice President will help make cruising safer long term even after this virus gone or greatly diminished.
There is a big difference between a virus with a vaccine and a treatment - and one without any. You know, if we shut down the whole world for 14 days everywhere - and I mean everywhere - this virus will be gone. Finished.

I very much agree that the cruise industry should take this opportunity to rethink everything in their business. From occupancy to boarding checks to ventilation to food preparation. Viruses will continue to exist as long as the human race exists, but this is now a wake-up call to change - for everyone in general, but the travel industry in particular.

The challenge is that these meetings are being either motivated by or clouded by the politics of the upcoming election. There is a rush to announce something. The panel submitted its 74-point recommendations at the end of September after taking an entire summer to study them. We are barely three weeks out - without any trial runs from any company (other than MSC and Carnival's Costa brand in Europe). CDC is short-handed on many fronts, and here comes another unrealistic deliverable.

A botched restart will shut the industry down for the next six months or until a vaccine is widely available. Do it right the first time around.

1) California
2) Other than NCL America's Pride of America, all ships go to foreign ports so that is a big part of cruises being able to resume.

Watching the news right now. Ironic how divided people are on covid-19. Protests today demanding prisoners be released because the confined space of prison is dangerous due to covid. And people wanting cruises to resume so they can be in the confined space of a cruise ship

I live in Florida.
I have read on line that there are some Caribbean ports that have protocols in place and may be ready to open soon. Some are already open.
I would post a link to the story but I do not know if I am aloud to with out getting into trouble. It was dated October 12 so it is pretty up to date.

The only thing I can see about the protest you mention,People do not want to be in prison regardless of the virus or not, they have no choice, and yes I am sure they do somewhat pack them in to an extent.

People who want to cruise understand the possible risk and are willing to go on a cruise, plus people won't be packed on a ship like a prison, at least we hope not. Especial in the beginning when cruising eventually starts.

Other issue that I do not have an answer to, how are cruise lines treating workers who do not feel safe returning to work at this point? If they refuse can they return to work later when they feel it is safe? Or will they be black listed?
I raise the question because on Tuesday a co-worker's Uncle died from covid-19 three weeks after being forced to return to work. He did not feel it was safe to return to work yet, but it was return now, or never. Unfortunately, this is the second co-worker's relative to die from covid-19 week after being forced to return to work or lose his job. The first was in June in Phoenix, and THAT death made national news and forced the employer to close down again.
The common denominators were both were men, both were in their 60's, and both were forced to return to work before they felt it was safe.

This is actually my concern. I would hate to think people will be forced back And then lose their job if they don’t go now....especially with numbers increasing so much.

That is a great question. Most cruise workers come from country's that may not have strong laws protecting them. I would hope the cruises would be willing to work with their crew and not black list them because of personal safety/health concerns.
I also would think the cruises will start up slowly and they would not need as many people in the beginning. I am sure the staffing agency's that help get crews for the cruise line industry have plenty of people ready to start.

I am sorry your co worker lost a family member.
As far as people being forced to return to work in the U.S. or lose their job, I don't know the answer. I would hope there would be some leeway but if a company is following all the safety and health protocols set forth by the CDC it puts people in a difficult position. The business needs people to work to stay in business however a persons health and safety concerns need to be taken into consideration.
My wife works for a company that allowed them to work home for three months. At some point they were told it was time to come back to the office. They were told all the health and safety protocols that were put in place. So far every thing has gone well. They were also told people needing to work from home would be on a case by case basis and there are some people still working from home. I guess it all depend on the kind of work you do.

I have talked to some Disney cast members and was told they removed the discipline point system. I do not if this is true but if it is that allows someone on the schedule called back to work to call out sick with no discipline against them.
I know people that are working are glad to be back and I know some that can't wait to get back to work.

Disney said earlier this summer that the cruise line would be the last part of their Parks Division to reopen. With Disneyland still closed, do we think they will go ahead and start cruising? Just something I've been thinking about as we seem to be getting closer to the lifting of the cruise ban.

My concern is safety. We keep comparing to other industries that are open or have reopened with questionable results. Dead people don't need jobs, to be blunt.

Living people need them. To be blunt.

I think if the cruise ban is lifted even if Disneyland is not opened cruising will start out of Port Canaveral.

I think cruising would restart, I don't see any scenario where DL opens anytime soon as Newsom would prefer they remained closed forever, lol. I don't see them waiting around for wacko CA to let DL open to restart the cruise line business.

I don't want this to come out wrong but 80% of the deaths are people that are most likely retired. Working-age people need to be allowed to work and provide for their families. I do believe cruises can resume safely.

Where did you get that statistic?

I found this on the CDC website:
532752

It does show that the majority of deaths are us old people. But it's the younger people who are getting it more. Possibly bringing it home to grandma & grandpa?

Besides the fact that more cruisers are in that retired age group.

And they spread it to their older family members. That is why there is such concern with Thanksgiving approaching.

Just because you don’t die from COVID doesn’t mean you’ll be fine. The virus is known to create pneumonias, strokes and heart attacks on younger people (even those who were previously healthy). The impact of the virus can last for so much more than 2 weeks... I feel like people don’t talk about that enough.

But on top of everything else, the real danger is overwhelming the hospitals and ending up having people (who would have been saved otherwise) dying because there was no more beds/not enough staff available. This is why we are having lockdowns.

When cruises will start again, they have to be a pretty solid strategy because nobody wants to see last spring’s fiasco happen again. If they fail, the cruising industry could end up having a very hard time recovering.

Although I am not stating this as a political argument, just an possible option. I think that the President will allow sailing in November to appease Florida and help it’s economy. Leaving political opinion out of this question...

Will we loose ports (departure/foreign) on short notice if the cold/flu/Covid season overruns hospitals? If your only port closed because of full hospitals, and it closed before you set sail. Would the cruise then be canceled? Normally cruise lines would try to select another port on short notice, but currently we are a little short on ports.

Probably not much of a big deal for those of you in Florida, but as a Snowbird, it has me thinking.

Ultimately, I don't think politics will be the deciding factor, the virus will be. I don't think it matters if cruising resumes today, or a year from now, there will be at least one shutdown of the entire cruise industry after cruising resumes due to an outbreak.

If we sail before January 20 it’s political. And I would not bet on anything, happening or not happening, before that date.
Personally, I like science. Sadly science has a little trouble picking a day on the calendar. Does no good to rush them, I will wait happily for the announcement that science was able to come up with something safe, valid and reliable to reduce the risk. About one month after that safe aid is rendered to the public I’ll be on a Disney ship.

Well this Vice President might only be able to get things moving for 3 months and then another administration might be in power. The career CDC people don’t want cruising to re-start yet. Until we get through the election I can’t imagine any cruise line making million dollar decisions to open without knowing the outcome (although they may say they were set to open as a way to pressure a potential new administration). I don’t think we’ll know more until we get an election result.

I do wish this weren't politicized. The virus does not care who is in charge - it is either smart and reasonable to reopen or it isn't. People have pointed out that cruising in Europe has been restarted for a few weeks now, but there is also an uptick happening, and there have been outbreaks onboard.

As long as it is ontopic and doesn't cause an uproar (fighting, name calling, etc) links are a-ok. If they aren't, there is a filter on the boards that will block them. :)

Ok. There are going to be issues with some cruise lines that have restarted and if some people have an issue with cruising now then don't go on one now, it couldn't be any more simpler than that. I know it is scary for some people and I understand that but again we have to start somewhere. I just hope people can root that DCL is successful when they get underway again. I know I will.
