Okay before I go back and read the 20 pages from when I've been on Spring Break....looking for some help here.
I refi'd in October. My payment went down about $150/mo. Well I just got a letter they botched my escrow estimate and now want to add $300/mo to my payment. Do the math....I'm now paying MORE with a lower interest rate. I've wanted to stop doing escrow for awhile and this was the straw to break me. Sorry but they don't need to be sitting on $5k in my escrow account, it's time I get to earn 1% on that, LOL. I need about $6k to cover taxes and insurance. That works out to $500/mo (I currently pay $494). I called and cancelled my escrow today. So now I need to start transferring my "escrow" myself each month.
I'm thinking of creating another savings account (or I guess use one of the 57 I have) for this. I know I'll be "short" in August when my first bill is due. But I have savings I'll pull from and just try to keep track to balance it out. I think a lot of you who do this pay taxes w/ your cards (I'm looking forward to those points or using for a SUB!). I know my insurance will take a CC, I pay my auto w/ one. My city charges 3% to pay my water bill w/ a card. Can I assume they'll do the same for taxes? Is that the norm? Any ways around this?
Any other tips I should know from those of you doing this for awhile now? My head is slightly spinning (might be from no sleep and getting to the ATL airport at 5am) so any help you have is appreciated! I feel so adult, LOL. My ex handled all of our finances. I defaulted to him since I was 19 when we got married and he ended up as a CPA. The BF is shocked at how terrible my ex is with money. I've shared before, I'm living the EXACT same lifestyle (I kept the house) with $100k less in my budget annually. There were months we were paycheck to paycheck and I wonder why/how now! He has the CSR (got it when we were married still and planning Hawaii). He never uses any of the benefits or uses it ever! I have told him before he cancels to cash out the points or transfer to me (we still hold a joint account thru Chase, and he never changed his address, lol). I mean he couldn't be bothered to call for the $150 retention they offered. I shouldn't be shocked, this is the same man who didn't get an oil change on his 2019 Jeep Wrangler and had to put a whole new engine in.....I also did said refi because I was holding his VA loan on this house. He had the right to ask for it at any point, and since the rate was lower, I figured it was time to do it. His interest rate is 4.5% currently and again, he can't be bothered to refi even when I told him how low VA rates are.
It really sickens me to think how much more money we could have had if I didn't "trust" he was smarter than me w/ money. Or even the vacas/fun we could have had w/ the kids. Instead I got $4k in debt when we divorced. But nonetheless now I'm living within my means, managing to save a little, looking to buy a rental property/vaca home, and possibly retiring in 2024! And my BF is insanely responsible w/ money (minus wanting to buy a race horse), and pilots make A LOT! I've even gotten to the point where I'm going to teach my 16yo how to do the credit card rewards/points so she can start using her dad's points. As well as teach her so she can do this in a few years herself. She'll be making great money at 20, and I don't want her to make the mistakes I did for 22 years.
Okay sorry for the ramble. Now back to page 306, LOL
