The Running Thread - 2021

October totals: 18.2 miles

I've been cleared to run again after being sidelined for 10 weeks with a tibial stress fracture. This has been the most frustrating injury!! I was forced to defer all 4 of my fall races, including the Chicago Marathon, which majorly bummed me out.

On the bright side, during my time off from running, I've rekindled my love of swimming. Maybe there's a triathlon in my future? I will definitely be keeping swimming in the rotation for cross training from now on.

My plan for the next 2 months is to slowly build back a solid running base so that I can be healthy for all of my 2022 deferrals.

I've been diligently training for DMW and have managed to get some flat runs in with a sub-10-minute time (for me, flying). So I signed up for a 10k that was this past weekend, but in the meantime, got hit with a bad sinus infection that lingered nearly 2 weeks, limiting the amount of running I could do. But a visit to the doc and a steroid shot and I was able to at least go do the run. It's advertised as a fast 10k (it is) and I was still hoping to get near a ten minute mile.
I *crushed* it! I not only finished in under an hour, but managed a 9:26 pace! And then went and put in 3.5 miles at 10:02 the next afternoon on a course with hills.
Thank you for listening, since I don't think the rest of my family really gets how big of a deal this is to me.

That's awesome! Non-runners cannot understand your frustrations, but you are seriously kicking ***!

I don't post in this thread a lot, but I'm super happy that my Oct mileage was 87+ miles, which is the highest number for me in about 10 years. My average pace is embarrassingly slow, but at least I can go out and cover 5 miles without wanting to die! :-)

That's awesome! My Oct mileage was 82 miles which is my highest number EVER! I switched from Hal Higdon's Novice plan to a different first-time marathon plan which increased my mileage, so I believe that November will crack the century mark. Nonetheless, I'm finally onboard with low heart rate (MAF) training and my pace feels embarrassingly slow at 12'30". However, I'm already seeing improvements in only one week. Who knows what can happen come January?!?

I'm using a Hanson plan that has more mileage than any plan I've used before. It is actually one of their lower mileage plans but so far it seems to be working for me based on some check points and where my VDOT places me for my workout paces.
What’s a typical week?

October:
Total Miles: 148.3
Avg Pace: 9:17 min/mile

Best running memories from the month:

-Setting my 10 mile PR at Broad Street
-Running around Bay Lake while at Disney World for the 50th anniversary. The guards to and from Magic Kingdom were particularly awesome cheerleaders.

Congrats on a great month!

When you say "running around Bay Lake" do you mean Seven Seas Lagoon (where MK and the monorail resorts are)? Or is there away to run around Bay Lake (where WL/Ft Wilderness are) that I need to learn about??

After seeing all the posts with training data, I thought I'd look at mine. I started spreadsheeting my runs back in August (because, well, I spreadsheet things....)
My training has nominally been to alternate running days with rest days, but the "rest" is usually a brisk (appx 15-16 min mile) walk to get my steps in.
My thoughts in looking at this:
1. I obviously don't have my caloric intake down as close to 2k/day as I thought or else more pounds would have fallen off.
2. My monthly mileage is a lot less than some of the others. Oct had a nearly 2 week layoff due to sinus infection, plus a big gap in September. Maybe due to weather? Those meddling kids? I don't remember.
3. I'm really pumped about seeing the average pace drop. I really like that.
YMMV

That's really great. I'll be thrilled if I can get my pace to drop like yours. Keep at it!

I have been curious about people’s experience with the Hanson plans. I have used several different plans over the last few years but most of them have 4 days a week of running. When I looked into the Hanson plans they are a significant uptick in running days and mileage compared to ones I have used. What was your experience changing to the Hanson plan? How many days a week and mileage were you averaging before making this switch? How are you liking it and will you continue to use them?

Hi there!
Does anyone have any good pre/post stretch suggestions for the calf/Achilles area? It’s the area I feel the most tightness when running.

Not sure if you got a reply for this....I find the basic standing calf stretch to work for me. Stand about arm's length away from a wall with one foot back (the leg you want to stretch), front knee slightly bent, hands touching the wall. Then lean your whole body forward in one continuous line from your back foot, keeping your back foot anchored. You should feel a stretch in your calf. To get at the soleus (lower calf) bend the back knee slightly and you will feel the stretch go lower.

Or just look at this picture :)

Another one that works for me for soleus is to do a very low squat-- with butt down by heels, heels down on the ground, hands on the ground in front of you. Then gently lean slightly forward and towards one leg--you'll feel a low stretch on that leg's soleus. Repeat on other side.

Finally, stair heel drop--stand on a step and dangle your heels off the step.
