Josh Duggar's Trial Begins Today... GUILTY ON ALL COUNTS!

I saw one of the potential jurors was dismissed because they were the FATHER IN LAW of a Duggar. How the heck did they even make it that far in the jury selection process?! I guess the judge was flabbergasted, lol.
It all depends on what valid reasons can be given to be excused before you make it to the court house. Conflict of interest usually needs to be determined in person because sometimes what people view is a conflict of interest doesn't meet the requirements (though not speaking to this case when it's a close enough family member we're talking about).

In my county you really can't be excused over the phone. It basically has to be health reasons that make it so you are unable to physically attend. If you feel you need to be excused for other reasons than health (even for childcare issues) you have to appear in court first. You can't be excused for scheduling either. You just have to reschedule but that won't mean you're actually excused.

For Federal court in my state excuses have to be in writing first not over the phone (unless it's last minute scheduling conflicts). That may be possible to find out earlier on a conflict of interest but they I'm sure would investigate that to ensure they really were the father-in-law.

ETA: and the other person makes a good point about knowledge of what the trial is even going to be about. I think it's possible depending on the community for someone to sometimes have a good idea what the trial will be but majority of the times you likely have zero indication of knowledge beforehand

Usually if there is a high-profile case coming up, especially Federal, people who are in line for the pool are sent a questionnaire that asks some basic screening questions designed to weed out candidates that have an obvious conflict of interest. High-profile trials require a much larger juror pool than normal; sometimes they will start with a list of 600-700 people, with the expectation that only about half of them will end up being called, because the rest will disqualify themselves with answers to the questionnaire. It's always obvious from the questions what the case actually is, they are looking for folks who've been living under the proverbial rock. Getting excluded from that particular pool doesn't get you out of serving; it just gets you moved to another pool.

It's especially hard to get a good pool for a sensational trial in a rural area, where just about everyone knows everyone else -- and a good deal of their business, besides. Gossip is a major force out in the country. I think a lot of folks who have nothing better to do will lie on the initial questionnaire just to see if they can get close to the action. (Jim Bob was probably seething when his BIL stood up and identified himself. Just think of how useful it would have been to him to have a mole in the jury room, even if he was only an alternate.)

BTW, Duggar's defense recently added a new attorney to his courtroom team. He's a young rising star whose specialty is criminal appeals. Putting him on the active team at this stage means that at the very least, they are hoping like mad to find a procedural error to use to get evidence excluded, or at worst that they are fairly sure that he will be convicted and require an appeal. Either way, that TLC money just started burning up a little bit faster.

I was shocked to read his wife has recently giving birth to another child.
She named the baby, Madyison. Her husband was called out for being on that Madison website for cheating husbands several years ago, I just don't get it. Of all the names in this world, you choose that one?
She strikes me as ... not too smart.
Idk the Actual facts versus the media version which I have no
Confidence in. I guess we’ll see just how much Actual Evidence they have and let a Jury decide. I .. mostly…have faith in them. And They seem to get things Correct.
yes… a strange family situation for sure.
I was going to say something similar. We -- well, most of us, I suspect -- only know what the media has said, and the media isn't all that interested in being honest. In all fairness, what we KNOW is hearsay, and Josh has been thoroughly "tried" in the court of social media. We all want the trial to be fair.
The dad doesn’t remember much of when his son molested multiple of his daughters?? That’s the kind of thing that should haunt you for the rest of your life.
Yeah. Thing is, Jim-Bob is in a no-win situation. If he supports his daughters, his son faces serious punishment his son's children suffer, and he probably starts supporting his son's family financially. If he supports his son, it's grossly unfair to his daughters and could come back to bite him in the butt in multiple ways -- remember, he already lost his cash-cow TV show over this; Jim-Bob has already suffered because of his son's shinanigans; and, regardless of the outcome, he will continue to suffer. And even if Joshy-poo is a monster, he's a monster whom Papa Duggar loves.

I don't have a lot of sympathy for the man because he could have done something years ago, and he chose to sweep it under the rug, but TODAY it's a no-win for him. Maybe he sees "forgetting" as his only defense against an impossible position.

Isn't he running for state office in Arkansas? I doubt his life suffering, and if it is he brought it upon himself. I doubt he would ever support his daughters because of his religion.

I lurk. No account.
I’ve been following FJ on and off since the mid-2000s back when they were on EZBoards. I have an account but I’m not very active — probably less than 5 posts ever. I’m much newer to Reddit but participate more there.
