Fair enough. I'm not sure what exactly it took to turn our family into fans of the sport. Seriously, I thought the same as you growing up. It's only within the last 10-15 years that we became fans, and it's definitely because our kids played.

That's exactly why I won't watch men's soccer. They are ridiculous.

This is why NFL isn’t that popular in the U.K. our fellas play Rugby, get seriously banged up without all the helmets, pads etc. Seen as very soft. And all the stops in play for adverts.

Rugby is played here as well. But I think the newer understanding of traumatic brain injury has adjusted our understanding of parts to contact sports.

MLS takes concussion protocol more seriously than FIFA. Shameful.

Well TBI is still primarily diagnosed after an autopsy so yeah.

I think many fans of the NFL agree that at times there's too much that has been added in reaction to our growing understanding of the ramifications, on the other hand most everyone also understands the possible alternative is not something we would wish on anyone. It's been expanded to other contact sports in terms of tweaking things here and there but the NFL has the most public awareness I think.

USA beating England in 1950 is considered the biggest upset according to most British people I believe. They said it was worse than when England lost to Iceland in 2016.

I was listening to an English podcast and they mentioned the 1950 game as possibly still the biggest upset with N.Korea v. Italy in 1966 number 2. In 1950 a lot of the US players had never been capped before the World Cup. Just because it happened a long time ago doesn't mean it isn't still a remembered part of soccer knowledge in England and most of the world. No different than baseball fans that remember the Black Sox scandal even though some of their grandparents weren't even born yet.

A fair number of pundits have Japan getting out of the group with Spain so while it is an slight upset based on odds not one that will go down in history. Germany has been in decline and didn't have a great tournament at the Euros.
