Public restroom-be very aware of your surroundings

No worries, Tippy, I will answer my own question. ;)

Pea: Like what?

Let’s see.
We’ve had five pages of discussion about bathroom design which started on page 1 of the thread.
How modern US bathrooms are evolving into gender neutral bathrooms.
How bathrooms in Europe and “the rest of the world” make more sense than ours.
Americans were called “prude”. (What would happen here if we slung similar insults about Europeans, or Canadians?)
Excuses for why it would be ok for a man to peer over a stall while a woman was in the act of eliminating.
How it’s “controlling” for a husband to wait outside a bathroom for his wife.
How It’s “sad” that a nearly-elderly, frail, or anxious older woman with a history of ? assault would have concerns about going into a public bathroom in a casino alone. (My what a compassionate bunch we are!)
I research and post WHY our bathrooms were designed the way they were. Made sense to me.

I’m not sure at what point it “morphed into something strange on a few different levels”?
Why page 5, and not, say, page 3?
Just curious.
I’m the one who said controlling.

I don’t know this person from Adam. However I do have a friend with a controlling husband which is why my mind went there.

These kind of relationships could have developed either way -

- like OP they are anxious or had a bad experience and WANT their spouse to be right by them
- or they do not but don’t have a choice

I don’t know OP or what her situation is. She has since elaborated.
But yes while I did find it odd that husband needs to escort OP everywhere as it’s such a huge difference from my own experience - I do understand and sympathize that OP needs that security. It’s very unfortunate that this happened and heightened her sense of unease.

An American is the one who said it in the first place. And, at least in my case and experience, it is 100% true. I now know I need to pay close attention to hotel room bathrooms in photos when going to Europe because there are a lot of places that only have glass (sometimes frosted, sometimes not) between room and bathroom. I travel with my sister and we have no interest in seeing each other naked.

Okay now this thread has morphed into something strange on a few different levels.
I was waiting until this turned into a discussion about how in Europe, you have to pay to use public bathrooms unlike in the US since the convo was morphing into a Europe vs. US bathrooms discussion.

I do think it's really weird that the OP is getting some pushback about this tbh. I would assume a man looking over a bathroom stall into mine would be up to no good as well.

Yes! I ran into something similar when sharing a room with my sister and cousin in Madrid! Thankfully we couldn't see anything from the beds, but nobody could use the sink or desk while someone was using the toilet or shower.
I saw a bunch similar while looking for a hotel when going to Munich with my parents, too. I do NOT need to see my parents naked, thanks.

Yes, I know mousefan is an American who has been living in Europe for a long time. It really doesn’t matter who said it, it’s rude, and I don’t think it would be tolerated if it was said about certain others.

Thanks for the heads-up about bathrooms in Europe, I’ll keep it in mind when visiting in the future.

I take care of people from all over the world, and have for four decades. People are people. In my experience, most want to have privacy when relieving themselves.

Thanks for posting. I have to wonder if this has something to do with children, or elderly, etc., for safety?
It gives both options - open or closed. I suppose a door would do the same thing. Maybe it’s a light issue. Who knows

The place we're staying at in Mexico in a couple of months is like that. It's at least much more open than people expected so I've seen a lot of comments like "hard to share with family" "not good for friend or sibling trips", etc. My in-laws even mentioned to my sister-in-law who is coming about potentially sharing the room with them but I said unless they were comfortable with the bathroom being completely open I wouldn't suggest it.

There is no separation for instance to change your clothes. You'd have the toilet room or in the shower. The company is a Spanish company and the hotel is def. an 80/90s influence with the colors (black, pink, purple) along with it being an European influence and the coffee bar (it's an all-inclusive) isn't open til like 10am which is something many Americans complain about since we're used to early morning coffee options. Our room category for instance has a bidet inside the toilet room along with a traditional toilet. Looks like the door is a solid door that also opens out to the room but the shower has frost glass and the door just opens to the room so no actual shower room itself. The sinks are out in the open and if you want to take a bath it's also out in the open.

Not too different from the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. But it is trying to be quirky and sexy.

What options? The curtain is on the BATHROOM side of the tub/shower. The glass is along two walls of the tub/shower.

We had the same set up bathroom in Barcelona only the glass wasn’t frosted 🤪🤪🤪it just so happened too that the shower curtain didn’t go around thevwhole tub. Just when DH was taking a shower the maintenance guy came up
fix the tv. Gee I never DH move so fast🤪. Also we were on a cruise and took the tour to Paris. We stopped at a very nice rest station only thing there was no seat on the toilet. I used a lot of toilet paper to cover the bowl🤪interesting traveling to other countries

Yes, I see that. Could a parent not go in and open it so they can let the kids take a bath while watching for safety from the bedroom? Or watching an elderly parent so when they’re ready to get out of the tub (or off the toilet) someone can go in to help? Without standing in the actual bathroom? Not sure what your point is. Why is the curtain there?

One of my closest friends traveled to Turkey and they had to relieve themselves in a hole in the floor.

I don't think you're getting it. Whether the curtain is open or not, you can see whoever is taking a bath/shower from the safety of the bedroom. The curtain is probably there to keep water from splashing out into the bathroom... like you'd have in a hotel or your home.
